Behind the News

Behind the News | Resources for primary school teachers | Scoop.it
Behind the News is a high-energy, fun way for upper primary and secondary students to learn about current issues and events in their world.
Molly Rose's insight:

Behind the News is a FANTASTIC website that allows current affairs to be explored in the primary classroom. The reports are relevant to the world that the students are living in and therefore, the learning is more rich and meaningful. The language used throughout the news reports is tailored to be understood by primary aged students. The topics covered by the reports can be easily linked to a number of KLA’s, and the website is a great way to integrate ICT into the classroom.

Wombat Facts

Wombat is an animal that belongs to group of marsupials. It can be found in southeastern coastal regions of Australia and on the surrounding islands. Wombats prefer wet and forested areas on the slopes, open grasslands and eucalyptus forests. All wombat species are divided in two groups: bare-nosed and hairy-nosed wombat. Wombats are considered as pests in certain parts of Australia because they damage crops and protective fences. Farmers do not hesitate to kill them to protect their lands. Other threat to survival of wombats is habitat loss. These factors brought Northern hairy-nosed wombat to the edge of extinction.

Literacy circle roles

Molly Rose's insight:
A great range of BLMs for literacy circles.
Literacy circles are a fantastic teaching and learning tool to implement into the primary classroom. It is in these circles that students take responsibility for their learning and think both critically and creatively about texts.

Scaffolding support/modelling of the roles is required for the younger years.
