Police plan to seize home of convicted terrorism recruiter

Police plan to seize home of convicted terrorism recruiter | Sample | Scoop.it

The family of a jailed terrorist recruiter face losing their home as police, for the first time, plan to seize a property involved in terrorism.

Former Taliban fighter Munir Farooqi was handed four life sentences in 2011 for trying to radicalise young British men and send them to kill troops in Afghanistan.

He lost an appeal against his conviction on Monday paving the way for police to seize his £200,000 home, which he used as his “recruitment centre”.

Greater Manchester Police intend to recover the asset under a power that allows homes and other properties to be seized if they were part of a terrorism offence.

It will be the first time the power has been used since it came in to force in 2009.

A senior police officer insisted the move was not aimed at punishing Farooqi’s family members and they would not be made homeless because they have two other properties.

Farooqi, a Pakistani-born British citizen, was at the centre of a plot to radicalise and persuade vulnerable young men to "fight, kill and die" in a jihad in Afghanistan.

He had previously been inspired to head to Afghanistan by the allied invasion which followed the 9/11 terror attacks. He joined the Taliban as an "active terrorist" but was captured and jailed in November 2001.

But by May 2002 he was released by the authorities in Pakistan and headed back to Manchester where he turned the family four-bedroom home into a "production centre" for propaganda, with a collection of 50,000 extremist books, DVDs and CDs.

The father-of-three was captured in a police sting when two undercover anti-terrorism police officers infiltrated his group wearing secret bugging devices.

He was handed four life sentences in 2011 and told he must serve a minimum of nine years after being convicted of preparing for acts of terrorism, three counts of soliciting to murder and one count of dissemination of terrorist publications, following a four month trial.

His appeal against conviction was dismissed today by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, Lord Justice Treacy and Mrs Justice Sharp.

Farooqi, who is in his fifties, ran an Islamic book stall on Longsight market in Manchester to spread the word of Islam, with the help of co-defendants Matthew Newton and Israr Malik.

The appeal judges also rejected conviction challenges by Newton and Malik.

Lord Judge, giving his last Court of Appeal ruling before he retires as Lord Chief Justice, said the trial judge concluded he was a "very dangerous extremist who believed that murder of allied troops was an obligation, which he wholeheartedly incited".

Police will now look to seize the family home in Victoria Terrace, Longsight, Manchester.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood said: “This is unequivocally not about punishing family members, but demonstrating that if a convicted terrorist who was planning to recruit people to kill our soldiers aboard used a property to carry out this sort of criminality that it should be seized and any monies raised use to fund the ongoing fight against terrorism.

"Again I want to be clear this decision is not about Munir Farooqi's family. This family own, outright, two other properties and will not be made homeless.”

Jerod Garland's insight:

I think that we should be able to go in and take the place that terrorist like activites and people took place. If you're worried about losing your home, then you won't partake in such activites. Also, the US isn't completely abandoning the people who didn't do anything because they have other places that they own that are suitable to live in. We should have more "rules" like that just to keep people on their toes when they think about doing something rash.

I think that it is so awful to take all that money from the people trying to rebuild their lives. Expecially for purposes for terrorism. Although it is horrible, I'm glad that it was brought to the light so people can put an end to this and actually give money to the people who need it and also cut down on the terrorist funds.

I think that in some places we have too much security and in other places not enough. I think that places such as malls that are usually population and merchandise heavy should have better security. If people can get in with bombs and guns without even being checked, I think that we need to rethink our strategy for keeping terrorists out of way of civilians.

Jerod Garland's insight:

I vote that we get those missiles back as soon as possible. We have them there for a reason--the country that they are currently placed in are placed there because the people there we misbehaving and causing trouble. I don't think that we were about to use them, but the people from the country might have other thoughts of what to do with them. 400 missiles is a lot of explosives and a lot of moneys worth, and could potentially cost the US a lot of innocent lives if we don't retreive them.

Jerod Garland's insight:

I feel like people aren't realizing what terrorism really is. Sometimes murders are committed and they need to be stopped, and sometimes the US hires somebody to assassinate someone who is causing harm to lots of people. That is a lot different than having people go into a country and kill lots of innocent people just because, like we didn't even do anything to them. The US I feel is completely opposed to terrorism so I find it silly that they would say that we're the main sponser of it.

I think that the US does a fantastic job keeping us safe. From what I saw, they found out the most terrorist-heavy places and or religions compared to other places and they used that information to be on a lookout for certain people or things. Narrowing down the options will make it easier to avoid and prevent terrorist attacks.

Jerod Garland's insight:

Many other countries complain about the US getting into things that aren't our business, but what I've noticed, if we don't intervene, it does  become our problem because of all the ties we have around the world. One place fights another because they think something isn't going their way. But if one place goes down, there is other places that rely on the place that just fell. Then it becomes a butterfly effect and more people are affected than intended.

Somalia has been the go-to criticism example for anarchy and lawlessness in my generation, but with the times our metaphors must also change. I'm interesting in seeing how Somalia gains control after a time of such factionalism.

Nathan Chasse's curator insight, March 25, 2014 1:12 PM

This article describes the stabilizing political situation in Somalia. The country was long without a central government and the instability made Somalia a haven for Islamic extremists and piracy. In 2012, Somalia held successful elections and the new government, located in the Puntland region, has been taking territory from Al Shabaab and reducing piracy. The increasing stability could improve Somalia's economy as interest in its oil could see significant foreign investment into the former "failed state."

Bob Beaven's curator insight, March 26, 2015 2:58 PM

Somalia, or as we referred to it last class "a country that is not really a country".  Somalia is famous for being a fractured, failing state.  The American war film, "Black Hawk Down" is set in Mogadishu and shows the country even in the 1990s fracturing apart under the influence of various warlords.  The movie was based on an actual event that occurred in the early nineties, in which the US tried to oust a large scale crime boss, supposedly to stabilize the nation, however this plan failed, as the nation continued to be fractured.  This article claims that there is progress being made in the country (Circa 2013) as the pro-"government" forces and a coalition for African security pushed back a terrorist group out of the capital and back to their stronghold in the country.  During 2012, the terrorist group lost its last stronghold.  However, Somalia still has a great deal of challenges facing it.  Al Shabbab is not fully eliminated, just weakened.  The pirates still exist on the Somalia coast, and trying to recreate a country out of something that hasn't existed as one for decades will be difficult.  However, I am pulling for the nation to succeed, the people in the region need stability.

The Clintons Employ Muslim Brotherhood Officials? You Can't Be Serious

The Clintons Employ Muslim Brotherhood Officials? You Can't Be Serious | Sample | Scoop.it

I don’t know who is more shocked about this, me or Huma Abedin, but it turns out that a former top Clinton Foundation official is also … a senior Muslim Brotherhood official who has just been arrested for – you’ll never guess – inciting violence in Egypt. Not to worry, I’m sure it was only moderate violence.

The Washington Free Beacon’s Adam Kredo reportson Gehad [as in Jihad] el-Haddad:

A senior Muslim Brotherhood official who, until recently, had been employed by the William J. Clinton Foundation was arrested in Cairo on Tuesday and charged with inciting violence.

Gehad el-Haddad served as one of the Muslim Brotherhood’s top communications officials until Egyptian security forces seized him as part of a wider crackdown on officials loyal to ousted former President Mohamed Morsi.

Before emerging as a top Brotherhood official and adviser to Morsi, el-Haddad served for five years as a top official at the Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit group founded by former President Bill Clinton.

El-Haddad gained a reputation for pushing the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamist agenda in the foreign press, where he was often quoted defending the Brotherhood’s crackdown on civil liberties in Egypt.

He was raised in a family of prominent Brotherhood supporters and became the public face of the Islamist organization soon after leaving his post at the Clinton Foundation. However, much of his official work with the Brotherhood took place while he was still claiming to be employed by the Clinton Foundation.

Funny how that works. As I’ve previously recounted, Ms. Abedin began working for then-First Lady Hillary Clinton while simultaneously (a) working at an Islamist journal with top al Qaeda financier Abdullah Omar Naseef (the funding device, a “charity” called the Rabita Trust, which Naseef ran with al Qaeda founder Wael Jalaidan, is a designated terrorist organization under U.S. law); and (b) serving on the executive board of the Muslim Students Association’s George Washington University chapter. (The Muslim Students Association is the first building block of the Brotherhood’s American infrastructure, and the late, unlamented al Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki – an MSA alum, likeMorsi, Jalaidan and Ms. Abedin – was the “chaplain” at the GWU chapter at the same time he was providing, er, spiritual advice to some of the eventual 9/11 suicide-hijackers).

Adam Kredo’s report goes on to explain that Gehad el-Haddad’s placement in the Morsi inner-circle was a natural because of family ties: el-Haddad’s father was a top foreign policy adviser to Morsi, the Brotherhood leader, America-basher, anti-Semite, and now-ousted Egyptian president.

Small world: Ms. Abedin’s parents (her mother and late father) have also been prominent Brotherhood figures. In fact, besides running the journal founded by Naseef, Ms. Abedin’s mother, Saleha Mahmood Abedin, is reportedly a member of the Muslim Sisterhood … as is Morsi’s wife. Mrs. Abedin also runs a sharia promotion organization called the International Islamic Committee for Woman and Child (IICWC), which is part of another group, the International Islamic Council for Dawa and Relief (IICDR), that has been banned in Israel for providing material support to Hamas (the Brotherhood’s Palestinian terrorist branch). Both IICWC and IICDR operate under the umbrella of Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi’s Union of Good. Sheikh Qaradawi is the Brotherhood’s chief jurist and has issued fatwas endorsing suicide bombings in Israel and the killing of American troops in Iraq – and his Union of Good is a designated terrorist organization under U.S. law.

Jerod Garland's insight:

Many people are going to freak out about this happening. Nowadays people hear a stereotype about a certain race and thats all the think about when they see one of them. Lots of Muslims and Islams are the same race as the terrorists that we have encountered in the past, but that doesn't mean that every single person of that race is a terrorist. I'm sure the US did some highly professional work to make sure that these two guys were safe and suitable for the job.

Not surprising considering Hillary's aide, Huma Abedin, Weiner's wife...is a member of the Muslim Sisterhood and her family is aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood. They've all sold their souls to the devil.
