Didemnum vexillum has colonized approximately 140 square miles of the pebble and gravel habitat of Georges Bank—a shallow, highly productive, submerged plateau off the coast of New England that supports a number of prized fishing areas.

The spat (juvenile stages) of the Atlantic sea scallop cannot settle on D. vexillum colonies. When D. vexillum attach to scallops, they weigh them down, and make it difficult for them to find food and escape from predators.

When the Fukushima power plant released large quantities of radioactive materials into nearby coastal waters following Japan’s massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami, it raised concerns as to whether eating contaminated seafood might impair human health

On December 8, 2016, NOAA Fisheries announced a comprehensive Seafood Import Monitoring Program to further curb Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing practices and to identify misrepresented seafood imports before they enter the U.S. market.

The U.S. Seafood Import Monitoring Program requires that importers report information and maintain records about the harvest, landing, and chain of custody of imported fish and fish products for certain priority species identified as especially vulnerable to IUU fishing and seafood fraud.

UNH steelheads, hatched at Sumner Brook Fish Farm in Ossipee, thrive in the nutrient-rich waters at the river’s mouth, while the kelp and mussels absorb the nitrogen and particulate matter emitted by the fish as well as other marine entities.

The UNH team typically introduces the steelheads into their pens in the spring, where they grow from a half pound to four pounds by November or December. Once they reach this size they are harvested in an ice bath and delivered to several local fish stores, including Seaport Fish Company in Rye.
