Sylvester Stallone Joins Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz in Olivier Assayas’ ‘Idol’s Eye’ | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Idols Eye is back on with Sylvester Stallone taking on the role of Tony Accardo (originally being played by Robert DeNiro).

Shooting is scheduled for February 2017 in Toronto.

While Stallone will be taking the role previously meant for Robert De Niro (of Chicago mob boss Tony Accardo), Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz are still aboard, according to ScreenDaily. Budgeted at around $25 million, the film follows Pattinson’s character as a “petty thief who unknowingly steals a blue diamond from Accardo and sparks a war between the two men as they strive to stay ahead of the FBI.”

Robert Pattinson Interview for 'Studio Ciné Live' Magazine (France)

Robert Pattinson Interview for 'Studio Ciné Live' Magazine (France) | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The several excerpts (translated):

Studio: The list of directors you worked with is really impressive: Werner Herzog, David Cronenberg, James Gray, Harmony Korine for next year. Do you only desire to have a career in independent movies?
Rob: The most passionnating roles are found in independent movies. It is impossible to have a blockbuster giving you a subversive role because it is only made to entertain the large audience. I don’t want to have an artist’s pose, I am not interested in a movie if it is only to act in it. I want roles which make me take risks every time (which endanger me).

Studio: Endangering you in which way?
Rob: I don’t know. I act since eleven years ago and I begin knowing what I like and what I can act or not. Indeed, I am looking for complicated roles. I love the idea of looking into a role without knowing hos to act it. The experience as a scientific sense seduces me. Not the experience as a skill.

Studio: Leonardo Di Caprio’s career, whom you are often compared to, is it an example for you?
Rob: Yes, he had an incredible career… I would love to work with David Michöd once again, who directed me in THE ROVER, as Leo did with Scorsese. The truth is, I don’t really know where I want to go. And I don’t know what I am capable of. I trust the destiny.

Olivier Assayas Talks About Meeting Rob and Financing 'Idol's Eye'

Olivier Assayas Talks About Meeting Rob and Financing 'Idol's Eye' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The veteran French filmmaker shares his thoughts on the nature of celebrity and how greater resources impact his work.

Several excerpts of interview:

Q: Your next movie will co-star Robert Pattinson. Do you feel similarly about him?
A: I met him in London at a very early stage before I shot "Sils Maria" while I was still working on the screenplay for my next film, but I knew I wanted him for the leading role. We had a long conversation in London about the project.

Q: Most of the financing came from ARTE, right? And for the next one?

A: No. It's a different system of financing, American financing. That'll be the first time for me.

Q: How's it going so far?
A: Honestly, I'm a little nervous about it at this stage. You have to deal with business types — movie business types: lawyers, bankers, accountants, all these kinds of other types you just don't want to spend five minutes with. The thing is, I make movies because I can choose the people who I spend time with. I don't have to deal with the bullshit of everyday job stuff. So I don't want to end up making movies with people I'm not interested in. People I'm bored with who don't share my values and so forth. So I'm just trying to structure things in ways that I have to deal the producer of the film and that's it. I don't want to have conversations with anyone else.

Brisbane Times: The Rover puts Robert Pattinson on road to redemption

Brisbane Times: The Rover puts Robert Pattinson on road to redemption | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The vampire is dead. Or at least by now he should be. With The Rover, Robert Pattinson has finally shaken off the Twilight tag that threatened to define him forever as an actor.

He’s aware that he’s getting favourable reviews for The Rover. He’s happy about this, of course, he says, ‘‘because I really love the movie’’. But when it comes to his performance, he admits, ‘‘I always think of it as a work in progress, and it just gets frustrating, thinking about things you could fix.’’

At the same time, when he read the script, it was one of those rare occasions when he connected immediately with a role.‘‘Maybe because it was so loose - you could really do almost anything with the character. You could project anything onto it. But I don’t know, I could hear the voice in my head almost immediately, I could feel a walk ... and that’s only happened to me three or four times since I’ve started acting.’’

Robert De Niro has joined the cast of Idol’s Eye alongside Robert Pattinson. The plot of the next film from director Olivier Assayas is being kept under wraps, but it’s described as a sophisticated heist action-thriller.

Benaroya Pictures has come aboard to produce and finance Idol’s Eye, which is expected to start production in October in Chicago and Toronto. Charles Gillibert developed and produced Idol’s Eye with CG Cinema, Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber, Film 360’s Scott Lambert, Alexandra Milchan and Michael Benaroya. Ben Sachs is executive producing. International Film Trust will be repping foreign sales. CAA, which arranged financing for the film, will represent domestic rights along with WME.

Olivier Assayas Talks The “Painful Horror” Behind The Shut Down Of ‘Idol’s Eye’ With Robert Pattinson & Robert De Niro

Olivier Assayas Talks The “Painful Horror” Behind The Shut Down Of ‘Idol’s Eye’ With Robert Pattinson & Robert De Niro | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

The director was ready to mount his first American-financed film, the crime story “Idol’s Eye” starring Robert Pattinson, Robert De Niro, and Rachel Weisz, when financiers Benaroya Pictures pulled out at the last minute. The reasons that the film shut down at the time were somewhat cryptic, but obviously creatively and financially motivated. At the time, Benaroya released a statement that claimed “the criteria for financing" was "not being met by producers,” and that they had “[missed] a number of financing criteria deadlines.” Thus, the company felt at risk and pulled the plug.
Asssayas and his producers never really had their chance to respond, so when talking to the filmmaker last week about “Clouds Of Sils Maria,” we had to ask. “It was a horror,” Assayas said. “A long painful horror story. Let’s just say that did it put me off being involved with these kinds of projects in any kind of way in the foreseeable future.”

DEADLINE: Robert De Niro And Robert Pattinson's 'Idol's Eye' Shuttered

DEADLINE: Robert De Niro And Robert Pattinson's 'Idol's Eye' Shuttered | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Benaroya Pictures has shut down the Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson, and Rachel Weisz heist thriller Idol’s Eye, just as filming was set to commence in Toronto. “Due to the criteria for financing not being met by producers, Benaroya Pictures has formally decided to discontinue financing the motion picture titled Idol’s Eye,” the production company said in a statement.

Idol’s Eye was to be director Olivier Assayas’s next film following Cannes entry Clouds of Sils Maria. Benaroya came aboard as producer and financer in May, when De Niro also signed on to star.

Filming was initially slated to begin in October in Chicago and Toronto. Benaroya Pictures, whose films include Margin Call, Kill Your Darlings, and the Werner Herzog’s upcoming Queen of the Desert co-starring Pattinson, say they were forced to shut down production after other producers on the project failed to meet financing deadlines.

Next Rob's Project: What is Idol’s Eye about?

Next Rob's Project: What is Idol’s Eye about? | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

A script ... was based on a 2007 Playboy article called Boosting the Big Tuna, written by reporter Hillel Levin. The story was based on the murders of a crew of guys who robbed the house of Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo’s (AKA “Big Tuna”) in 1978. After the break-in, several guys suspected of the crime were murdered with, well, let’s say extreme prejudice. Some were tortured. There’s a lot more to the story than that; it’s a hell of a gangland saga, with violence and a big multi-layered investigation.

So where does the name Idol’s Eye come from? The Idol’s Eye is a big diamond — a big famous diamond, in fact. In the ’70s it was owned by a Chicago jeweler. It was never stolen, and was not part of the Big Tuna robbery. But there’s a connection. The owner of the diamond was Harry Levinson, a mob-connected guy. And in 1977 a thief named John Mendell targeted Levinson for his diamond, and planned a huge heist of the rock that was only partially successful. John Mendell is one of the guys who broke into Big Tuna’s place a year later.

So what story is Assayas telling? We’d assume that De Niro is going to play Accardo, and Pattinson will be Mendell. But the title suggests this could be more about the attempt to steal the Idol’s Eye than the Accardo robbery. Both are big, great stories, with potential for some excellent cinematic flavor.

Idol’s Eye – “Robert Pattinson will play the burglar ringleader…”

Idol’s Eye – “Robert Pattinson will play the burglar ringleader…” | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Hillel Levin:

"...director Olivier Assayas ...will next work on Idol's Eye, a movie based on my April 2007 article for Playboy called, "Boosting the Big Tuna." The story is about burglars who break into the home of Chicago's longtime Godfather, Tony Accardo. Robert Pattinson will play the burglar ringleader, who is based on John Mendell--a freelance "juice man" or "wire man" capable of overcoming the most sophisticated burglar alarms, but also the proprietor of a machine shop who was desperate to go "legit." De Niro will play Accardo, who ruled Chicago's mob for five decades. Despite the fact that he's hardly a household name, I would argue that Accardo was America's most important organized crime figure in the twentieth century. He not only influenced politics in the Windy City, but also corrupted wide swaths of the union movement (e.g. Teamsters and Laborers), and probably did more to build the Las Vegas Strip (mostly with Teamster pension funds) than anyone else. He features prominently in my play, "Assassination Theater." By the time of the burglary, he had become practically an establishment figure in Chicago--unusually accessible to the neighbors in his wealthy suburb, courtly to the power elite, with whom he occasionally rubbed shoulders, but still bone-chillingly ruthless with anyone who crossed his path in the criminal world--as Mendell eventually found out. It will be fascinating to see De Niro's approach to the part. One funny note: the dispute between Accardo and Mendell centers on the burglary of a high-end pawn shop.

Cannes 2014: Interview of Robert Pattinson in Hello Magazine

Cannes 2014: Interview of Robert Pattinson in Hello Magazine | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Several excerpts:

About Cannes:

"It’s a different energy and not like a normal premiere, where it’s just friends of the studio or whatever. There’s a very real chance people are going to be vocal about if they like it or not. It’s exciting. I think people are more interested and people talk about the movies afterwards – they’re not just going to the screening so they can go to the party afterwards; they actually want to see it."

About new project with Olivier Assayas Idol's Eye:

"It’s a true story about a bunch of thieves who rob a shop in Chicago without realizing that it’s a front for the Mafia. It’s quite simple story but it’s so densely written and it follows the real story incredibly well. It’s incredibly realistic and real ensemble thing. It’s really cool; really, really cool."

About critics:

"... I can’t really deal with criticism very well and I’ve already got it coming from one angle. I don’t feel the need to get it from somewhere else."

Chicago Tribune about Robert Pattinson's next project 'Idol's Eye'

Chicago Tribune about Robert Pattinson's next project 'Idol's Eye' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

“I’m working with (director Olivier) Assayas in November, which is crazy,” Pattinson told French magazine, Le Nouvel Observateur. “...It’s called ‘Idol’s Eye.’ It’s a gangster movie. It’s a true story about ... some thieves who rob a porn store without realizing it’s a mafia front in the late 70s. The script is amazing.”

Assayas said the start date for filming is tentative, as is the location of the shoot.

“I can't really discuss it much because it's not locked or finalized, but my next film will be in the U.S.,” Assayas told the Hollywood Reporter. “We are shooting in Chicago, and it's a genre movie based on a real story called ‘Idol's Eye,’ the name of a famous diamond. If everything goes according to plan, it should be shooting by late fall.”
