Jay-Z's 'MCHG' Forces R.I.A.A. To Change 30-Day Gold & Platinum Rule - XXL

Jay-Z's 'MCHG' Forces R.I.A.A. To Change 30-Day Gold & Platinum Rule - XXL | RIAA Changes Gold and Platinum Rules | Scoop.it
Jay-Z is making new rules, indeed. In light of Hov’s unprecedented digital deal with Samsung to purchase and distribute the first one million copies of his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, the Recording Industry Association of America has...
Daniel Milano's insight:

In addition to the RIAA adding digital downloads to their Gold & Platinum Program, they are also changing the 30 day rule. This rule is in place to ensure that any physical cd's that are returned do not count towards the program. The 'common sense update' chasnged the rule to reflect that digital downloads are counted as final sales without having to wait 30 days. Due to this rule Jay-Z has already been awarded a Platinum plaque for his deal with Samsung. This seems to be good for the industry as it creates new avenues for record companies to sell albums.

However, it also effects the Billboard charts by pushing traditional album sales to the side as these artists did not pre-sell their album to help advertise a new product or app. Currently J. Cole's album was at the top of the Billboard weekly sales. This new rule now pushes him down to the #2 album sold this week.

But then again there has never been a rule changed that doesn't negatively effect others.

I think it is genius that Jay-Z made the RIAA re-write the rules. He really thought the rules through to find a way to go Platinum before his album even releases.

RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America - July 15, 2013 | RIAA Changes Gold and Platinum Rules | Scoop.it
Daniel Milano's insight:

RIAA adds digital downloads to be included in album sales. I think this is a long time coming. Record labels, artists and industry employee's have been making money off of digital downloads from the second they started selling them. I thought it was an atrocity that they have not been included in artists album sales until now.
