U.S. Challenge Now Is to Stop Further Putin Moves, NYT.

The Obama Paradox by ANDREW LEVINE » CounterPunch

The Obama Paradox by ANDREW LEVINE » CounterPunch | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

Barack Obama ran for office promising change; he delivered continuity.  But then, continuity brought change – for the worse.

In 2008, “change” meant whatever voters wanted it to mean.  Like the candidate, the word was a Rorschach inkblot.

Many, probably most, Obama voters had no clear idea what kind of change they expected.  All they knew was that, under George W. Bush, the country had veered dramatically off course.  They thought Obama would fix that.

Some voters did have more specific expectations.  Some thought that Obama would wean the country off neoliberalism.  With a financial and economic meltdown raging, the time was ripe.

Some expected him to restore the rule of law at least to pre-9/11 levels; many hoped and expected that Bush era war criminals would be brought to justice.

Others thought that the Democratic Party would become more like what it had been before the Clintons had had their way with it.

The list goes on.

M of A - Popcorn Please While "Putin's Agitators" Rule in Kiev

While anything seems possible, the operating assumption among some American and European officials is that Mr. Putin will not overtly invade eastern Ukraine but instead opt for a murky middle plan, using localagitators and perhaps undercover special forces to stir even more unrest in largely Russian-speaking areas of the country.
U.S. Challenge Now Is to Stop Further Putin Moves, NYT

---

Putin is watching TV. Calls up his Chief of Intelligence: “Give Tyagnibok a medal for banning the use of Russian in Ukraine. What do you mean he isn't one of ours? Ok, give Yarosh a medal for the idea of blowing up Ukrainian gas transit lines. What do you mean, that's his own doing? How about that cretin Lyashko? How about those cretins from Svoboda—Miroshnichenko and others? So, DO WE HAVE ANY AGENTS ON THE GROUND IN UKRAINE AT ALL?! Where the hell are they? What the hell do you mean they bought a dump-truck of pop-corn and a tanker truck beer and are watching it like a movie?!!!” Hangs up in disgust. Calls again: “How could you let Muzychko get killed?”
via Cluborlov

Indeed Putin can just sit back and enjoy the popcorn. The putschists government is doing its very best to disgrace itself, to in-fight with its ideological friends and to push Russian speaking Ukrainians closer to Russia. Just notice today's decision to suspend even more Russian language TV services in Ukraine. How is that supposed to convince Russian speakers in Ukraine that their voices will be heard?

Putin’s approval rating hits 80 percent ~ add 1 + [mine]

Putin’s approval rating hits 80 percent ~ add 1 + [mine] | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how despite (or perhaps due to) the situation in Crimea and Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin was enjoying a three-year high in his approval ratings.

On Wednesday, the independent Levada Center released their latest numbers for Putin, and they show that his popularity is growing even more. Putin now holds an enormous 80-percent approval rating. Just 18 percent of Russians appear unhappy with his leadership, the lowest number in years (the other 2 percent are unsure).

Happy Geopolitical Hour »» PEPE ESCOBAR :: 'US desperate to isolate Russia on all fronts'

Happy Geopolitical Hour »» PEPE ESCOBAR :: 'US desperate to isolate Russia on all fronts' | Saif al Islam | Scoop.it

The Obama administration is taking no prisoners trying to “isolate” Russia on all possible fronts – with negligible results so far.

Here I outlined some reasons why Asia won’t isolate Russia. And here some reasons why the EU cannot afford to isolate Russia. Yet the Obama administration is relentless, and bound to keep attacking on three major fronts – the G20, Iran and Syria.

First, the G20. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop threw a balloon, speculating that Russia and President Vladimir Putin could be barred from the G20 summit in Brisbane in November.

The reaction of the other four BRICS member-nations was swift: “The custodianship of the G20 belongs to all member-states equally and no one member-state can unilaterally determine its nature and character.”

US-subservient Australia had to shut up. For now.

The BRICS, not by accident, are the key developing world alliance inside the G20, which actually discusses what matters in international relations. The G7 – which ‘expelled’ Russia from its upcoming meeting in Sochi, transferred to Brussels - is just a self-important talk shop.
