There are some important things to note here.  The most important being not how large or populated a database or job board is with qualified candidates but whether or not you can extract the data.  Sometimes this requires solid Boolean search strings.  So when considering an investment make sure you you understand the data depth and search-ability in order to yield the highest results.

Gallup reports employee engagement at 32% as an improvement, best since 2000!  Perhaps if organization leaders put more effort into reflecting on, communicating effectively and actually living the values they espouse.  People want to know that they are involved in something greater than themselves.  Corporate values, properly followed, lays the foundation for healthy cultures and higher performance.

Values are always more valuable when they are lived rather than relegated to a shelf for display.  Too many companies values are on shelves only.

Next phase for Recruiting Sales Executives.  Every company has a video these days whether it includes just images, real people or cartoon characters.  There are two reasons why I find this critical in my Recruiting Strategy; one is to make sure that the video reflects what the company does, it's culture and what it's like to work at Red Payments.  The other is this constant investment in getting the name out there to increase Brand Awareness to make my job easier.

Jason Alba on his blog raised the question of whether LinkedIn was nothing more than Job Board 2.0 - perhaps picking up a little from where Monster and Careebuilder left off.

 

Here is the comment I posted on his blog:

 

Here’s my perspective as a executive recruiter, speaker, author on the subject of hiring, and social networking expert/trainer.

 

The job board concept of LinkedIn is mistaken. Their job board is no more effective than traditional job boards like Monster or Careerbuilder.

 

What is powerful is the foundation of their site – networking. It used to be “back in the day” when I was recruiting 25 years ago, 99% of all candidate placements came from a second to third level referral. Rarely would the first person contacted be the person who got the job.

 

My search work today is 10X more effective because I can leverage interactions and referrals on LinkedIn at scale that was unimaginable a few years ago.

 

LinkedIn leverages this concept for recruiters, sales professionals, and anyone else attempting to reach someone – connections allowing warm-to-hot referrals instead of cold calls.

 

Seeing LinkedIn as a job board is a waste of time. Not using LinkedIn as a networking tool is a waste of time.

 

Here’s where I see LinkedIn evolving:

 

It’s moving from simply a networking tool for connecting and gaining referrals to content publishing and engaging with your network through groups, status updates, great content, and questions/answers. The better LinkedIn does with this “engagement” and “content marketing” element, the more powerful the tool will become.

AND.......The answer "No".  I never thought so although it has Recruiting as one of it's solutions.  It is so much more than a job board and Recruiting has changed.  As a Recruiting Director on the corporate side with a HR Management background, I see Linkedin as a platform for building brand awareness.  Which, is extremely key in attracting talent.  Having the talent come to you  "what a concept".  It takes time and patience but the pay-offs are worth it.

T his popular new use of the word "disruptive" makes me giggle inside.  It no longer has the negative connotation but yet, has a positive one.  Imagine coming up with an idea that gets so much recognition it both makes people smile and others pissed off.  Two other companies that come to mind are Uber and Airbnb.  Personally, I think they're both great but rain paraders like Hilary Clinton want to take away from what I thought used to be a Capitalistic society.

Dealing with the “resume collectors”
I’ve also had some disappointing experiences. The recruiters I refer to as the “resume collectors.”
It’s obvious when a recruiter is simply adding your name to a stack of other resumes that are being submitted to a manager so that it appears as though the recruiter is working on filling the open position. They’re the ones who don’t ask many questions about your background and you rarely hear from them again.
As I mentioned in a prior post, recruiting is a role that requires excellent relationship-building and sales abilities. Great recruiters maintain relationships for years and many will work with the same professionals over the course of their careers.
Success will be difficult to reach without building these valuable relationships.

Building relationships with candidates over an extended period of time is smart recruiting.  If you just post and fill, you are not a "real" recruiter AT ALL.  That approach is reactionary.  Instead, building relationships is proactive recruiting and the way "real" recruiters get it done.  The candidate experience overall is an important one and needs to be nurtured.  It's almost similar to courting in some ways.

I think the best tip is #6.  You can really get a wealth of knowledge and insight to a persons character, interests and accomplishments from their social media presence.  Then run the information you've gathered through the algorithm in your brain that quantifies and qualifies whether the person fits the profile you are looking for.

I'm not sure employees should be paid to use social media if you're not a social media company like Hootsuite - however, I do think the Ryan Holmes is onto something special about leveraging social media for recruiting.


Most companies think using social media for recruiting is posting a paid advertisement on LinkedIn's job board. There are hundreds of tactics you can you use to drive referrals for potential employees through social media. Most companies have not begun to try these tactics.


Unfortunately, as the job market starts heating up, the companies who are leveraging social media to find, engage, and attract great talent will find themselves winning the "talent wars" at your expense.
