Bones and teeth at ancient Moche burial sites suggest that the victims of human-sacrifice rituals were war captives.

A recent publishing in National Geographic by Dan Vergano described recent finding in Moche, Peru. New analysis of bone and teeth at previously discovered Moche sites reveal that the sacrificed are captive not local to the Moche province. Approximately 70 sacrificial victims have been found. Aside from the victims archaeologist have found that many elite women have their origins in valleys that are not considered Moche territory.

Aztec sacrifices are usually seen as the result of the necessarily gruesome posses of appeasing of the sun and moon gods. But recent analysis of Aztec sacrifices do not seem to support previous notions about sacrifices that are solely to give sustenance to the sun god. A journal article written by Michel Graulich seems to support that sacrifices could also function to absolve moral transgressions.

In the NBC article written by Mark Stevenson, Mark Questions whether or not the Spanish over reported the human sacrifices done by the local Indians. Many believed that early Spanish reports existed in order to denigrate the aborigines. While recent evidence disputes the quantities reported by the Spaniards present, the methods of execution are not.

John Roach writes about how It is believed that the 13 year old girl, referred to as the Ice Maiden, was giving increasingly high doses of alcohol and coca leaf. Many consider these remains among some of the best preserved mummies ever.
