Why massive open online courses (still) matter

“2013 was a year of hype for MOOCs (massive open online courses). Great big numbers and great big hopes were followed by some disappointing first results. But the head of edX, Anant Agarwal, makes the case that MOOCs still matter -- as a way to share high-level learning widely and supplement (but perhaps not replace) traditional classrooms. Agarwal shares his vision of blended learning, where teachers create the ideal learning experience for 21st century students.”

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | IB PYP, MYP & DP Resources | Scoop.it
In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes: - Humility to accept criteria that is not their own. - Courage to defend their own criteria against others. - Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information. - Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information. - Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas. To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

9 Tips Every Teacher should Know about Google Scholar | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

9 Tips Every Teacher should Know about Google Scholar | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | IB PYP, MYP & DP Resources | Scoop.it
Google Scholar is among the best scholarly search engines online yet only a few select of educators know its secrets. As a rule of thumb that applies to all Google products, the effective use of any service from Google s can only be achieved through mastering its deep and hidden features. We have seen in the previous post how filtering a Google search using the keyword " digital literacy " reduced the generated results from 430.000.000 to 90.000.000 which eliminated so much of junk information that could cost you a lot of time going through it. I believe information literacy is a skill that every teacher should master and teach his/her students about. In this regard and to help teachers leverage the potential of Google services in their teaching , Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has recently started out a series of illustrative guides that addresse those particular things that educators need to know in order to better manipulate their " Googling" experience.

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One | IB PYP, MYP & DP Resources | Scoop.it
Excerpt from article written and curated by Master Curator Robin Good and published on MasterNewMedia:"Many such curation tools also appear to be very similar to one another, especially if evaluated exclusively from the type of news streams or visual collections that can be produced with them. The most limiting factor of all, in making an effective selection when it comes to content curation tools is the lack of a proper evaluation framework, identifying the specific requirements and needs that need to be met by the content curation tool to be selected.I am now publicly sharing this list of selection criteria, complemented by relevant questions to be asked when verifying the availability of these features to help both individuals, small organizations and companies evaluate better, and in a more systematic fashion, their ideal content curation toolset. Here the features-list, organized into 21 groups. (*I have marked with HS those features relevant only to hosted content curation services.)1. Import and Export functions2. Content Organization3. Clipping Abilities4. Integrated Search5.
