SEO and Online Marketing Interview with Asif Anwar

SEO and Online Marketing Interview with Asif Anwar | Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | Scoop.it
Internet Marketing interview with Asif Anwar where he talks about Search, Social, Content and Digital Marketing. Checkout the insightful answers!
Asif Anwar's insight:

Quoting:

SEO is an industry where people come for limited time and leave off saying: SEO is dead. It happens all the time, when Google comes up with new algorithm update or patches. That’s why you find fewer professionals with years of experience in SEO.

I have always been futuristic in my strategies, which made me stick onto the profession. But, as the online media evolved, I found that SEO alone could not meet the lead generation demand of a company. But, in most cases, clients prefer full digital solution for their business. So, I started learning and practicing PPC (Pay per Click) and SMM (Social Media Marketing). Therefore, it was really not a switch, it was a value addition to my existing skill sets. In future, I am not willing to leave the industry, rather want to add more values.

For long time I have been preaching clients and others fellow professionals in not using duplicate contents for link building. Still today, many professionals think that building links with the same content will help then rank better. In fact, it might, but to get best result, you always have to go for unique contents. So your link building campaign should also include developing unique contents. So, in my opinion, Link Building as a strategy will die soon. But, by content marketing, i.e. by combining content development and link building, a site can get better results.

Another mistake many businesses and SEO professionals adopt is not leveraging the community and lead the community with content marketing. Community in social media plays a great role in finding various problems and solutions, which can help you to grow your business intelligence. Moreover, listening to social media is also a great way of generating ideas for content marketing.

Taking the big companies as idol is really the worst thing to do. With big companies, you just see only the tip of the ice berg. But, you don’t see what they have gone through to reach there. But, if you are a small company, you also need to go through the same hurdles.  Sometimes, bigger companies suck on smaller things and also have some weaknesses. Focusing on those weaknesses and excelling on them can gradually help smaller companies to grow.

If we take the example if keywords research data, we see that keywords that have high search volume are always told to target. Some say low competition keywords are also good to target. But, high volume keywords also mean they are hard to gain ranks and also low competitive keywords are not worth targeting. However, there are always some low hanging keywords smaller companies can try to excel on. By starting with them, they can start their journey and go onto more and more keywords to gain authority for the keyword.

I think we should stop using the word “Link Building” and replace it with “Content Marketing”. Since just building link is not enough to gain good positions in search engines, let alone authority. You need contents and also disseminate them in various relevant sites.

With the Panda update “Topical” Authority is already the big thing for SEO. If you want to build authority, you need stay focused on your topic. And big part of it is content. Content did in the past and will rule SEO in future. Since, you cannot be an expert in all subjects, you might see many specialized SEO agencies growing up (in fact it already did), e.g. Legal SEO, Automotive SEO, Real Estate SEO, and many more.

We are also seeing early evolutionary shift of Semantic SEO. Whether or not LSI exists, Google and/or other search engines are steadily evolving to understand the relationship between keywords. So, if a page talking about Obama, it will also pass link juice for White House. In future, I hope to see more artificial intelligence in work.

User intent is something that I think Google will improve on. Bayesian Filter is used for spam emails to understand which stuffs are good and which are spam from the behavior of the user. Definition of spam is also unique from person to person. Ladies fashion may be spam to males and major league games to females. And in very recent future we might see something similar to Bayesian Filter in place that understands the user intent. So, when 2 people are searching the same keyword, e.g. Notepad, one will see the Stationary Notepad and the other will see Electronic Notepads.

Search quality highlights: 40 changes for February - Inside Search

Search quality highlights: 40 changes for February - Inside Search | Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | Scoop.it

40 New February 2007 Update by Google:

There have been some tweaks, local search update, safesearch update, news deserves freshness update, and a lot more.

There was also a Panda Update (people calling it Google Panda 3.3)  and most important "Link Evaluation" update, of which Google did not give further clarification :-(

Here is what Google is saying:

We often use characteristics of links to help us figure out the topic of a linked page. We have changed the way in which we evaluate links; in particular, we are turning off a method of link analysis that we used for several years. We often rearchitect or turn off parts of our scoring in order to keep our system maintainable, clean and understandable.

When Search Engine Land communicated with Google, they informed that it is all they have to say to public.

SEO Wars: Forget Black Hat, White Hat - What Color Is Your Lightsaber?

SEO Wars: Forget Black Hat, White Hat - What Color Is Your Lightsaber? | Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | Scoop.it
A long time ago at a search marketing conference far, far away... Well, actually, a few weeks ago at the SES San Francisco Conference, folks attended the "Black Hat, White Hat" event. Upon entering, SEOs had to choose between a black or white cowboy hat, and, interestingly, many were conflicted. For some it was just a fashion thing, but for others choosing a color seemed to present a real conflict. Since a definitive line between black hat and white hat doesn't really exist, many SEOs are left with somewhat of an identity challenge. Fear not, young padawans, a solution for you I may have... PostRank Sunsetting as Separate Service and Google Reader Addon from May 1, 2012

PostRank Sunsetting as Separate Service and Google Reader Addon from May 1, 2012 | Search Engine Optimization (SEO) | Scoop.it

PostRank was undoubtedly the best tool for see the social engagement of feed item in a RSS Feed and evaluate the popularity of a link. The problem is no other tool has grew up to be close to PostRank (Previously "AideRSS").

That is why PostRank has become one of the most used plugin for Google Reader to isolate important stuffs from the noise.

That's why couple of years ago, Google bought them and started to research on their ability to integrate it in their various tools. The major tool that Google thought was not Google Reader, rather it was Google Analytics. Google has integrated PostRank in their Social Metrics Tracking at http://analytics.blogspot.com/2012/03/capturing-value-of-social-media-using.html ;

Google has recently sent this email:

"""""""""""

It is bittersweet news that we remind our users that PostRank will be sunset on May 1, 2012.

The sweet part is that Google Analytics now allows you to conduct much of the same measurement and analytics that you’ve enjoyed through PostRank. We invite you to access the new Social reports within Google Analytics. If you don't already have a Google Analytics account it's free and easy to sign up. Learn more about the new Social reports in our blog post.

As of May 1st, PostRank.com, PostRank Analytics, Top Posts widgets, and Google Reader plugin, will be taken offline.

Regards,
The PostRank team

"""""""""""""

This means that you will not see PostRank as Google Reader plugin any more :-( This means that there will not be any tool in the world that can effectively identify best post from a RSS Feed. Though, I have a question still live in quora about it at http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-Alternatives-for-PostRank-to-Find-the-Importance-of-a-Post-in-a-RSS-Feed ;

But, this also calls for a new product development. RIP, PostRank.

One year ago, Google launched its “Panda Update” designed to filter low quality or “thin” content from its top search results.

Nice infographic about Google Panda Update after a year. Major victims were contents farms along with About.com, Yahoo, and Demand Media. Primarily targeted for English queries, but Panda also went global. And also thought the web that quality content is always the king.

As the web becomes more and more inundated with blogs, videos, tweets, status updates, news, articles, and countless other forms of content, “information overload” is something we all seem to suffer. It is becoming more difficult to weed through all the “stuff” out there and pluck out the best, most share-worthy tidbits of information, especially if your topic is niche. Let’s face it, Google definitely has its shortcomings when it comes to content curation and the more it tries to cater to all audiences, the less useful it becomes.
