27 Ways To Promote Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom - Te@chThought

27 Ways To Promote Intrinsic Motivation In The Classroom - Te@chThought | School libraries | Scoop.it

"We’ve talked about the definition of intrinsic motivation in the past. We’ve also talked about some basic ways to improve student motivation.

This time, it’s Mia MacMeekin‘s turn to speak to you about the same, but through gridded, blocked, and easy to read infographics. The graphic starts with a definition for both intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, then offers 27 verbs that can help promote that magic stuff that is characterized by curiosity, effort, engagement, and academic success.

Some were a little iffy–”praise” and “milestones” seemed a little closer to extrinsic motivation. But the vast majority are useful to consider as you design units, lessons, and activities this school year."

11 ways to stay SAFE online when you’re traveling

11 ways to stay SAFE online when you’re traveling | School libraries | Scoop.it

If you bring your phone, tablet or laptop with you when you travel, there’s one thing to keep in mind: public WiFi networks are public.

“That open Wi-Fi connection opens the door for hackers,” writes NPR’s Steve Henn. “They can get in the middle of transactions between, say, you and your bank.”

Because you’re sharing the network with strangers, there’s the risk that someone is using readily available software that snoops on what you’re doing.

The 6-Step Guide To Becoming A Better Learner - Edudemic

The 6-Step Guide To Becoming A Better Learner - Edudemic | School libraries | Scoop.it

"“Education is what people do to you and learning is what you do for yourself,” said Joi Ito in his TED2014 talk. “You’re not going to be on top of mountain all by yourself with a #2 pencil … What we need to learn is how to learn.”

Indeed, traditional education may not be for everyone, but learning is. Learning is about enriching our minds, honing our skills, and changing the way we see ourselves and the world. It improves our behavior and the way we think by expanding and challenging our understanding. All too often I met students who were waiting for learning to happen, waiting for the right teacher to teach in the right way. But waiting can easily be disguised as productive—it isn’t. There are practices you can engage in right now that puts you on the path of self-education."

A Wonderful Poster on Failure ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A Wonderful Poster on Failure ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | School libraries | Scoop.it

"I have always believed that teachers (and people in general) MUST have an open midset; one that tolerates and celebrates mistakes and errors; one that looks at failure as an opportunity for a better beginning. It is through falling down that we stand up robust and it is through misfortunes that we gather our strength to live the life we want and pursue our dreams.

If we want to raise up socially and  emotionally strong students who can face up and overcome  the hardships of life, an important key in this is to teach (and model) them about failure. We need to show them that failure is a healthy sign and a good omen for a healthy life experience. They need to view failure as an attempt for deep reflection and meditation about what work or did not work. They also need to be reminded that failure has been a common denominator behind most of the historical achievements and invention in the history of humankind."

Once you find emails in your inbox from students excited about the upcoming week of school regarding the projects they'll be working on, you know you've successfully hooked them on learning. I tried to implement twitter in the classroom last year but I found it a little daunting to try. The way this school set up the project was getting staff on board by joining Twitter and activetly tweeting. Typing letters to the principal and sending through social media mediums like Twitter, is an effective way of spotlighting student work. The teacher even had kids doing extra work because they enjoyed creating for the classroom. They developed QR codes to link to specific classroom sites such as frequently used gaming applications and websites. Great idea! I now know it's possible for third graders to effectively use social media in the classroom!
