Don't just teach them, let's challenge them!

Don't just teach them, let's challenge them! | Rich Media Learning | Scoop.it

Learning is about curiosity and challenges. About meaningful tasks. And about building knowledge, skills and attitudes as a natural consequence and result. I believe rich learning designs start from real questions, exploration, discussion and discovery. Anyone preparing classes or designing textbooks or multi-media might benefit from powerful yet simple colour model to make better designs. This is how it works.

The Colours model distinguishes between four universal elements needed to design learning programmes. Under each element specific activities and specific types of media used can be grouped. The message is: go green...get the balance right! And consider starting with green...and then do the bits of red or blue that are needed. And why not let them create the "red".... (build the knowlegde, make it explicit, get it checked and then share it....making "red" dynamic instead of teachers giving red to learners!).

Green learning or red or blue? What's your balance?

Green learning or red or blue? What's your balance? | Rich Media Learning | Scoop.it

If that's what you want...what would Bloom say you should be designing: what types of thinking skills are green. Try to make you lists for the different colours and the check the balance between what it says in your policy and what happens in your classes and textbooks or digital media.

Unlock their brains; stop boring stuff

Unlock their brains; stop boring stuff | Rich Media Learning | Scoop.it

How to keep their minds going....see Ken Robinson about where education should go (www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U) and try more "green stuff"  instead of the boring stuff. Green? Open, collaborative, activating, investigating type of learning activities. Compare "red" (transfer of knowledge) or "blue" (closed "right-wrong" type of exercises). Get you balance right: go green and add bits of red and blue where and when needed!

TPACK: time for a next level!

TPACK: time for a next level! | Rich Media Learning | Scoop.it

From TPACK to MPACK:

When we agree to define the T in TPACK in a wider sense than just “technology” we get a more powerful model for learning designs. Technology is just one of the ways to deliver and manage the design (be it with or without a teacher, a coach or a peer). We have in mind a “medium “ of delivery and management when we design an activity. The richer the range of media the more flexibility we have in making strong designs for learning. The media range from the live teacher or coach to pre-recorded or live video to digital games. Designers can feel free to select and combine media depending on functional need and availability (and affordability). So Rich Media Designs are learning designs with the best possible match between content – pedagogy – media. Best possible depending on context and always backed-up by evidence.

MPACK? A good learning design depends on Media, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge.
