India explained in 20 maps

India explained in 20 maps | Return to Art and Music | Scoop.it
The following set of 20 maps of India look into the story of this riveting country. A captivating place to both travel and read about.

Some of these maps nicely highlight some regional differences within India. There are plenty of articles like this now (for example, 40 maps that explain the Middle East, and 38 Maps that explain Europe). While we can all agree that maps are great analytical tools that can be very persuasive, sometimes we can pretend that they are the end all, be all for any situation.  Also, any list like this, it is bound to have a few clunkers, but it is worth it  to find those teaching gems.

For the Love of Maps

For the Love of Maps | Return to Art and Music | Scoop.it
I have a confession to make; I’m a map geek. Even as a kid watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, I was fascinated by the map they used to segue between scenes to show Indiana Jones’ travels.

Unit 1 Nature and Perspectives of Geography

This article shows that people often still love maps. Some people grow out of map loving as a teenager and it is not as popular for people to like them anymore. This article tells haw maps are being pushed out of style and how it is hurting our intelligence.

This ties into human geography through the fact that it is needed to have a passion for geographical thinking to even get into Human Geography. This shows how not learning about mas can drastically hurt and is drawing away from the geographical field.

Jason Schneider's curator insight, January 27, 2015 12:02 AM

I'm taking World Regional Geography because I love maps as well. I am more of a visual learner rather than a verbal learner. In my spare time, I like to map out my dream restaurants and my dream home and turning it into a map itself helps me understand locations in the easiest way. It also helps me identify one area's size and shape in comparison to other's.

Ollas are a great way to water plants, and are equally at home in the vegetable or flower garden.  Roots grow deeper, there is no need to water as often, and no water is lost to evaporation or runoff.

This old-fashioned watering method has been used throughout history. Follow the photo-link to discover how to make your own olla at a fraction of the cost of buying one at retail.

Surging Seas Interactive Map

Global warming has raised global sea level about 8" since 1880, and the rate of rise is accelerating. Rising seas dramatically increase the odds of damaging floods from storm surges.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, July 27, 2016 1:27 PM

This interactive map from Climate Central dramatically shows what locations are most vulnerable to sea level rise.  You can adjust the map to display anywhere from 1 to 10 feet of sea level rise to compare the impact to coastal communities.  This dynamic map lets to view other layers to contextualize potential sea level rise by toggling on layers that include, population density, ethnicity, income, property and social vulnerability.

Paw Paw hybrids or not? - Edible Landscape Forum - GardenWeb

Paw Paw hybrids or not? - Edible Landscape Forum - GardenWeb | Return to Art and Music | Scoop.it
You really should plant 2 different ones for best pollination. If you don't have room for separate trees, just plant them together in one hole, and they'll grow, functionally, as one plant.

Paw Paws have purple/black, wierd looking flowers (remind me of the flowers of the tropical 'Bat Plant' minus the long filaments. They are pollinated by carrion-loving flies and beetles. The best way to get good pollination is to hang some sort of rotting meat in each tree. There was an article in 'Michigan Gardener' last year about a paw paw grower/breeder in S. Michigan, and he went fishing every year just before the blooming season and caught carp, hanging one in each tree. He also picked up roadkilled squirrels and bunnies. In lieu of carp or roadkill, he said chicken leg quarters were fine. His suggestion was to hang it as high in the tree as possible, from the taller, wispy branches, so that racoons, etc., didn't get the bait. Then, stay away from the trees for a week or so, until the worst of the stench is over.

Disgusting, but effective, according to the article. Last year in May, we had a major family medical crisis and I didn't get to do this, but I'm planning to do it this year -- looks like my paw paws will be blooming in about a week if the weather stays in the 60's/40's like the NWS is predicting.

If you think the environment is insignificant to your needs, then you are one of the most arrogant and ignorant people to walk on the planet that you're killing.

This is your life.  It doesn't matter how much money you're going to make off of destroying it if you're going to be dead as a result of your destruction.

Think carefully people.

Enjoy.

And, think about it.
