Diversity at Stanford

Diversity at Stanford | Sanford University, Stanford, California, USA. Exchange Students | Scoop.it

Overview

Stanford’s undergraduates come from all 50 states and more than 60 nations, but diversity at Stanford means more than geographic, racial, or ethnic differences. The Stanford community embraces a broad range of socioeconomic, religious, cultural, and educational backgrounds. We believe that the best education can develop only in a vibrant, diverse community that actively affirms both the differences among its members and the numerous points of connection. Consider the following:

More than half of Stanford undergraduates are students of color.Black Enterprise Magazine ranks Stanford among the top 5 non HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) in America. The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reports that Stanford ranks among the top 5 U.S. research universities with the highest African-American student graduation rates.Hispanic Magazine ranks Stanford among the top 10 colleges in America for Latina/o students.Stanford enrolls one of the largest percentages of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students in the U.S.

Stanford understands that holistic student development happens with support and access both inside and outside the realm of academics. The diversity on Stanford’s campus can be felt through our classes, student organizations, residential life, and eight individual community centers. These different venues not only serve as a general resource for the campus community, but more importantly, serve the critical purpose of empowering students to strive to reach their full potential. The community centers include:

Asian American Activities CenterBechtel International CenterBlack Community Services CenterOffice of Accessible EducationEl Centro ChicanoNative American (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Program) Cultural CenterWomen’s CenterLesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered (LGBT) Community Resource Center

From our vibrant residential environment, to our intellectually charged classrooms, to all corners of campus where our students engage, diversity is celebrated. Students are encouraged to take risks, to think creatively, to ask questions of each other, and to counter ignorance with scholarship.

The Stanford community values a wide range of opinions, cultures, communities, perspectives, and experiences, all of which challenge a student’s own beliefs, intellectual passions, opinions, and understanding of the world. Our diverse setting at Stanford enables students to investigate and engage in current issues and deeper societal questions. As a result, Stanford students discover how they can positively impact the world around them. We are proud to welcome you to explore our campus.

The Stanford University Drama Department, the Stanford LGBT Center, and Stanford Law School present a staged reading of Dustin Lance Black’s “8,” a documentary play taken from the testimony of the Federal Prop 8 trial, Perry v. Brown.

The performance is part of a nation-wide series of readings of the text. The US Supreme Court banned pubic broadcast of the trial, and the play brings to the public the impassioned arguments made on both sides of this landmark case.

Please stay for a post-show roundtable as artists, lawyers, and scholars discuss the issues raised in the performance.

MEN`S VOLLEY BALL

MEN`S VOLLEY BALL | Sanford University, Stanford, California, USA. Exchange Students | Scoop.it

March 2, 2012

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men’s volleyball team has fallen out of No. 1, but the Cardinal is not through with high-ranked matchups. On Saturday, No. 2 Stanford takes on No. 3 UC Irvine in a match with strong postseason implications. This comes a night after the Cardinal plays host to upset-minded UC San Diego. Both are at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford and UCI are battling for favorable seeding in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament and for an edge at a possible NCAA at-large berth. Therefore, the result could prove vital two months from today. If Stanford, which beat UCI in three on Feb. 18, wins one set from the Anteaters, the Cardinal wins the tiebreaking edge between the two for MPSF tournament seeding purposes.

This Week:
Friday, 7 p.m.: UC San Diego (3-13, 1-10) at No. 2 Stanford (12-3, 9-2), at Maples Pavilion
Click here for live stats. Click here for a premium live All-Access Webcast. Click here for KZSU-2's online radio broadcast.

Saturday, 7 p.m.: No. 3 UC Irvine (12-3, 8-3) at Stanford, at Maples Pavilion
Click here for live stats. Click here for a premium live All-Access Webcast. Click here for KZSU-2's online radio broadcast.

Next Week:
Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Hawai’i at Stanford, at Burnham Pavilion
Wednesday, 7 p.m.: Hawai’i at Stanford, at Maples Pavilion

Halfway Point: Stanford is 9-2 at the halfway point of the MPSF season. If the Cardinal can maintain that pace, it would finish 18-4 – its’ best conference record since winning the MPSF Pacific Division with a 16-3 mark in 1997. However, the 11-match start is even better than the 1997 national-championship team, which began 8-3, but won its remaining eight conference matches. Stanford’s 2010 national championship team was 7-4 at the halfway point and finished first in the MPSF at 16-6.
