Why I’m Thankful For My Roof

There are many things to be thankful for but one of the most important things to be thankful for this holiday season is the roof over my head. We don’t realize how much goes into a roof covering … from the roof ventilation and underlayment to the roofing shingles, I am thankful to Atlas for providing a high-quality roof that lasts. Without a roof over our heads, my family and everyone would become drenched when it rains. Without a roof over our heads, showering in private would be impossible. Without a roof over our heads, the sun would prevent any attempt to sleep in on the weekends. Without a roof over our heads, the raccoons would steal all of my late night snacks. Without a roof over our heads, the relentless neighbors would always be able to get ahold of me. Without a roof over our heads, my girlfriend would make me watch Sex and the City every waking moment of the day. Without a roof over my head, how would the children hear the pitter patter of Santa’s Reindeer? Without a

Easy techniques to hanging Christmas lights

It’s that time of year again when you get to act like Clark Griswold. Go ahead and get the Christmas lights out of the attic, unwind that never-ending knot, and start the process of making your home able to be seen from the International Space Station. But before you get up on your ladder, you should read some tips and hang your lights like a professional with our go-to-guide this season. Safety is the trick to staying atop your roof while hanging decorations. First, be sure to count the number of lights you have and estimate where each strand will fit into place along your home. Notice the shorter lights would look better in a place closer to the ground and the longer lights higher up so you don’t find yourself going up and down the ladder several times. If need be, purchase more lights and save yourself the anticipation hassle of wondering what will work … or what still works from last year’s setup. Cutting the light strands is an option for custom alignment but make sure yo

New Automatic Standby Generators Every Homeowner Should Look Into

Weather conditions are constantly changing and sometimes unpredictable. Our homes need to be prepared to take care of us during unpredicted power outages. The rain and wind can shut the lights off with one gust, knocking the power at the home out of operation. With the new automatic standby generators this will not be an issue. It takes power to run the refrigerator, light the living room, power the air conditioning, and provide wifi. Sometimes it will take hours for the city to repair a power outage or shortage of the electric box in a neighborhood and by then your freezer items have already thawed. Generac is selling a new line of automatic standby home generators that only use the resources the house already holds. When the power goes out, the generator will wait 10 seconds to conclude that the power is completely lost before powering back up.  It will then proceed to run continuously to boost the power back into the house without any action from the homeowner. According to Genera

Answers Behind Larger New Homes In A Recovering Market

One would think new homes would shrink in size with the housing crisis still in a state of recovery. Yet when builders are commissioned to construct a new home the medium size requested is 2,384-square-feet in size. That is up from 1,525-square-feet from 1970. How does this make any sense with increasing environmental concerns along with barely escaping the housing bust? There is already a bountiful selection for homeowners that seek small to medium size homes available for occupation. Many foreclosed homes that were on the market have now been bought for a substantially cheaper price than originally listed. There are also many of these homes still on the market making for an increase request for something that is not up for sale currently … bigger homes. Mortgage qualifications also remain stiff, as banks are more difficult to win over. People with low or poor credit are finding it difficult to obtain a loan while the average income idles for the middle class. Moreover, price for n

New Roof Needed?

How many times do you check your roof? Not enough I’m sure. Life today is so rushed, shuffling the kids in and out of the house, rushing back into the house after work with just enough time to have dinner cooked and ready for the hungry mouths to indulge at the family dinner table. Then on the weekends it’s soccer practice, yard work, or maybe even a personal day for yourself. So when does checking your roof factor in? What do you even look for and how can you tell the problem is so severe the roof needs to be replaced and not fixed? Sure making little fixes throughout the year helps, but after a certain point it just becomes that time for a completely new roof. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommends checking your roof twice a year … start a new habit! Check for places inside your home where your roof might be sagging and dark spots or dark streams. Also look out for any signs of water damage or leaking; this can be easily spotted by seeking out places wh

Prepare Your Home For Winter

Homeowners are aware of the mental preparation needed to handle the winter months, but we also need to make sure our homes are physically ready to take on the cold before temperatures drop. The coldness exploits weaknesses in the home such as heat and energy leaks along with causing potential damage to the home. Here are ways to prepare your home prior to the winter months. What you didn’t know about the fireplace Who doesn’t love to bundle up in front of the fireplace? Before stocking up on all that lumber, think about converting to gas. Traditional woodburning fireplaces draw the heat out of your home, letting it escape through the chimney. The only room that will really be warm is the one with the fireplace. Gas fireplaces have the opposite affect by pulling the heat from outside and pushing it back into the home; look into direct-vent systems to warm the room efficiently. Adjust your fan to turn clockwise Since heat rises, this will force the rising warm air back downwards. Ai

The Housing Market Possibly Making A Comeback

Housing prices are steadily on the rise year after year and home purchases are decreasing. This is directly related to the job market. People without jobs don’t have the money to buy or upgrade homes and insurance companies won’t give out a mortgage if you are already in a rut. Overcoming these negative attributes, the housing market overall continues to recover. As anticipated, the housing economy bounced back in the second quarter. But starting to escape the housing bubble, there are still 648,000 homes in the United States still at a point of foreclosure in June 2014. However, that is still 35% better than June 2013. This would be prime time for our youth looking to buy a home to make a purchase on a foreclosed home. Foreclosed homes are cheaper and more attainable! Buy a home to live in or fix the home up to rent out. Turnover waits usually pay off; the only potential obstacle might be waiting to sell. Choosing the Right Shingle Color

Picking the right shingle color for your new roof can be a tough but exciting choice. The right shingle color will add greatly to your home’s “curb appeal”. Here’s how: Express Your Personality Your shingle color makes a “statement”, whether you intend it to or not. So, why not take the opportunity to express your personal style? Do you like the classic and conservative look? Try more neutral colors that will remain current for years. This is also a safe choice if you plan to sell your home in the near future. Try blacks, browns, grays, or creams. Going for a more edgy look? You could use a combination of less traditional, complimentary colored shingles. Consider Your Climate Different colored roofs behave differently in hot and cold climates. Dark colored roofs absorb heat. This heats up the attic, making the house harder to cool but easier to heat. Such a roof performs very well in colder climates. Light colored roofs reflect the sun, making sure that they perform well i

Spruce Up Your Herb Garden: Grow Mint in Containers

Gardening is a multi purpose activity: it enhances your curb appeal and can provide delicious, fragrant, or useful plants. Mint is a great addition to any garden. It can be used to make tea, make mojitos, flavor iced tea, or to enhance your desserts. However, mint can be a rather invasive plant when left alone in a flower bed. It has crawling roots that will continue to expand the plant until it can’t go any further. That’s why mint is the perfect container herb. Planting your mint in a container You could choose either a decorative pot (choose a larger one), or even a window box (for extra curb appeal). Growing mint from seed is tricky, so either purchase a plant from a reputable nursery, or start your plant from a cutting. If you know someone with a mint plant, cuttings are a great way to go. Just snip off a green piece of the plant, and plant it as you would any other. Your mint will get full and bushy in no time. Keeping your mint healthy Growing mint is relatively easy. To en

Are You Green Or Sustainable?

There are some very specific qualities that differentiate between being green and being sustainable. These two terms are often misconstrued and used interchangeably, when being green and being sustainable are actually quite different concepts. Being Green The classification of being green is actually green living. Green living also incorporates beliefs to balance our lifestyle, which is a spectrum overall. You can only do so much to be green every day. Things you can do to be greener are use green products when cleaning or cooking. Not only will you have a less toxic home when using green cleaners, it is less likely your pets will get toxins on their paws, to then be licked off and ingested for possible illnesses. Organic eats is also supporting the green community as pesticides and other harmful chemicals are taken out of your food, and therefore out of your body. It’s the quality of each individual ingredient the makes for quality of the overall product. Take a mouthwatering cheeseburger for instance. You can have a cheeseburger, yes, but if each element of the burger is specially prepared you will have the ultimate cheeseburger … toast the bread, curb the cheese from scratch, use organic meat and caramelize the onions. Same goes for your home’s protection. You should spend more to get a roof that will last in the long run, rather than taking the cheap and easy route and having to reroof your home right when the warranty expires. Tis’ the season to be thankful, so don’t let the task of cooking the turkey bring you down. Cooking a turkey is super simple, but you have to make sure you plan ahead. Treat your turkey like any other meat, handle with care, so there is no food contamination of any kind. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Let your turkey thaw inside the plastic wrapping and pull out any garbage inside the turkey such as the giblets and neck. Drain the juices and pat your turkey dry with paper towels. Add any marinates or spices to your turkey before placing your bird in the oven. You can even place something delicious inside the turkey (like stuffing), but make sure whatever you stick inside is ok to cook for hours upon end. Architect Bob Berkebile Seeks To Redirect Our Future

Bob Berkebile, co-founder of Kansas City, Mo.-based architecture firm BNIM, took home this year’s Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability. Like most of the greats, a passion towards a particular field or area of interest evolves from repeated pensive thoughts, Berkebile alike. In 1981, a walkway at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City collapsed killing 114 people and injured 216. Berkebile himself helped to recover the bodies, devastated by the tragedy and feeling as though the accident was his fault. He pondered various forces and factions of building development to modify his work for his firm to concentration on sustainability, knowing it would be our future. Berkebile was heavily involved in the founding of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Committee on the Environment, the Living Building Challenge, as well as the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Housing of the Future

When building towards the future it helps to reminisce on the past. Restoration of a historic or old building can be trendy and possibly transform into a modern marvel. Looking into the past helps contractors see what had worked in the past or how to differ a technique to be more beneficial than previous versions. Sustainability and being cost conscious is key towards a better future. Sustainability Being a homeowner comes with a lot of responsibility. When initially designing the perfect home, the contractor should be building with global climate change in mind by using green materials instead of traditional ones. Take bamboo for example. Use bamboo as an alternative to wood flooring, cabinets, and other entities in the home. It takes almost quadruple the amount of time to regrow trees unlike bamboo that will fully mature in only three to five years. Using natural vegetation materials is also easier to clean, being mostly water resistant, and surprisingly durable! Numerous companies

Want To Save Money On Roofing? Keep Up With Maintenance

Replacing a roof is an expensive endeavor, and most homeowners don’t have tens of thousands of dollars sitting around for an avoidable home improvement project. The average asphalt shingled roof should last at least twenty years. If you want to avoid replacing it before its time, there is one simple thing that you should do: keep up with your roof maintenance. Don’t Panic Over Roof Leaks: Fix Them Quickly Often small leaks are no reason to panic. They can be easily patched. If you make sure to have the proper repairs done in a timely manner, small damage won’t be exacerbated and your bill will be significantly diminished. Letting a leak sit, or doing a poor repair job is a good way to ensure a high roofing bill down the road. Keep Everything Clean Debris build-up causes water to pool, prevents drainage, and pushes the moisture into places where it doesn’t belong. Keeping your gutters clean and your roof free from debris is the best way to keep heavy rains from causing damage.
