Reflections on the Future of Organization Development and Training in the Digital Age

By Mary Hauser

ATDChi Student Ambassador

What is Organization Development? How is it relevant to business in the digital age? Where does training fit in?

Having just completed my first class in Organization Development (OD), as part of my master’s program in Training and Development at Roosevelt University, I have been thinking about the field and how it is connected to training and adult learning, and why it is still relevant as we advance in the digital age.

Organization Development plays an important part in the health of an organization, ensuring that all the moving pieces work together smoothly. With so many functions in the typical organization, from Human Resources to IT and Finance, and so many human and non-human variables affecting organization on a daily basis, conflict and misalignment are inevitable. OD interventions are meant to systematically assess, diagnose, intervene and thereby positively affect positive change.

Here are four reflections on the future of OD and Training:

OD is akin to behavioral therapy for organizations. Much like mental health, in which there are many different variables that come together to affect how well a person manages day-to-day and in the long run, any issues in functioning or performance (behavior) of the organization are diagnosed, treated and assessed with interventions and change processes. Interventions and processes are designed so that people and teams are performing most efficiently, which in turn means the organization is also performing most efficiently as a system.Training will remain critical to fill skill gaps and affect positive change. An important part of affecting positive change includes training, or learning and development. When change happens in an organization, and new systems, skills or software are introduced, training is critical to fill skills gaps or improve efficiency in existing areas. The successful outcome of such training is meant to reinforce strategic change and alignment of organizational goals. Training in this sense is also a change agent in and of itself, as it affects on-the-job behavior and performance results at all levels of the organization.  With the rise of automation and new technology affecting most fields, training will remain essential from an OD perspective. When new systems or software automate business processes, training is critical to ensuring current staff has the new skills needed to keep operations functioning at optimal performance. Without training, the organization’s efficiency and ability to meet goals and client demands can suffer, causing the organization to lose its competitive edge and lose business.Don’t forget about leadership training and support. From a system-wide view, automation and new, state-of-the-art technology can impact the health of all aspects of the organization, including management. Leadership training and coaching for teams and individuals are important in face of the changes automation and technology brings. Leadership plays an important role in retaining talent and maintaining high employee engagement.   Through coaching and training staff on newly implemented technology, and by keeping them current on updates of existing software and industry trends, leaders positively impact the health of the organization.Cultivate a learning culture. There has been much talk about the importance of lifelong learning in the workplace. As an organization grows and changes with time and trends, so too must its strategic goals, mission, and people. An organization succeeds by having a learning culture that supports its goals by sharing knowledge and skills, easing transitions in roles and responsibilities, breaking down barriers between teams, and promoting a culture of trust and teamwork. These aspects help employees adapt to change and ultimately be more efficient and contribute to an organization’s success.

As a current student of Training and Development, I believe it is imperative, especially in the face of the changing landscape of the workplace and the workforce, that we remain cognizant of how technology is reshaping what we know, and how all these changes will affect organizations.

Planning for the changes that lie ahead will help all of us as TD professionals ensure we remain successful in the Digital Age.

New Community-Powered Curation Platform: Milq

New Community-Powered Curation Platform: Milq | research and analysis | Scoop.it

Excerpt from the review article by The New York Times:
"Social media users know the frustration: a deluge of videos, images and music clips flows through their news feeds all the time, some of it precious but mostly not.

The people behind Milq, a new website and app, say they have one solution: change the network.
Milq lets users organize songs, video clips and other bits of media around common themes, resulting in something like collaborative mixtapes.

By trying to tame the web’s chaos through communities of taste, Milq is entering a crowded field of websites and apps that are betting on the power of human “curation”.
Perhaps Milq’s closest competitor is Pinterest, but Milq sees that personal process and raises it with group curation.
To do this, Milq has come up with something like a new atomic particle of online media: the bead. Milq is set up as a permanent collection of topic pages, or beads, each containing media clips posted by users.

Milq is free to use, on the web or on iPhones. (An Android app is being developed, the founders said.) But the involvement of corporate sponsors and media outlets is crucial to its expansion.
Condé Nast is an early media partner, and has been exploring ways to incorporate beads on its magazines’ sites..."

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 6, 2014 6:19 PM

"Today, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Day, we’re announcing a preview of Classroom, a new, free tool in theGoogle Apps for Education suite. It helps teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and communicate with their classes with ease. Classroom is based on the principle that educational tools should be simple and easy to use, and is designed to give teachers more time to teach and students more time to learn.

With Classroom, you'll be able to:

  • Create and collect assignments: Classroom weaves together Google Docs, Drive and Gmail to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly. They can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback to individual students.
  • Improve class communications: Teachers can make announcements, ask questions and comment with students in real time—improving communication inside and outside of class.
  • Stay organized: Classroom automatically creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student. Students can easily see what’s due on their Assignments page."
