Gogo Hits Milestone with New High-Throughput SES Satellite

In-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo announced that it has placed over 200 aircraft into service with 2Ku inflight connectivity technology utilizing the increased capacity of SES Networks’ new SES 15 satellite.
SES 15 is SES’ first hybrid satellite and Ku-band wide beam and Ku-band High Throughput Satellite or HTS capability, with connectivity to gateways in the Ka-band.
The satellite provides service over North America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Panasonic Avionics Exec on the Company’s Major Network Upgrade

Panasonic Avionics completed a major network upgrade in January that will allow its airline customers to take better advantage of its sprawling High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capacity. The upgrade will increase the data rates available to airplanes by at least 20 times, according to the company’s senior director of global capacity planning Todd Hill.

UAE Successfully Trials 50mpbs Connectivity for IFC

Yahsat, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based satellite operator, announced the successful trial of a 50Mbps in-flight connection. The result of a partnership between Yahsat, du, Etihad Airways Engineering, Hughes Network Systems and Carlisle Interconnect, the high-speed broadband offering will be available for airlines to offer its passengers within the next year.

Free In-Flight Connectivity Remains a Long-Term Goal for Airlines

American Moves Ahead with High-Speed Satellite Wi-Fi Deployment, Will Start Charging for ViaSat Service in March

American Airlines provided an update on the progress of its satellite Wi-Fi retrofit program.
The airline said that all of its A320 aircraft and legacy US Airways A319s will have been retrofitted with Gogo’s 2Ku system by the end of 2018. Legacy American A319s and A321s will receive ViaSat’s satellite service by January 2019 and November 2018 respectively, and the entire 737 fleet is expected to have the ViaSat system installed ...

ViaSat has not been subtle in its threats of legal action over Inmarsat’s European Aviation Network (EAN). In a statement, ViaSat Chief Operating Officer (COO) Rick Baldridge accused Inmarsat of abusing its initial Ofcom grant of the 2GHz spectrum by using it for an Air-to-Ground (ATG) network rather than a mobile satellite system.

Thales Alenia Space to Build an Inmarsat VHTS Global Xpress Satellite

Thales Alenia Space has signed a contract with Inmarsat to construct that firm's new communication Global Xpress (GX) satellite.The value of the contract to construct the satellite will be approximately $130 million over the three years 2017 to 2019. The satellite, which is targeted for launch in 2019, will be a Very High Throughput Satellite (VHTS), providing capacity across the Middle East, Europe and the Indian subcontinent.
