Rather than focus on industry trends, I thought it might be valuable to stop and take a look at the trending changes in how learning experience practitioners work and think. Changes in these practices and mindsets tend to build up through the years until they reach a tipping point and become the new standard.

Multiple factors are affecting how we now work and think about our roles, such as:

ubiquitous technology (personal and professional),
reduced importance of memorizing information when it can be looked upacknowledgement that traditional one-time interventions are not effective
increased sharing and conversation about research and new techniquesa workforce that is overburdened with lengthy training

Sharing emotion-driven narratives that resonate with other people is something humans are quite good at. We’ve been sitting around campfires telling stories for tens of thousands of years, and we still do it. One reason why is because it’s an effective way to communicate: We remember stories.

But what makes for good storytelling?

Mark Magellan, a writer and designer at IDEO U, puts it this way: “To tell a story that someone will remember, it helps to understand his or her needs. The art of storytelling requires creativity, critical-thinking skills, self-awareness, and empathy.”

All those traits are fundamentally human, but as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more commonplace, even experts whose jobs depend on them possessing those traits — people like Magellan — foresee it playing a bigger role in what they do.

Artificial Intelligence may seem like something from the future, with its inclusion in sci-fi thrillers and movies. While AI has yet to take over the world with destructive prone robots, it is becoming more and more prevalent in our everyday lives. Whether we know it or not, most of us probably use AI every day for simple tasks like taking a picture, parking our car, asking our phones what the weather looks like, or using our personal home assistants to turn on the lights.

Our technology has yet to reach the level of self-awareness, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t being used in creative and innovative ways every day including the classroom. Artificial Intelligence in the classroom is still a relatively new concept, but one that is being explored by many researchers and educators alike. Read below for some ways that artificial education can be used in your classroom and how it’s becoming the future of education.

The greatest fear of parents and teachers is that the tech industry wants to replace teachers with computers. They fear that the business leaders want to cut costs by replacing expensive humans with inexpensive machines, that never require health care or a pension. They believe that education requires human interaction. They prefer experience, wisdom, judgment, sensibility, sensitivity and compassion in the classroom to the cold, static excellence of a machine.

This is a Diane Ravitch article. Teaching is relational and adds the human touch computers never can.

There are likely more than five risks. For example, the picture looks and I guess feels like a "traditional" classroom with desks in neat orderly rows.

Curiosity is a powerful catalyst for learning. Young children want to understand the world around them, and naturally reveal their interests by asking questions – sometimes even too many questions! As educators, we may feel pressure to keep going with our intended lesson plan or to get to our ‘point.’ This may lead us, as teachers, to push ahead instead of listening to a child’s question, or to answer it briefly and move on. The goal of education should be to nurture and grow minds that are ready to solve problems and think critically, and asking questions is a necessary skill in that process.

In eLearning, we are at the very start of the hype curve with distributed ledgers: we can imagine the technology solving one of our recurring problems. To wit, we in online learning are often in the business of managing transactions. Not financial transactions—those get offloaded to payment gateway. We manage continuing education (CE) credit transactions: a learner completes a CE activity and receives CE credit, or “credit hours,” in return. When a learner accumulates a sufficient balance of CE credits over a certain span of time, she achieves maintenance of certification.

As we know, these transactions are often managed in the most labor-intensive way possible. There are big problems with tracking and verifying a learners’ CE balance. Reporting CE issuance to accreditors is also a mess (are you familiar with PARS?). This state of affairs makes distributed CE ledgers look very appealing. First, as with Bitcoin, the distributed ledger method is an ideal way of tying credits to individual learners’ accounts, reducing the potential for counterfeiting credits. Just as importantly, ledgers transparently track the movement of credits from party to party – in our case, from CE provider to certificant to certifying board.
