Webinar 1/22 (10:30am-Noon): Addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences in Schools: Trauma-Sensitive Strategies | Community Connections: Events and Resources to Support Youth Development | Scoop.it

Description from Webinar Registration Page:
"Have you had a student who seems depressed and can't focus on schoolwork? Have you wondered how you can help students who have seen or experienced traumatic events, like domestic violence, a shooting, or the loss of a parent or sibling? Are you interested to learn how trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect school climates and students' ability to learn? Do you want to know how trauma-sensitive strategies can help address all students’ social and emotional health needs?

Join Dr. Joyce Dorado, Co-founder and Director of UCSF HEARTS, Jane Stevens, Founder and Editor of the ACEs Too High Network, and Sarah Omojola, Statewide Education Advocate at Public Counsel, on January 22, 2013, 10:30am-12pm for the sixth, free webinar in the Let’s Fix School Discipline Webinar Series.

Addressing ACEs in Schools: Trauma-Sensitive Strategies will focus on how complex trauma in childhood affects student learning, student behavior and schools; how trauma-sensitive strategies can be used to improve school climate and how trauma-sensitive schools are effectively addressing students’ social and emotional needs while decreasing disciplinary referrals, violent incidents, and chronic absences."

"A FREE PRE-FATHERS DAY COMMUNITY EVENT!
With Dr. Khalid White, Educator, Author, Filmmaker
We will explore the realities of fathers and families in the Bay Area. The men and women in this film are reshaping the media stereotypes and images of Black families by sharing their personal experiences, the trials & the tribulations, of parenthood.

Khalid White has been a professional educator in the Bay Area for 15 years. He has been San Jose City College’s Professor of Ethnic Studies/African American Studies for roughly a decade.

Khalid’s recent book and documentary, Black Fatherhood: Trials & Tribulations, Testimony & Triumph, has touched multiple communities, states, and countries, providing a counter-narrative to mainstream media’s depiction of African American fathers and families.

Autographed Black Fatherhood Books and copies of the Black Fatherhood DVD will available to purchase.  Join us for the opportunity to experience this award-winning documentary and panel discussion.

A light lunch will be served, donations welcomed.
We hope you can make it!

Happy Fathers Day,

Raising Early Awareness and Creating Hope Program (REACH) // Momentum for Mental Health | Community Connections: Events and Resources to Support Youth Development | Scoop.it

"Seeking to prevent the early onset of mental illness in the youth population of Santa Clara County through early education and awareness, consistent treatment and community involvement, the Raising Early Awareness and Creating Hope (REACH) Program launched its services in an effort to help address this growing mental health issue.

The program, based on the early detection models from the Portland Identification and Early Referral (PIER) Training Institute in Portland, Maine, is a collaboration of efforts between Momentum for Mental Health and Starlight Community Services.  The core mission of REACH is to help detect early warning signs of psychosis that may pose a threat to young adults, and to provide effective support and treatment.  Though often subtle, early symptoms of psychosis can be disabling and affect young people’s ability to complete schoolwork, interact socially, and accomplish daily tasks."...
