Poetry in Action - The Power of Revision

Poetry in Action - The Power of Revision | Screenwriters | Scoop.it
Annotated manuscripts by Billy Collins, Mary Jo Bang, Marie Howe and more show the vision and revisions of poetry in progress.

Judith van Praag's curator insight, August 3, 1:29 AM
Seeing the annotated manuscripts in this New York Times article triggers a memory of revisions, and what they mean to a poet.

Last year I edited an anthology for a nonagenarian friend. We worked together, with the help of her caregiver, via FaceTime. Part occupational therapy, for my aging friend, as well as for me, part getting together with purpose of a different nature than friendship, the virtual meetings were serious and delightful.

My friend was surprised and pleased with the attention her poems received. I looked at different versions she created over time, and made suggestions for changes or choices. Her caregiver's role became more involved; together the three of us worked until we were on one page.

After the 8.5 x 11 inch proof was read, we discussed the format and size. My friend wanted a small book that people would want to carry with them in their pocket or pocket book.

Using the Picaboo App I created a cute little book, including her original artwork, illustrations made by her caregiver, one of her grandsons and me. I had two copies printed so she could see the real thing, and we could go over details. She loved it.

The son who asked me to take on this project, but had nothing to do with it while we worked on it, expressed dissatisfaction. Not only did he find some mistakes, he didn't want to see the revisions. He wanted to see what he remembered, not proof of a discerning mind.

I don't know why, but I obliged him and changed all the poems to how they were the way he remembered them. When all was said and done, he was happy, but my friend was not. My mistake.

I owe my friend a book the way she envisioned it, the way I showed her how it could be. I owe her that much, and perhaps more,  I owe her poetry in action.
