At the official Cannes press conference following the screening, he announced that he’ll star in “Parrots of Summer,” the upcoming film from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ciro Guerra (“Embrace of the Serpent”) as well as another film with David Michôd, with whom he worked on “The Rover.” In the can is “Damsel,” a Zellner brothers western with Mia Wasikowska, which is seeking distribution; coming up are movies with French filmmaker Claire Denis (father-daughter space drama “High Life”) and “Christine” director Antonio Campos.

Robert Pattinson's Interview With The Herald Scotland At the Cannes Film Festival

Robert Pattinson's Interview With The Herald Scotland At the Cannes Film Festival | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

With two new films to bang the drum for - The Rover and Maps To The Stars - it's Pattinson's second time in Cannes in two years, following his arrival as a limo-dwelling billionaire in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. That was a turning point, he says. "I'd never even been to a festival before. It makes you think differently about things. You realise what you like. Cannes means a lot to me. I'm basically aiming for everything to get into Cannes."

Smartly, the only relationships he's building right now are with directors, meeting and greeting even before scripts are on the table. "I got sick of just waiting for something to happen," he says.
Strangely, despite his unfathomable levels of fame, he's not the sort of actor the Hollywood studios have come calling for to front huge summer blockbusters. "Maybe after the first Twilight, I had offers for that kind of stuff, but I've never really been part of the group that gets offered that stuff. You get quite defined by Twilight in terms of big franchise stuff."

New Robert Pattinson Interview in ‘A Nous Paris’ Magazine (France) – Same Interview as Direct Matin

New Robert Pattinson Interview in ‘A Nous Paris’ Magazine (France) – Same Interview as Direct Matin | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Translation:

Q: The two films that you have here address two different worlds. Which is less human : Hollywood in “Maps to the Stars” or The Apocalypse In “The Rover”?

A: I do not know, this is almost equivalent. Hollywood portrayed in “Maps to the Stars” is a bit exaggerated. This is a difficult place but you just have to get the right people. It’s a bit like in the desert (laughs).

Q: And where is it more complicated to turn? In Hollywood or in the Australian desert?

A: In Hollywood! Definitely! Because every time you turn outside, there are 50 paparazzi. As soon as I move , dozens of cars literally come out of nowhere to follow me. It’s very annoying. But in the desert, I did not have this problem. There was nobody. It is easier to work and concentrate.

Q: In The Rover, playing the brother of a gangster slightly mentally retarded . It was hard to do for you?

A: No. It came like that , of course (laughs). Finally it was one of the easiest for me to play roles, because there was no limit . I could go in all possible directions. It really is a very free role .

Q: How did you prepare?

A: Literally, I tried to play an animal, one of those dogs who are junkies hunt all day long, but always come back. They are desperately trying to attract attention. I tried to think about it while playing.

Q: In The Rover , you have a dirty haircut and damaged teeth . It was a way for you to break your image of sex symbol for teenagers?

A: No, but when you no longer have to worry about your appearance, you wonder no longer : ” What do I look now? ” Your ego is not flattered by the role it makes the job easier.

Q: It is a long process of becoming an actor of auteur films and out of this that sticks to your skin since Twilight picture?

A: It took a little time. These are meetings that I have made it several years ago and bearing fruit today. But it is actually Cronenberg ‘s Cosmopolis that changed everything .

HITFIX: David Michod didn't know what Robert Pattinson was capable of until 'The Rover' (CANNES 2014 Promo)

HITFIX: David Michod didn't know what Robert Pattinson was capable of until 'The Rover' (CANNES 2014 Promo) | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Director David Michod talks about working with Robert Pattinson in his new thriller The Rover.

"I found him really beguiling and I loved his physical energy, and he was smart and had a wonderfully open face," Michôd recalls. "When it came time to start testing for the character, I knew I wanted to see him, but yeah, I didn’t know what he was capable of. I think he knew that people didn’t know what he was capable of as well and so he was very willing to work and work hard.  But very quickly when he came in to test for me I could just see this skill set that he just hasn’t been able to showcase."

Those instincts paid off. Pattinson's work is clearly the best of his career...

LA Times: 'Maps to the Stars' skewers Hollywood

LA Times: 'Maps to the Stars' skewers Hollywood | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Cronenberg pitched the movie to numerous studio executives dating back 10 years. He received numerous rejections, with executives telling him, as he recalls, "I wouldn't do that to the business I love." (The film cobbled its budget together independently.) He did not ask those executives if they felt the script was off-base or too accurate.

The actors, at least, said they saw their own experiences in the film.

"There's something about L.A. and the fame and the hunger and the need for acknowledgment that's a little more infantile," Cusack said in a news conference. "It felt a little" — he paused — "familiar that way."...

Pattinson, who after the "Twilight" series has been on his share of big Hollywood sets, said ..."The child actor part felt very real. Almost every set I've been on has had someone like that."

Asked about his experiences with some of the more narcissistic portrayals, he said, "Well, Hollywood attracts crazy people, and then you add a lot of money, so…" his voice trailing off.

Interview of Robert Pattinson to VANITY FAIR (Cannes 2014)

Interview of Robert Pattinson to VANITY FAIR (Cannes 2014) | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

VF.com spoke to Pattinson at Cannes and quizzed him about how he prepped for the roles, what he finds most ridiculous about Hollywood, and how he handled sudden superstardom at the tender age of 21.

Excerpt:

Q:...when David Cronenberg called and said, “Let’s do another movie together,” were you excited?

A: Yeah, I hadn’t even read the script and I was like, “Yep.” That was another character who didn’t have any kind of back story or anything. I said, “What kind of guy do you think he is?” And he said, “I don’t know, what do you think?” And we are shooting in two days and I’m like, Great. It’s exactly what happened on Cosmopolis. We don’t talk about it at all and then turn up and every single scene I did was one take. It’s ridiculous.

Q: So he just lets you read the script and find the character yourself?

A: With Cosmopolis, he knew exactly what he wanted. With Maps, he just liked what I was doing on the first take.

Q: Were you guys worried at all that there may be some backlash in the community if you’re making fun of Hollywood people?

A: I don’t think we were really making fun of it. Though I like how basically the only bad review we got was from The Hollywood Reporter.

Cannes 2014: Robert Pattinson's Portrait & Interview with Le Parisien | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Several excerpts:

About work with Croneberg and role in Maps to the Stars:

"I think I would do all of Cronenberg's films if he asked me. Two years after Cosmopolis where my character lived permanently in his big limousine, it amused me that he gave me the role of a driver of the stars in Hollywood. It's a secondary role, but oh so significant, alongside the great Julianne Moore."

About Hollywood:

"A sort of bonfire of vanities. A fierce place, full of money , where ego and jealousy are terribly intensified. Where everyone wants to be famous at any cost. It's very, very hard to live there. Especially, if you do not have a serious professional environment and real friends to keep you from all temptations. Me, I 'm doing fine. I managed to live my life and fame. Probably, because I know its dangers and pitfalls ..."

VARIETY from CANNES: Robert Pattinson Shares His Thoughts on Returning to 'Twilight'

VARIETY from CANNES: Robert Pattinson Shares His Thoughts on Returning to 'Twilight' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

.... the actor with the biggest smile on his face may have been Robert Pattinson, who earned some of his best reviews yet for “The Rover,” the Australian action film directed by David Michod which screened to critics over the weekend. He also had strong buzz going into Monday’s competition debut of “Maps to the Stars,” a drama directed by David Cronenberg.

Pattinson told Variety he would love to collaborate with Cronenberg again. “He’s incredibly respectful.” The two first worked together on 2012′s “Cosmopolis.”

Pattinson said that he’s getting ready to shoot actor Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, “The Childhood of a Leader.” He added that “Brady is just brilliant.” And Pattinson revealed that he’s been talking to “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine about starring in one of his upcoming projects, although the details haven’t been worked out yet.

Pattinson acknowledged the role of Edward Cullen that made him an international superstar came as a complete surprise.

“No one thought it was going to be a big deal,” Pattinson said of the 2008 vampire movie. “We thought it was going to be like ‘Thirteen,’” he said, referencing the directorial debut of Catherine Hardwicke.

“I couldn’t do another ‘Twilight’ movie,” said Pattinson, who is 28. “I’m too old.”

Robert Pattinson Interview With Szeretettel Hollywoodból in Cannes

Robert Pattinson Interview With Szeretettel Hollywoodból in Cannes | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Q: Is it easier or is it more difficult, life after Twilight?
A: Uhm, I don’t know. It’s kind of easier to not have to basically do a movie. I was, like, constantly working on Twilight, so whenever I had a gap in between the two Twilight movies, I had to fit something else in, and I had no time to prepare for it and stuff. And now I kind of have that time to really decide what you wanna do and it does make things a little bit easier.
Q: Rob, I think you are the one from the Twilight group, that really makes smart choices. Who’s your support group who kind of helps you shape your career?
A: I have great agents and managers but it took me a little while to realize to just work with the best directors in the world. That’s the only decision for me. It doesn’t matter what is the script, it’s just do it. I just only worked with Werner Herzog, it’s just a small part and I had absolutely no idea how to play at all but they offered it to just do it and something will happen, I just.. you’re not gonna be bad in it.. or I might be, but the likelyhood is, even if it is not that good really, all experience in a way and I think it’s all I want out of cinema.

Cannes 2014: Interview of Robert Pattinson in Hello Magazine | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Several excerpts:

About Cannes:

"It’s a different energy and not like a normal premiere, where it’s just friends of the studio or whatever. There’s a very real chance people are going to be vocal about if they like it or not. It’s exciting. I think people are more interested and people talk about the movies afterwards – they’re not just going to the screening so they can go to the party afterwards; they actually want to see it."

About new project with Olivier Assayas Idol's Eye:

"It’s a true story about a bunch of thieves who rob a shop in Chicago without realizing that it’s a front for the Mafia. It’s quite simple story but it’s so densely written and it follows the real story incredibly well. It’s incredibly realistic and real ensemble thing. It’s really cool; really, really cool."

About critics:

ET Canada: Robert Pattinson: 'I'm So Bad At Auditioning'

ET Canada: Robert Pattinson: 'I'm So Bad At Auditioning' | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Few things in life are as nerve-wracking as auditioning for a movie role. Even for Robert Pattinson, one of the most successful and popular actors in the world, auditioning for a role can be an almost unbearably stressful experience. To get the lead role in The Rover, for instance, Pattinson had to audition in front of director David Michod (Animal Kingdom), and by his own estimation, the audition did not go well.
"I'm so bad at auditioning, and I was terrified that I wasn't going to get it," Pattinson tells ET Canada exclusively. "I really, really fought for it."
What made Pattinson—an actor with no shortage of scripts coming his way—fight so hard for this particular role? As Pattinson explained, the role of Reynolds (a naive, simple-minded drifter) was simply too good to pass up.
"It's a character that doesn't really have any constraints," he said. "It's not really specified where he's from or what his desires are or even his mental state and I felt really relaxed doing it because you could just do whatever you wanted, basically."
Unlike during his audition, Pattinson was completely at ease playing the character during filming—an experience which the Twilight star says was a first. "It felt for a second that I knew what I was doing because I just sort of fell into acting and I never really felt like that before," he said.

Cannes: David Michôd talks about meeting & casting Robert Pattinson, Cannes and ROVER

Cannes: David Michôd talks about meeting & casting Robert Pattinson, Cannes and ROVER | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Indiewire sat down with David Michôd in Cannes to discuss his experience at the festival, why it took so long to follow up "Animal Kingdom," and why he cast Robert Pattinson in a role sure to surprise the actor's many fans.

Several excerpts:

Q: About his [Rob's] performance, he's a true revelation in "The Rover." What led you to cast him?
A: It was a meeting. I still haven't seen the "Twilight" films. I don't feel I need to. I had a meeting with him before I knew I was going to make "The Rover," and found him instantly beguiling.
Q: Why did you meet with him if you weren't familiar with his work?
A: I'd seen nothing. It's that weird thing that happens after a movie you've made has gotten some attention — you go on a billion blind dates. And this was one of them. I didn't really know anything about him, but I really liked him. He was really smart, funny and open. He seemingly had great taste. He had a really interesting and eclectic knowledge of cinema. When it came time to cast for "The Rover," I just had this weird feeling that he was the one I wanted to see the most. Fortunately he really wanted to do the movie.
I mean I put him through the wringer. We worked for three of four hours during our camera test, but I felt I knew within the first few minutes that I found the guy for the character. The next few hours were just us exploring. He helped me find the character.

The new chapter for Pattinson really began with his first collaboration with Cronenberg in the 2012 stylish Don DeLillo adaptation "Cosmopolis." Since then, he says, he's been choosing parts solely by director.

"I sort of had a bit of a list," says Pattinson. "The things I'm going to do next I've said yes to them before I've even seen a script."

Along with Michod ("Animal Kingdom") and Cronenberg, Pattinson has shot movies with Werner Herzog and Anton Corbijn. He's lined up films with Harmony Korine ("Spring Breakers") and Olivier Assayas ("Carlos").

Guy Pearce about Rob's performance in ROVER:

"I wasn't aware of what he was capable of," says Pearce. "On the second day, I said to David, 'He's really (expletive) good, isn't he?'"

Cronenberg about Rob in COSMOPOLIS and Maps to the Stars:

"Playing the lead in 'Cosmopolis' was not at the time what he wanted to do. I had to talk him into it. He was really looking forward to playing a smaller role in an ensemble piece. In a way, ('Maps') is kind of a perfect continuation of our relationship, which I really value."

David Michod about Rob's performance in ROVER:

"The second he started doing the character, I was getting excited," says Michod. "I was getting excited about the performance he would give, excited about the character as invented by him and excited by the prospect of taking a possibly very underestimated franchise star and letting him demonstrated what he's actually capable of."

"I'm open to everything". "I don't think I've really changed, I've just been lucky. It's unbelievable what's happening to me, it's completely crazy."

The actor assures that he's not shutting himself down from big production movies, or to a sequel to the Twilight saga. "I'm open to everything but I'm too old now. That being said, if Tarantino directs it, I'd have to say yes!"

"I don't chose the movies I make depending on money or affluence anymore and it makes me really happy," Robert Pattinson continues that he would love to work with Jacques Audiard.
