Disney appoints a group to determine a new, official Star Wars canon

Disney appoints a group to determine a new, official Star Wars canon | Digital Cinema - Transmedia | Scoop.it
The Expanded Universe as we knew it will soon be no more.

Disney has created a special committee whose job it will be to figure out what is and isn't part of a completeStar Warscanon — meaning all the EU material created over the years will be judged, and either become official or deemed invalid.

Furthermore, this means at some point all new Star Wars spin-offs will matter, because they will all be official. I don't know how I feel about that...."

Lucy O'Brien:  "The writers behind The Last of Us, Gone Home, Tomb Raider and The Stanley Parable give us their thoughts on where storytelling in video games is headed next."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, January 13, 2014 3:05 AM

There is an old but still pertinent argument that storytelling in video games is the last great bastion for the medium to conquer. That game developers working in the 'mainstream space' have traditionally struggled to utilise video games as a storytelling medium, struggled to harmonise play and Hollywood-like narratives, and struggled to inject real meaning into their games without rendering the player a frustrated passive participant.

Learning to Think Critically

Via cynthia jabar

cynthia jabar's curator insight, December 5, 2013 8:31 PM

ABSTRACT: This article examines whether exposure to the arts has an effect on the ability of students to engage in critical thinking. We conduct a randomized controlled trial involving 3,811 students who were assigned by lottery to participate in a School Visit Program at the newly opened Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Students who participated in the School Visit Program demonstrated significantly stronger critical thinking skills when analyzing a new painting. These effects were larger for students from more disadvantaged backgrounds. In light of recent declines in the availability of the arts for disadvantaged populations, our results have important policy implications for efforts to restore and expand access to the arts.

Hollywood studios 2013 performance review

"As 2013 comes to an end, Hollywood studios are reviewing their last year's performance in theatrical. For the first time ever, Warner Brothers surpassed $3bn for international box office, according to data from Variety and Screen Daily. With total revenues at $5.04bn, of which $3.14bn from international sales and $1.90bn from domestic, Warner topped the list among other Hollywood studios.  Warner had a total of 19 new releases in 2013, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was the biggest hit with $653m box office. Other top performers include Gravity ($398.7m, and still on release), Man of Steel ($371.8m) and Pacific Rim ($305.8m).

Disney ranked second with a total box office of $4.73bn worldwide, and also crossed the $3bn for the first time in international revenue ($3.01bn from overseas and $1.72bn from domestic). Disney actually had a very impressive year, given the fact that it only had 10 releases in 2013, significantly fewer than Warner. Disney's highest grossing film was Iron Man 3, which generated $1.21bn globally and was also the number one film in the whole industry in 2013...."

How Stories Change the Brain

cynthia jabar's curator insight, December 22, 2013 5:11 PM

We learn through stories: "evidence supports the view of some narrative theorists that there is a universal story structure. These scholars claim every engaging story has this structure, called the dramatic arc. It starts with something new and surprising, and increases tension with difficulties that the characters must overcome, often because of some failure or crisis in their past, and then leads to a climax where the characters must look deep inside themselves to overcome the looming crisis, and once this transformation occurs, the story resolves itself.
