China Chases Renewable Energy as Coast Chokes on Air - China Real Time Report - WSJ

China Chases Renewable Energy as Coast Chokes on Air - China Real Time Report - WSJ | Renewable Energy | Scoop.it
New figures in China show the country adding clean, renewable electricity generation faster than it is expanding capacity of more polluting sources. But change can’t happen fast enough for residents in eastern China.
xuefei Wang's insight:

Now the country has to face the negative effect of high speed development even before it has enjoyed the fruits. People of China suffer from deseases caused by pollution while the system of medical insurance still cannot cover all of them. Not only the health care, the tradition coal-burning way to generate energy braught also society security problem, due to the terrible and deadly working condition in coal mines.
However, could renewable energy solve all the problem? Not exactly. "Hydropower showed particular growth, with 22 gigawatts in new capacity coming online during the period, roughly one-third of all new capacity over the period." Undoubtedly, hydropower is the most common and important renewable energy source of today's China. Yet more and more people and regions blamed the dams and reservoirs for the deterioration of reginal climate and agriculture conditions. At the same time, "rising wind and solar capacity contributed to a far smaller degree." There is still long way to go for China in the energy generating field.

EU urged to set 2030 renewable energy target by ministers

Ministers from Germany, France, Italy and five other countries call for new renewable energy target in addition to carbon goal
xuefei Wang's insight:

Here comes another environmental target which is directly related to renewable energy. Purchasing of the target will definitely help expend the renewable energy in Europe, but completion of target will need much more effort.

Compared to developped countries which have already been dependent on fossil fuels for long time, it may be easier to improve energy system or cut emission gas in developping countries. They must have some similar tragets or regulations too and not before long. It will never be too early to take action of environment protection.

Geoff Ellis's curator insight, March 28, 2014 8:50 AM

I disagree with a significant portion of this article. It is correct in suggesting that current technology is not at the stage where we can meet all our goals.

However, that technology is constantly being improved upon and will no doubt be at that stage. The capacity that we have now is significantly more advanced than the technology we had even 10 years ago. In another 10 years the technology will be exponentially greater.

Battery capacity will improve, photovoltaic cells will be more receptive.  We can't expect things to always materialize as we create the idea, but as we come up with new idea's, we develop the technology to make it a reality.
