Riparian buffer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A riparian buffer is a vegetated area (a "buffer strip") near a stream, usually forested, which helps shade and partially protect a stream from the impact of adjacent land uses. It plays a key role in increasing water quality in associated streams, rivers, and lakes, thus providing environmental benefits. With the decline of many aquatic ecosystems due to agricultural production, riparian buffers have become a very common conservation practice aimed at increasing water quality and reducing pollution.

Riparian buffers act to intercept sediment, nutrients, pesticides, and other materials in surface runoff and reduce nutrients and other pollutants in shallow subsurface water flow.[1] They also serve to provide habitat and wildlife corridors in primarily agricultural areas. They can also be key in reducing erosion by providing stream bank stabilization.

A riparian buffer is usually split into three different zones, each having its own specific purpose for filtering runoff and interacting with the adjacent aquatic system. Buffer design is a key element in the effectiveness of the buffer. It is generally recommended that native species be chosen to plant in these three zones, with the general width of the buffer being 50 feet (15 m) on each side of the stream.[2]

Aristides Nakos's insight:

Inspired by the GGA paper, I searched riparian buffers, which are modestly subsidized by farm bills.

Aristides Nakos's insight:

We speak of change, but we have to look at matter from an economist's aka realist's lens. In other words, if want to be more renewable there has to be a greater REAL time incentive or equally as GREAT of a disincentive. The net result should be a shift of the supply & demand curve. For instance, significant taxation on carbon emissions.

Green versus Gray: Nature’s Solutions to Infrastructure Demands

Aristides Nakos's insight:

Excellent paper on GGA (Green Gray Analysis) using BCA (Best Cost Analysis) and CEA (Cost Effectiveness Analysis). Should we use conventional infrastructure such as dams and other options of the gray portfolio or proceed with the amicable, yet uncertain green solutions. For instance, riparian buffers are highly employed in agricultural heavy areas such as Iowa to mitigate the soil pollution.

Fortunately, Portland (Maine) has been maintaining the quality of its freshwater reservoir by natural means, which has waived its need to install a artificial filtration system. Recent development and findings have the Portland Water District considering its options about reducing the water treatment costs by common solutions.
