A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan | Red Hot Reads | Scoop.it

Marcel Proust and The Sopranos serve as the unlikely inspirations for this ambitious study of time and relationships, writes Sarah Churchwell.  Egan has said that the organising principle of A Visit from the Goon Squad is discontinuity; this may be true, but the reason the book works so well is because of the continuities she has also created: her atomised people collide, scatter and recombine in patterns that are less chaotic than they appear. Egan's characters, and the America they inhabit, are winding entropically down. It's a kind of meditation on the butterfly effect, in which recurrence becomes the measure of the chaos of our lives, the novel reimagined as a series of chain reactions. But Egan's vision of history and time is also decidedly, and perhaps reassuringly, cyclical: the impacts these characters have upon each other are engineered not by coincidence but by connectedness itself, as the people we bump against and bang into become the story of our lives.

The Names they Gave Us by Emery Lord

The Names they Gave Us by Emery Lord | Red Hot Reads | Scoop.it
Bloomsbury, 2017. ISBN 9781408877814 (Age: 14+) Recommended.
Smithfield SHS Resource Centre's insight:
A coming of age story about summer camp and girlhood - a high school senior and bible camp graduate becomes a counsellor at a camp for young disadvantaged children. When Lucy Hansson's mother's cancer returns despite all of Lucy's prayers and bargains with God, she begins to act out in response to her faltering faith. Her equally devout boyfriend, Lucas, dumps her. Her mother wants to spare Lucy the worst of her cancer treatment and asks her to work at the summer camp she herself attended as a troubled teen. At camp Daybreak Lucy sees how the less fortunate live and becomes protective of her young charges. The extraordinary camaraderie between counsellors is a bonus. At camp, Lucy learns about her mother's past and she falls for Jones. Henry Jones not only shares her love of music, but unlike her ex-boyfriend Lucas, he can truly connect with her emotionally. The summer lurches from one drama to another as the minor characters are fleshed out through a gambit of themes - child abuse, bullying, intolerance, anxiety, death, teenage pregnancy and more. Daybreak distracts Lucy from the tragedy unfolding in her own perfect Christian family - but ironically exposes their dark secrets. Through this unforgettable narrative, Lucy stays true to her identity but develops a newfound understanding of both human frailty and boundless spirit. Readers will soar and cry with Lucy and her fellow counsellors. Perhaps some will even feel inspired to search for happiness, not in self-absorption but in the service of others. SPELLBOUND by Maree Coote

SPELLBOUND by Maree Coote | Red Hot Reads | Scoop.it

In a two-page preface, Coote notes that the advent of the Apple Macintosh computer in the 1980s gave graphic designers access to a multitude of typefaces and the ability to freely manipulate letterforms to create “a kind of alphabetical sculpture, or pictorial anagram.” She defines her three rules for letter art by skill level. Beginners should use letters any way they choose; more-advanced practitioners should “use only the letters found in the correct spelling of the name” of their subject; and “Designers” should “use only the correct spelling and only one font per letter.” The book is divided into three sections: “Architext,” depicting architecture and famous monuments; “Alphabeasts,” showing a range of animals, complete with instructions and puzzles; and “Letterheads,” with instructions on how to portray facial features using letters along with skillful depictions of historical characters, artists, and showbiz personalities. (Frida Kahlo’s face lends itself well to this type of portrayal.) The visual puzzles are amusing and intriguing, but the text is written in a juvenile, "how to do it" mode, implying a level of practical potential that will ultimately disappoint many kids who would like to create these types of images, as most are unlikely to have the skills or technical resources required. As an album of the art form, impressive; as instruction in it, less so. (Nonfiction. 8-14)

There are letters everywhere.

The Upside of Unrequited - Becky Albertalli

The Upside of Unrequited - Becky Albertalli | Red Hot Reads | Scoop.it

Penguin Books, 2017. ISBN 9780141356112 (Age: 14+) Recommended. Non-identical twins who couldn't be more unalike will ultimately grow apart - as all siblings must when their adult worlds expand. That's basically the gist of this readable romance in a nutshell. However arriving at this painful realization is not without some angst and laughter. Albertalli describes a variety of modern relationships and teaches us that friendship is the foundation of love, not physical attraction.

Molly is a late bloomer by comparison to her outgoing twin. Cassie is blonde, green-eyed, willowy . . . and gay.

Whereas our narrator is a brown-eyed, chubby brunette who has never kissed a boy despite having an inordinate number of unrequited crushes on the opposite sex. Living with an anxiety disorder is no fun and Molly's stream of consciousness supplies heaps of insights. When Cassie meets Mina, Molly is positioned to 'hook up' with one of Mina's friends, Will. He's attractive and it makes sense to get closer to him in order not to lose Cassie completely, given he is Mina's best friend. But Molly's summer job means she is spending a lot of time with Reid, who, actually seems to be attracted to her - for a change. Who will she choose?

Cousins and friends extend the teenage worlds of both sisters but their own nuclear family consists of a baby brother, Xavier and two Jewish mothers - Patty and Nadine. When the same-sex marriage law is passed, Patty and Nadine announce their intention to marry as soon as possible. Crafty Molly is asked to take charge of the decorations. The upcoming nuptials heighten tensions between the sisters, who are both grappling with their first serious relationship. Will there be happy endings for everyone? Readers will delight in Albertalli's clever dialogue and text messages to track the complexities of both love and friendship in this cosmopolitan family. by Deborah Robins
