Remotely Piloted Systems
This is media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program.  We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in the water.  Check out our weekly blog!

Air & Aquatic Robot Research Blog

Air & Aquatic Robot Research Blog | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
CSUCI's unmanned systems research team blog
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Welcome to our curation page for PIRatE Lab's "AARR" work to better integrate cheap robotic technology into coastal monitoring and resource management.  Our consortium of faculty, professionals, and students are developing new tools to assess the health of our ecosystems and effectiveness of our management efforts in the coastal zone.  In addition of developing these instruments themselves, we are focused on developing and training the next generation of coastal scientists who will be professional, responsible  and adept users of these technologies.

Herein we collect a range of stories about:

- design, construction & operation of aerial & aquatic robots

- the future of unmanned & autonomous platforms

- examples of the application of these robots

- open source technologies

- the burgeoning maker space movement (a key tech driver)

- organizations supporting or promoting use of UAVs & ROVs

- efforts to professionalize Remotely Piloted Systems

- legal issues surrounding UAVs (aka drones)

- the wider impacts of UAV and ROV systems on our society

A few quick acronyms we often slip into:

AUV: Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

ROV: Remotely Operated Vehicle

RPS: Remotely Piloted Systems

UAS: Unmanned Aerial System

UAV: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (aka "drones")

ESRM: Environmental Science and Resource Management

CSUCI: California State Univeristy Channel Islands

This legislation was passed in response to public outcries about noise from aircraft being operated over National Parks. NPATMA required the FAA to issue an Air Tour Management Plan (ATMP) when whenever a person applies for authority to conduct a commercial air tour operation over the park where such a plan is not in effect." NPATMA instructs the FAA to issue said plan, or voluntary agreement, WITHIN 24 MONTHS. Currently the FAA has only done the following: Voluntary Agreements Currently, voluntary agreements are being pursued at the following national park units: Badlands

FAA Reauthorization Call To Action - before it's too late | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
The RC hobbyist has been abandoned and ultimately disenfranchised by a system and Federal Aviation Administration that has proven itself to be ineffectual in safely integrating UAS into the National Airspace System. Airmap, AMA, AUVSI, Amazon, DJI, Google, PrecisionHawk, et al. are apparently more interested in moving product and denying reality than in safeguarding the …

Drone Market Growth Incremental not Exponential According to Industry Report

Drone Market Growth Incremental not Exponential According to Industry Report | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
In an industry filled with as much excitement and promise as the drone space, it can be hard to separate they hype from the reality. Every year, Skylogic Research's annual report acts as a reality check for the hype merchants and chronic optimists with its accurate bottom-up assessment of the state of the industry. The 2018 Drone Market Sector Report by Skylogic Research LLC. indicates that the UAS space is maturing, but still finding its ground as fleet sizes remain small and most enterprise adoption only just getting started. Three quarters of businesses and public agencies report drone programs as young as two years old. That being said, professional use of drones is growing. Skylogic finds that almost three-quarters of all drones weighing over 250 grams are purchased for professional purposes—either governmental or business. This is up from last year. Smaller businesses are also seeing some growth in revenue with a three-point gain from 2017 to 2018, but small drone-based service
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Not surprising.  All those estimates of insane growth in the industry for the previous many years were just crazy.

FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 Passes with New Provisions for Drones

FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 Passes with New Provisions for Drones | Remotely Piloted Systems | Scoop.it
Yesterday, the Senate passed the highly anticipated FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 with an overwhelming majority. A large portion of the bill covered small UAS flights within the National Airspace System (NAS) and some major changes were included. The Section 336 protection, which prevented the FAA from regulating model aircraft was repealed, closing the hobbyist loophole. The FAA has stated in the past that Section 336 presented a roadblock in its plans to have every drone adopt a universal remote ID system. Now with its removal, recreational users must register their drone and pass an Aeronautical Knowledge Test. This was seen as necessary as step towards building a Universal Traffic Management system where both drones and traditional aircraft can be tracked effectively. The FAA has been mandated to create another pilot program, this time for Counter-UAS technology and accurate incident reporting. Law enforcement will soon be enabled to report on illegal drone use by inputting
