Rodolfo Michel: Photographer for Flexi Shoes

Rodolfo Michel, photographer for Flexi, creates beautiful ad campaigns.

Rodolfo Michel's insight:

Rodolfo Michel is a fashion photographer for Flexi, a global footwear brand founded in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico in 1935.  Much like the company he works for, Rodolfo Michel has staying power; he is dependable and leaves a remarkable impression wherever he goes.  Rodolfo Michel has worked his way up through the many years to become the photographer he is today and doesn’t regret a single day.

Rodolfo Michel initially didn’t have dreams of becoming a photographer.  He instead wanted to be a zoologist.  After a couple years of pursuing that endeavor, Rodolfo Michel knew it wasn’t for him.  With an artist’s heart and way of looking at life, Rodolfo Michel turned his attention to photography, becoming an assistant to a fashion photographer.  It was there that Rodolfo Michel learned the old-school way of photography, spending countless hours in a darkroom.  He devoted his time and efforts to printing, perfecting, and experimenting with photography while developing his own view of the world.

Through his own artistic exploration, Rodolfo Michel discovered a love for sculpture and architecture.  He believes that, “when a person is a true artist, they have a deep appreciation for all artistic fields.”  Some of Rodolfo Michel’s favorite pieces are his photographic emulsions, where he has the opportunity to experiment with exposure and images.  Rodolfo Michel recently created a series of bronze sculptures, including chess pieces with a leather bound chessboard.  Likewise, Rodolfo Michel continues to work on photographic portraits for individual clients and has compiled photographs of various cities for postcards.

Flexi hired Rodolfo Michel for his exquisite taste, his meticulous manner with his work, and his devotion to perfection.  Rodolfo Michel’s excellent taste and ability comes through with every shot.  For Rodolfo Michel, “it’s a job like any other, in that professionalism is one of the most important qualities a person can have.”  To the Flexi ads, Rodolfo Michel brings style and class while maintaining the vision of the company and the wants of the clientele.

Outside of fashion photography, Rodolfo Michel loves to travel while seeing the world through his camera lens.  His job has allowed him to travel all over the world, snapping pictures of the interesting sites the world has to offer.

Rodolfo Michel Declares Quitting Traditional School a Great Personal Decisio

Originally Rodolfo Michel wanted to be a zoologist but found school to be unfit for him. Eventually he pursued photography after quitting school and since then has never been happier.

Rodolfo Michel's insight:

Photography has not always been the obvious choice for Rodolfo Michel. As a child in Guadalajara, he wanted to grow up and pursue a career in the sciences as a Zoologist. Over time, however, Rodolfo Michel realized he was not the best student and felt dispassionate about continuing such traditional education. It was then that he dropped out of school.

In 1993, Rodolfo Michel found his way back to school in Texas and began studying English. It seemed that the sciences were simply not a good fit, and Rodolfo Michel needed creative outlets in order to thrive in life. However, English did not seem to be the outlet he found solace in as he soon ended his studies and returned to Guadalajara. It was back home that Rodolfo Michel first pursued photography at U.A.G. and then continued on to the Texas Art Institute. Once again, traditional studies were not Rodolfo Michel’s match, and he soon quit because he was so unhappy.

“However, to be truly happy you must first be unhappy. I had to unfortunately learn this lesson the hard way,” said Rodolfo Michel. Thus, soon after leaving the Texas Art Institute, Rodolfo Michel began as an apprentice to a fashion photography and finally found his niche. This was what he was meant to do! Rodolfo Michel spent a majority of his time working in the darkroom and developing an understanding of the art of photography.

Since then, Rodolfo Michel has worked hard in the field he loves to earn his own solo exhibits and collaborate with some talented models to build his portfolio. While he does not encourage others to drop out of school, Rodolfo Michel does believe in each individual finding the right path that completes them in this life. Traditional schooling holds that path for some and apprenticeship is the right way for others. The true lesson, according to Rodolfo Michel, can only be learned when you know what you want out of life and pursue it aggressively!

To this day, Rodolfo Michel continues his photography career and encourages others to look at his work on his website www.rodolfomichel.com! Ways to contact him are available on the website if you have any further questions for him!

Rodolfo Michel Declares Commercial Photography His Official Career

After beginning his career as an artistic photographer, Rodolfo Michel finds his niche in commercial photography and pursues it energetically.

Rodolfo Michel's insight:

When first starting out as a photographer’s assistant after an inconsistent relationship with education, Rodolfo Michel found photography to best be utilized as an artistic outlet. However, as the years have gone by he finds his work more fitting in the commercial market. Much of these images have been captured outside and display Rodolfo Michel’s passion for a natural environment in his work. He believes this is the key to successful commercial photography because while it does advertise trends it also incorporates the natural world, something most people are not in-touch with enough in today’s world.

Rodolfo Michel has had his work used by the popular television network Vh1, the famous production company Paramount Studios, Flexi Shoes, and even by the educational Animal Revolution organization that strives for animal rights. Some of the images can be seen on Rodolfo Michel’s website: www.rodolfomichel.com.

Commercial photography seems to be a better fit for Rodolfo Michel because it reaches so many viewers on a level that is relatable to their everyday lives. The locations are places the viewer may have been, the outfits are clothes the viewer may have worn, the products may be the viewer’s favorite shoe company. There is a closeness between Rodolfo Michel as the photographer and the public as the viewer that may not be established through artistic photography.

“I know some may say artistic photography speaks to the soul of the audience and I do agree,” states Rodolfo Michel. “However, I think commercial photography speaks to the human in the audience because it is universal products in a market everyone is aware of.”

Rodolfo Michel’s knowledge in commercial photography has also proven useful in his job working for a well-known shoe company in Mexico. This job takes him to other countries to work on ad-campaigns and allows Rodolfo Michel to collaborate with a variety of established artists and models. He enjoys these trips because it breaks up routine and leads him to new places and new people. These business trips help Rodolfo Michel financially and professionally but they also aid in inspiring his work when he needs new ideas.

Rodolfo Michel Announces First Solo Exhibits

Throughout his career Rodolfo Michel has studied under many established fashion designers. Finally he has earned the right to his own exhibits.

Rodolfo Michel's insight:

Beginning his career in Guadalajara, Rodolfo Michel eventually made his way to Texas to pursue photography. It was during his time in Texas that he studied under a Fashion Photographer and fell in love with the practice of taking art in the form of clothing and transferring it to art through his camera lens. Rodolfo Michel dedicated himself to thousands of hours in the darkroom discovering the behind the scenes work that goes into making a picture the best it can be.

“I live by a simple motto when it comes to my work. ‘Printing. Perfecting. Experimenting.’ I find it important to know the basics of your craft first and then making it your own, and making it the best version of your own at that! And then of course, just as life is unpredictable, you plan your work to grow and evolve in the unpredictable manner that all things thrive by,” said Rodolfo Michel.

This mentality has certainly proven successful to his career and has since opened doors leading to the exciting new journey of his first exhibits! Rodolfo Michel’s shows can be seen at the well-known Fotofest, the international non-profit organization for arts and education, as well as ArtHouston, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (U.N.A.M.) These shows have validated Rodolfo Michel’s belief in his work that all his time has been for something substantial. He is planning to move to Los Angeles next and is excited for the possibilities that will arise from this choice. If he has learned anything in his travels, it is that good things come from being proactive!

Rodolfo Michel describes the feeling of displaying your work in its own show as “awe-inspiring.” As one can imagine, there is no better feeling than working hard for something you care passionately for and watching others find the same appreciation for it that you’ve been longing to translate. Art is the best form of translation as it can be heard and understood in every language. In fact, art is said to be a language of it’s own and it seems Rodolfo Michel has learned it fluently.
