The Green Fail Infographic | Energy Hack | scatol8® | Scoop.it
Everywhere, companies today receive bonus points for going green. In retrospect, is the going green fever in actuality harming the environment instead?

Take bio-fuels, for example. They are praised for being biodegradable; however, the use and production of these fuels release more CO2 than fossil fuels. The row crops grown to create bio-fuel lead to higher erosion rates than sod crops.

The Internet of Things: Gaining Insight Through Location by Richard Budden   | scatol8® | Scoop.it
"At last week's Internet of Things event in Dubai, a wide range of use cases for IoT were presented and discussed, from manufacturing automation and air space safety, to robotics and power generation. It's clear from these use cases and others that the data generated and captured from IoT sensors embedded into devices and products can serve limitless purposes. However turning this data into useful, actionable information remains a daunting task for many."

The Smart Cities harbor project deployed in the city of Palma measures two basic environmental parameters that most affect citizens’ health: air quality and noise. The project is placing 27 Waspmote Plug & Sense! Smart Environment PRO in various locations around Palma’s harbor, and five Waspmote Plug & Sense! Smart Cities devices.

These devices are set to collect data provided by 81 sensors measuring carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, noise, temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind, and rainfall, among other factors.

Everyone who has been remotely tuned in to recent progress in machine learning has heard of the current 2nd generation artificial neural networks used for machine learning. These are generally fully connected, take in continuous values, and output continuous values. Although they have allowed us to make breakthrough progress in many fields, they are biologically inn-accurate and do not actually mimic the actual mechanisms of our brain’s neurons.

LECCE - Climathon 2017

LECCE - Climathon 2017 | scatol8® | Scoop.it
[EN]THE CHALLENGEWhich innovative, technological and sustainable solutions may be defined for monitoring coastal erosion along the Lecce coastline and plan coast development accordingly? How can Lecce coastal tourism be boosted, taking into account the environmental risks connected to climate change and erosion and protecting the coastal and marine ecosystems?Over the last few years, Lecce city centre has been interested by a strong economic and tourism development. However, its coastal areas along the Adriatic Sea are still suffering and excluded from this economic growth, due to poorly planned and implemented investments. Moreover, climate change and coastal erosion poses additional burden on the coastline, making it vulnerable and subject to environmental risks. Generically defined as the invasion of the sea over land, coastal erosion  can have different shapes and causes, including climatic, hydrological, ecological and mostly human factors. As such, while Lecce coastline represents a key element for the environment and the activities of the city, coastal erosion is a phenomenon with consequences not only related to environmental protection, but also to economic and safety issues. Therefore, new approaches are needed to support a more synergic and durable, physical and economic development of the coastline. The better scientific knowledge on the coastal erosion, and the identification of its causes should be linked with the capacity to alert on extreme events and to plan for the future in an holistic mannerTHE EVENTClimathon Lecce will start on October 27 and will end 24h later, on October 28, with the awards ceremony of the winning group. The event will take place in Lecce, at Officine Cantelmo premises. The live streaming of the event Climathon Lecce (only morning plenary sessions) will be available on www.cmcc.it Climathon Lecce is an event organised by the CMCC Foundation in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecce, Conversazioni sul futuro and START, a project funded by the Apulia Region in the framework of the Programme “Aiuti a Sostegno Cluster Tecnologici Regionali”. The Programme aims at improving knowledge of the coastal environment while integrating real-time observation and operational modelling systems. The winning group will have the opportunit:- to visit Fondazione Renzo Piano premises in Genoa and to participate in the 2017 edition of “I dialoghi” with Renzo Piano, a conversation about art and building.- to present the idea in the context of ECOMONDO the 9th of October (Rimini), a leader exhibition in circular economy in the Mediterrenan area.Local panelProf. Angelo Corallo - Università del SalentoIng.
