'Where's My Sandwich'

Rhea Rene O'Donnell's insight:

Week 1: Introduction to Unit: Tropfest Jr and Shot Types

In this week’s introductory lecture we further explored the concept of media arts, looking in particular at Tropfest, Trop Jr which is a “short film making competition and a free, outdoor festival for kids aged 15 years and younger” (Australian Children’s Television Foundation, 2014).  We were shown one finalist entry from 2013, ‘Where’s my Sandwich?’ by Harri Gilbert. I was completely blown away with the professionalism of this film and astonished that it had been directed and produced by none other than Harri himself, who by the way was in Yr. 10 at the time of completion.

As a pre-service teacher (primary or secondary), filmmaking is essential to utilise within the classroom, as short films allow students to make emotional connections between key curriculum concepts.  Filmmaking also highly encourages collaboration and it has been suggested, “collaborative filmmaking is conducive to, and instructive in, a collaborative approach to learning” (Anderson & Jefferson, 2009, p.98).  What better way to test this theory by creating our own short film based on the stimulus of ‘Fly’.

However, before we could start the pre-production process, it was important that we understood the basic shot types and they include:

-       Close up

-       Medium

-       Wide / long

-       Cut away

Some examples of these shot types are; setting (extreme long shot, medium close up, long shot, extreme close up), interactions and relationships (medium shot, medium long shot), focus (cut in) and intimacy / reaction / emotions (close up).
