Heightened cortical sensory processing triggers fear without conscious awareness. It's helpful that researchers are documenting the scientific basis for the what parents and SPD professionals have so often observed. Flight or fight reactions are triggered in young children - and their situation is more anxiety provoking because they don't know where the changes in their feelings and fear are coming from.
