Ensuring financial access to health services is a critical challenge if they are to reach the health Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Rwanda, has championed innovative health care financing policies and this paper from Oxford Journals argues that the country's experience provides a useful example of effective implementation of policies that reduce the financial barrier to health services, hereby contributing to the health MDGs.

Video: Ban Ki-moon says 'we should have done much more' to stop genocide in Rwanda

United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon spoke of his regret that the international community did not do more to stop the genocide in Rwanda at a commemoration event in Kigali. Rwanda's president Paul Kagame emphasised his belief that 'the history and root causes' go beyond Rwanda.

Land has historically been a source of dispute and conflict in Rwanda, compounded by the social unrest which resulted in the 1994 genocide. Three million people became refugees, political institutions were weakened, as was infrastructure. Traditional land allocation systems also suffered. This report from  Evidence on Demand provides a detailed case study on the approach taken to land tenure reform by the DFID-funded Land Tenure Regularisation Programme (LTRSP) in Rwanda.

The anniversary is being marked with an online memorial, using the hashtags #Rwanda20yrs and #Kwibuka20. Kwibuka means "remember" in Kinyarwanda, Rwanda’s language. People have been sharing photos from the remembrance ceremony in the capital Kigali, as well as art and photographs of those lost or injured in 1994.
