Nirvana-About A Girl (lyrics)

I'm not a huge Nirvana fan but I do love this song. I think it relates to Gatsby's (James Gatz) life the most out of all the characters. When I looked at the lyrics to "About a Girl" it was mostly discussing how the man who they are talking about wants to see and meet with this girl but she doesn't understand how much he really likes her. Some quotes that indicate that he likes her more than she likes him is that he says "hope you have the time" and "but I can't see you every night. Free." That line especially can be directly correlated to Gatsby's life because he wants to see Daisy every moment he can but he can't because of her marriage with Tom. Gatsby longs for  Daisy like Kurt Cobain sings about longing for whatever woman he is singing about. The lyrics in this song that are most confusing are "I'll take advantage while you hang me out to dry." I think it means that the singer wants to go see and meet with another girl while this girl that he is longing for is not interested in him. That lyric would be more correlated with Tom than with Gatsby. I also like the lyric "but do you have a clue" because I feel like Kurt Cobain is meaning that this woman doesn't have a clue as to how obsessed he is with her. Which is something Gatsby could say. I don't think Daisy understands how drastically in love Gatsby is with her. Maybe not for her beauty and poise but for her money and status.

My response to this article is that first off, Nirvana is one of the main cornerstones for rock and roll in the 2000’, sorry Matt, but I’m going to have to disagree with you there. Second off, I would like to congratulate Matt on a very well written piece. Third off, I would have to agree that with Matt on the fact that this song really does describe Gatsby. Another lyric Kurt Cobain consistently uses in his song about this girl, is the lyric “I need…” I feel like the repetition of that lyric is the strongest part of that song and the part that really described Gatsby. This describes Gatsby well because when we read the book it almost seems like he is just a little off. The way I viewed it is that there was something missing in his life. Later we find out that the thing that was missing was Daisy. He wanted her, and even more than that, he needed her. That is why this song suits Gatsby so well, is because Kurt Cobain is begging for a girl to fill this void that he has in his life, and Gatsby is doing the exact same thing.
