Located in the Laurentian Mountains on the southern embankment of the Lievre River in Canada,  the Mont-Laurier Theatre is a multi-purpose venue – theatre, convention centre and concert hall that emphasizes the importance of timber in the region. FABG based the design on an architectural proposition of a structural grid of cross-laminated wood beams that support the roof and create a canopy over the main entrance.

MVRDV's Reflective 'Wunderkammer' in Rotterdam is Given the Green Light | retail and design | Scoop.it

Rotterdam will soon have a new cabinet of curiosities to add to its collection of architectural icons.

For many years the city's Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, originally established in 1849, has required a safer space to house its world-class collection of painting, sculpture and prints. Last week the Municipality of Rotterdam voted in favor of the building’s construction and, with zoning approved, "the world’s first fully accessible art storage facility" is now slated to open its doors in 2018.

The building’s design, architect MVRDV claims, is in harmony with the arrangement of the existing public space. In their words, it is "a compact round volume with a small footprint [...] in order to spare the park." Its reflective glass façade, seen by many critics as the most overpowering and technically dubious aspect of the building's appearance will, in the designers' minds, actually "make the building less visible."

I have friends, she is Quebecois, and they are in fact doing a bicycle tour of Montréal and surroundings. Toronto, of course, did not. I lived in Montreal from '53 to '86. :)

The Obrenovac First Elementary School is the first established school in Belgrade, almost 200 years old. During the two centuries pupils of this school had no adequate indoor space for physical education and sports activities. 

From the very beginning the idea was to design low budget, energy efficient and sustainable building with no unnecessary details.

As Obrenovac Municipality is close to the river Sava banks, it is under the influence of the underground water. This was the crucial technical problem which had to be resolved from the first preliminary design phase. Through design process, the solution for these challenges has been successfully found by designing the waterproof concrete hull, 5 meters deep in the ground, just few centimeters over the highest underground water level. This concept provided some kind of waterproof box, as boat sink, for all premises inside.

A Farming Kindergarten in Vietnam with a Spiraling Green Roof | retail and design | Scoop.it

In Dongnai, Vietnam, Vo Trong Nghia Architects has completed the construction of ‘farming kindergarten’, a large pre-school designed to accommodate up to 500 children. The project is envisioned as a model of sustainability set within the tropical climate, allowing the school’s young inhabitants to understand the importance of sustainable education and design.

A fully accessible green roof drawn in a triple-ring-shape creates three courtyards enclosed by the looping structure, providing safe and secure playgrounds for the kindergarten’s occupants. The different levels and gradients created by the building’s spiral form offer a series of distinct outdoor learning environments, where children are able to forge a close relationship with the natural world.

Angophora House was designed by Richard Cole Architecture, and it is located in Waverton, a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

“Built over an escarpment in a densely urbanised heritage conservation area in Waverton, the form of this house responds to the difficult site using the elements of cave, platform and canopy. On entering the house from the upper road, one passes through a curvaceous enclosing concrete wall with rooftop garden over.

Two platforms launch into the space of the valley, extending out from the anchoring escarpment. Insulated timber moveable walls transform the space from warm and enclosing to open and unimpeded. A sheltering timber lined roof opens to the north, falls in response to the slope of the land and captures framed views of adjacent Angophora trees.

The escarpment is retained, raw and open to the rooms of the lower ground floor. A dramatic lift takes the owners to the garage on the street below.”

MARS Architects snagged first place in an international competition for the design Walltopia's Collider Activity Center, Sofia's first sustainable mixed use center.

Located in Sofia, the Collider Activity Center will mark the city's first green mixed use center to combine both leisure and exercise space. To tie together the site’s diverse programs, the architects inserted a series of dramatic climbing atriums into the folds of the building, creating a continuous climbing experience.

Super cool, gotta go to Sofia for this one. Deep Water solo outdoor pool, with boulder's galore in the park outside, not too mention a few K square ft of climbing inside. Outside walls are transparent showing climbers moves.. So nice.

The Gippsland Water Factory’s Vortex Centre houses office and laboratory functions and an interpretive experience for a major new water recycling plant. The vortex form of the building strongly expresses the dynamic movement of fluids down a pipe, at the same time providing a unique internal environment.

Combining cost performance, aesthetics, water education and ecological intelligence, the 650m2 facility is a beacon of exemplary sustainable design. The centre was designed as a teaching building, taking inspiration from a giant oculus, with a shell made up of seven barrels that fit into one another as they decrease in size, thereby resembling a vortex.

Taiwan Skyscraper's Facade Covered in Thousands of Wind Turbines | retail and design | Scoop.it

Beijing-based Decode Urbanism Office has designed a 1,150 foot (350m) skyscraper located in Taichung City, Taiwan, to house the city’s Department of Urban Development, commercial concerns, museums, retail areas and exhibitions spaces. 


The building’s design was inspired by the plum blossom, the national flower of China and Taiwan. The building’s twisting and turning structure is intended to evoke the experience of plum blossoms bursting into bloom.

To do so, the facade has thousands of small diamond shaped wind turbines, which produce enough energy to power the building. These wind generators are set into the facade grid, oscillating as wind skirts the building.

On a hot day, instead of cranking up the air conditioning, this house transforms: A screen and shell move out to wrap around the entire home, shading everything so it cools down.

"It provides this flexible control over heat gain from sunlight," says architect Todd Fix, who compares the screen and shell to extra layers of clothes you can put on or take off. "So if it's a cold day, the sensor will sense that, and it will close both to keep the heat inside. If you want more light in the space, you can open up the screen or open up the shell."

It's a way to create a passive, zero-energy home without the typical passive house design. "The living area is all glass, from the walls and ceiling to the floors," Fix says. "This opens up a house. Instead of having really thick, insulated walls that are opaque, so you can't see out or see in, it kind of opens you up to the environment."

NBBJ proposes a set of "shadowless" towers for London's rapidly changing skyline.

Architects from the global firm NBBJ have designed what they call a “No Shadow Tower” for a site along the Thames River in London. The hypothetical scheme, developed in response to a call for ideas from the architecture think tank New London Architecture (NLA), offers one way to lessen the impact of tall buildings on the urban fabric surrounding them.


NBBJ’s proposed scheme has a similar goal to Jean Nouvel’s recently completed One Central Park complex in Sydney, which depends on a giant heliostat to illuminate a garden that would otherwise often be in shade. But NBBJ uses the geometry of the buildings themselves to mitigate their shadows. The two London towers subtly twist and flair, with floor plates that are slightly larger on the upper floors. Developed with parametric design, the configuration is intended to reflect sunlight from the south face of the taller tower into the plaza below. This arrangement would create what Coop describes as dynamic pools of light...

Despite its name, the NBBJ proposal consists not of a single tower, but a pair of glass-clad skyscrapers—one about 50 stories tall and the other about 30 stories. Kidney-shaped in plan, with their concave elevations facing each other, the two buildings together define a plaza at the ground. This space captured NBBJ’s attention. “Although tall buildings have an impact on the skyline, their success or failure comes down to what occurs at the base,” says Christian Coop, design director of the firm’s London office.

How can one transform a collection of concrete tubes into a site for experiencing contemporary culture?

That was the question posed by British architect and artist Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio, whose imaginative designs can be found everywhere from Manchester to Shanghai. Heatherwick is used to creating striking sculptures on a grand scale, but his latest proposal is larger than any before—he plans to carve an art museum from the depths of an old silo in South Africa’s capital city, Cape Town. The building is a monumental sculpture in itself, and Heatherwick’s challenge was twofold: protect and celebrate the heritage of the city’s industrial past while simultaneously creating something wholly new within the inherited structure.

Efficient, Contextual and Connected to the Environment: the T House in Quebec, Canada

Efficient, Contextual and Connected to the Environment: the T House in Quebec, Canada | retail and design | Scoop.it

Taking cues from its bucolic environment, this architecture is defined and modulated by the natural views, sunlight and the topography of the site.

T House was designed with state of the art technical specifications and a geothermal system for energy resources in a rural setting. Fenestration was applied as a function of climate and orientation to ensure the comfort of each space in winter and summer, and operable windows provide cross ventilation.

To the north, the house has few openings. To the south, the roof of the central space projects out over the patio just enough to protect the lobby from overheating in the summer while allowing winter rays to penetrate and bring solar gain. Concrete and natural stone flooring, cool in the summer; since they are exposed to direct sunlight and equipped with a hydronic heating system, they provide ideal comfort during the cold seasons as well...

The first volume, 2 –storey and roughly cubic in shape is clad with wood siding. The second, a single-storey 24m long rectangle, embedded in the ground at one end and cantilevered over the hill at the other end is wrapped in composite cement panels. The center of the composition is an empty space of transition between these two volumes: transparently opening onto a spectacular panorama of Appalachian mountain ridges with Mount Sutton peaking on the horizon.

The Port of Seville needed a new Cruise Ship Terminal with a flexible character, multipurpose, extendable, easily removable and even movable.

This would permit to accomodate the unpredictable number of passengers in the port and it does not limit the possibilities of the urban-port valuable space of the Muelle de las Delicias. The Port Authority itself proposed to solve the project using sea containers. On the other hand, the place, near the historic centre, was claiming an object of architectural quality that would promote the dialogue between the port and its urban environment.

The on-site construction work could only last 15 days, the maximum time between two consecutive cruises docking. The modular construction with recycled shipping containers would be mostly finished in workshop, ensuring the precision of the on-site work...

Sustainability and Innovative Design: Green Homes at the Solar Decathlon | retail and design | Scoop.it

Orange County hosted the U.S. Department of Energy's biennial green building event the Solar Decathlon this year, constructing a village of 'solar homes' in Irvine's Great Park, open to the public two weekends in October.

The twenty student-built projects compete in ten contests with specific criteria, ranging from architecture and engineering to communications and energy balance. The individual contest scores are totaled at the end of the competition to determine overall livability, efficiency and affordability, awarding the team with the highest overall score first place.
