On Road to Autumn IPO, Farfetch Inks Middle East Deal

On Road to Autumn IPO, Farfetch Inks Middle East Deal | Hospitality, Retail and F&B by @AngusWoodhead | Scoop.it
The fashion ‘unicorn’ has entered into a joint venture with Chalhoub Group ahead of a $5 billion IPO that is set for September 2018, according to sources close to the deal.
Angus Woodhead's insight:
Farfetch and Chalhoub Group ink Middle East in effort to capture part of the massively untapped e-commerce luxury market in the region. Many are asking though, is it a bit late? Especially given the YNP JV with Alalbar, Al Tayer's Ounass platform, TheModist.com and Noon; who have all been playing in the Middle East's digital disrutpion game for sometime already.

Westfield sale looks like a knee-jerk reaction to the Amazon age | Nils Pratley

Westfield sale looks like a knee-jerk reaction to the Amazon age | Nils Pratley | Hospitality, Retail and F&B by @AngusWoodhead | Scoop.it
The rush to consolidate by owners of large shopping centres suggests they are seeking protection from the rise of online rivals
Angus Woodhead's insight:
"Knee-jerk reaction" seems like an attempt at headline grabbing to me. The Lowy's have divested from Westfield and/or remodelled numerous times over the last 10 years. They also have heavily invested in technology or their approach to their centres to combat online retail for some time. Additionally, they end up with nearly 3% of the combined entity - that's not running away from online.

For Unibail-Rodamco they have said it is an extension of their "strategy of concentration, differentiation and innovation". It also fills holes in Unibail's European portfolio plus provides the  group access to a high-quality US portfolio.

There's little doubt online is a threat to traditional shopping centres. However, I firmly believe there will always be a place for great shopping centres, run by very good owners/managers, that provide experiential offerings — including food, entertainment and other touch points online cannot offer; as well as fill our needs for social interaction.

How to Save the Mall

How to Save the Mall | Hospitality, Retail and F&B by @AngusWoodhead | Scoop.it

Do we still need shopping malls?

Angus Woodhead's insight:
Adoption of technology, evolving behaviours and customer expectations are driving changes in what we as consumers want from our shopping centres. The retail mix of a mall that we knew 10-15 years ago is no longer relevant. Department stores continue to lose their lustre as anchors, fashion as a percentage of space is decreasing; with F&B, lifestyle and experiential offerings taking their place. The developers that can react to these changes and evolve will deliver malls that we want to visit, shop at or just enjoy with others. Ticking the box on our want and need to be gregarious.
