The Redmond tech giant Microsoft Corporation recently announced its biggest acquisition to date. It is the takeover of the professional networking portal, LinkedIn for a staggering 26 billion US dollars. Industry pundits are all hard at it with speculations and gossips. Some are already asserting that this is going to be another big mistake by the “windows maker”, like the acquisition of Nokia. As the professional world eagerly waits for the end results of this historic business takeover, slated to be completed by the year end, we would also like to share our thoughts here. 

LinkedIn at a Glance 
It may not be an exaggeration to say that LinkedIn is to the professional community what Facebook is to the average Joe. To put it in different terms, LinkedIn is the social networking medium for the business fraternity. Head quartered in Mountain View, California, LinkedIn Corporation’s current net worth is 7.5 billion USD. As of 2016, the number of LinkedIn members exceeds 433 million. Out of this user base, about 106 million members are believed to be active users. 

Infancy 
LinkedIn was founded in the year 2002 by Reid Hoffman, one of the founding members of PayPal, along with some of his colleagues from there. The site was officially launched to the public a year later on May 2003. By 2008, the company was valuated at $ 1 billion, attracting investment from venture capital titans like Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners. By year 2010, the company was revaluated at $2 billion and attracted another $20 million hedge fund investment from Tiger Global Management LLC. 

IPO 
Having crossed 150 million memberships and 200 million in revenues, LinkedIn made its initial public offering in 2011 at $45 per share. In the very first day, LinkedIn shares witnessed a growth of over 170% and sell today at $190, a share. The revenue LinkedIn generated that year from advertising alone was to the tune of $155 million. Microsoft’s offer of 26 billion may be calculated to approximately $196 per share. Last year, LinkedIn recorded a revenue of almost 3 billion USD. 

What it Means to Microsoft 
In our opinion, this deal could work wonders for Microsoft. First of all, the service offered by LinkedIn is one-of-a-kind. There are no serious contenders in business networking or no other platform connects business professionals like LinkedIn does. Moreover, Microsoft already connects to millions of business users through their office 360O suite. With LinkedIn under their belt, the possibilities seem to be enormous. 

Some experts say that this could even be a defensive move against Facebook. The ever increasing popularity of the social media giant and the alarming dependability today’s youth have on it, can easily translate to many unseen opportunities. By acquiring a networking service that connects to a more mature and business-oriented community, Microsoft can stay on in the game. 

If headed in the right path, Microsoft can regain the glory it lost in the battle of smartphones. Though Windows Mobile was introduced way back before Android or iOS, Microsoft failed to foresee the biggest turn on the road ahead; smartphones surpassing desktops and laptops. Had they played along well, Microsoft could have easily been on the forefront of mobile technology.
