In which language do polyglots think?

DTLLS tutor's insight:
Interesting question... For me it depends very much on what I am thinking about. So I would say: in the language appropriate for the topic. We've just moved back to the Netherlands after more than 16 years in the UK. I became a teacher trainer in the UK and when I'm in a school or talk about education I think in English. My vocabulary is English is so much wider in this area, as it is not something I have spoken about as much in Dutch. Although Dutch is my native language.

I've applied for a job in a Dutch school and am sure that this situation will change soon, once I am in a Dutch teaching environment and add Dutch vocabulary related to education. So, I'm sure that soon I will switch languages when thinking about education. So the answer to this question will remain the same: the language most relevant for the situation. I won't think in Dutch when speaking with Spanish friends.

Occasionally when I'm stuck for words I might have to go through all 3 languages to find the right word. When I was teaching Spanish in England, I sometimes had to go through Dutch to find the translation, but usually would go from English to Spanish or vise versa, without a problem.

DTLLS tutor's insight:
This makes so much sense! I'm some sort of triangle/star too. The first time I came back "home" I definitely was a triangle. After more living abroad and more experiences, I'm now more of a star and feel so much more at home again in my own country. Stars are closer to circles than triangles ;-)
