"So is the tracking most stores are doing creepy? Decide for yourself. Slideshow with sample dashboards that show what information stores see about consumers when they use these services. They're about as alarming as website analytics--which is to say, as alarming as anonymous bar graphs and heat maps can be."

We are all cookies now. And to allay concerns about that, several companies involved in offline tracking have said that they would work with a research group based in Washington to develop a series of “best practices” for privacy controls.

Several companies involved in offline tracking announced that they would be working with a Washington-based research group, the Future of Privacy Forum, to develop a series of “best practices” for privacy controls for what it called “retail location analytics.” The Future of Privacy Forum has an advisory board that includes “chief privacy officers, privacy academics and privacy advocates.”
