Google announced this morning it’s opening a dedicated machine learning research center in Europe, which will be based in its Zurich office. The center will focus on the development of products and research in the areas of Machine Intelligence. Specifically, says Google, it will research ways to improve machine learning infrastructure as well as how to put it into practical use. Researchers will also work with linguists to advance Natural Language Understanding – machines’ ability to understand and process human language.

His findings show that Apple AAPL 1.29% is ramping up its R&D spending at a rapid rate, suggesting that in just a few years, “we are no longer going to refer to Apple as the iPhone company.”

People are focusing on the wrong thing when analyzing Apple's path forward in the face of slowing iPhone sales. Instead of debating how much Apple will try to monetize the iPhone user base with services (not as much as consensus thinks), the company is instead planning its largest pivot yet. There are only a handful of logical explanations for Apple's current R&D expense trajectory, and all of them result in a radically different Apple. In a few years, we are no longer going to refer to Apple as the iPhone company.

The Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development has lent its voice to growing calls for more government spending in response to slowing global growth, a policy Canada’s government is already planning to pursue in its first federal budget.
Amid persistently low oil prices and a slowing growth in China, economy, the global economy urgently needs a stronger and more co-ordinated policy response to create jobs and boost equality, the OECD said in its annual Going for Growth report.

In today's low-growth Britain, politicians and newspapers regularly celebrate individual business leaders. GlaxoSmithKline's Andrew Witty and Google's Eric Schmidt are just two examples, with the coalition government timing its recent budget to coincide with UK investments of both these companies. And there are so few famous "homegrown" entrepreneurs that James Dyson is regularly celebrated in a way similar to Mussolini's supposedly using a picture of the same cow to boast of Italy's agricultural strength in the 1930s.

In 2011, developer and researcher Alexandra Elbakyan launched Sci-Hub, an online archive that shares research articles freely and openly without paywalls or restrictions. Four years later, as the archive passed 48 million articles, academic publishing giant Elsevier filed a copyright infringement claim against the site. Sci-Hub has ignored an injunction to stop distributing copyrighted articles because it is hosted in Russia, beyond the influence of the US courts. A March 17 hearing offered little change to stem the flow of research articles flowing from Sci-Hub to eager researchers.
