CHAMPION PROFILE - SOREN PEARSON & MAHARISHI UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT RECREATION CENTER

CHAMPION PROFILE - SOREN PEARSON & MAHARISHI UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT RECREATION CENTER | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

Maharishi University of Management has long history of championing healthy and sustainable lifestyles on its campus, and their recreation center recently partnered with Recycleballs to improve upon their recycling efforts at their tennis courts.

Soren Pearson is the Co-Manager at the MUM Recreation Center, which is a multi-use athletic center featuring tennis, basketball, rock climbing and many other activities.
At the Eyre Tennis Center (named after long-time coach, Lawrence Eyre -pictured below), Soren tells us they used to have just one unmarked barrel on a single tennis court, so only a few players knew about it. “Now, everyone knows that recycling is available to them as we have Recycleballs bins on every court (a key component of our QuickShip program!). We are happy to be a part of the RecycleBalls family!"

CHAMPION PROFILE - SETH HARRIS AND DOANE UNIVERSITY

CHAMPION PROFILE - SETH HARRIS AND DOANE UNIVERSITY | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

Seth Harris is in his second year coaching Men’s and Women’s Tennis at Doane University, which plays in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. His players are gearing up for their Spring season, and it looks like they’re also excited about partnering with Recycleballs (as evidenced by the above picture!).

Seth thinks partnering with a program like Recycleballs could not only attract new recruits to play tennis at Doane University, but also attract first-time and long time tennis players in their surrounding community.

Seth played tennis at Central College in Iowa, and then went on to enter the world of teaching and coaching tennis, with prior stints at Wakonda Country Club, the Ames Racquet and Fitness Club, and Iowa State University. At Doane, he loves how much his players are bonding. He says, "While half of the team is from Nebraska, and the other half are 'non-natives,' they’ve all come together to improve their game, and in the process they’ve formed great friendships (one player even had the opportunity to crash at a teammate's house in Spain last summer!)."

We’re really excited to be partnered with Seth and Doane University Tennis, and wish them the best of luck this season!

CHAMPION PROFILE - LORI BURDELL AND THE HENRY L MCMULLEN TENNIS COMPLEX

CHAMPION PROFILE - LORI BURDELL AND THE HENRY L MCMULLEN TENNIS COMPLEX | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

Lori Burdell is the Recreation Programmer at Henry L McMullen Tennis Complex, a public facility of City of Clearwater Government, which local players call one of the nicest tennis centers in the area. Lori says, “Clearwater is big on recycling, with donation containers all over, especially at the McMullen Tennis Complex. Our great tennis community welcomes programs just like Recycleballs!”

Lori played tennis for most of her life (she was the first female tennis player to receive a full scholarship at West Virginia University). She is a certified USPTA Professional of over 25 years, a racquet tester for Tennis Magazine, and was the coach the Women’s Tennis Team at the University of Central Florida for three years.

It sounds like she's found a great home at Henry L McMullen, which was "the proud recipient of the USTA Large Facility Award Winner for 2016,” boasts 15 courts, and hosts ladies leagues, USTA Men, Women and Mixed Combo Leagues, meetup groups, USTA Jr Team Tennis, and Sr. Mixers and Tournaments.

Lori and her members are all "extremely excited to be a part of a cutting edge program that saves the planet!” It’s great to see players and members of a tennis community doing their part to help the environment and improve awesome public facilities like Henry L. McMullen. Thank you!

CHAMPION PROFILE - SCOTT FICKS AND MOORLAND TENNIS & PICKLEBALL

CHAMPION PROFILE - SCOTT FICKS AND MOORLAND TENNIS & PICKLEBALL | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

Scott Ficks is one of our newest Quickship Partners. He’s been the director of Moorland Tennis and Pickleball Club in New Berlin, Wisconsin, for thirteen years, playing an integral role in the facility’s development and earning himself a nomination for facility manager of the year in 2017!

It makes sense that Scott’s vision for constant improvement would extend to environmental responsibility. Since signing up for our Quickship program two weeks ago, Scott has already placed a RecycleBalls bin on each of Moorland’s indoor courts and tells us, “Members are ecstatic about this new solution!”

It’s no easy feat for a “nothing but tennis” facility like Moorland to stay competitive with multi-use and multi-club operations, but Moorland continues to thrive through constant change and improvement. Under Scott’s leadership, they’ve stayed competitive by forming relationships with local high schools and colleges, hosting special events, making capital improvements to the facility, and growing their pickleball program at an incredible rate. Today, Moorland boasts over 700 members of all ages!

We’re extremely proud to work with partners like Scott and Moorland, who share our vision of constant and never ending improvement. Thanks so much - you guys rock!

RB CHAMPION PROFILE - DAN GREENBERG OF WILLIAMS COLLEGE

RB CHAMPION PROFILE - DAN GREENBERG OF WILLIAMS COLLEGE   | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it
One of our newest partners is Williams College! Dan Greenberg is the head coach of Men’s Tennis at Williams (where he also played in college), and has been coaching there since 2009. Since taking the helm, Dan has led Williams to an NCAA Championship and won Div. III Coach of the Year in 2013. We spoke to Dan about Williams Tennis and their dedication to going green.

The tennis courts at Williams College are used by a wide range of players - from the varsity and club tennis teams, to local high school and community members - so they go through a lot of balls. Dan mentioned that in the past, Williams did its best to recycle old tennis balls by donating them to schools and to the humane society for dogs, but with 23 courts in operation (18 hard courts and 5 clay) there were simply too many used balls to donate.
That’s when Dan heard about RecycleBalls through the folks at Bennington Tennis Center. He applied for our Quickship program, and since receiving their first 10-pack of bins, Williams has really hit the ground (or, courts) running! Dan says, "Players now feel much less guilty and much more green! It’s awesome to have an easy way to store ship and recycle all of our excess tennis balls!”

We are thrilled to have Williams college as a partner and confident that the rising tennis stars at Williams will embrace and champion this important green initiative!

CHAMPION PROFILE - ELIOT POTVIN AND RACKET & FITNESS CENTER

CHAMPION PROFILE - ELIOT POTVIN AND RACKET & FITNESS CENTER | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

The Racket & Fitness Center in Portland, Maine is the largest indoor racket facility north of Boston, and we’re super excited to have them as a Recycleballs partner! We met their Director of Tennis, Eliot Potvin, at the USTA New England conference last fall. Since signing up our QuickShip program, he has already sent us back over 5,000 balls!

Eliot tells us that The Racket and Fitness Center is the “Center of Maine tennis - a facility that focuses on serving long standing clients and growing the game through introducing youth and young adults.” They’re also big on being green. "We recycle on all 9 courts and all common areas, and we recently upgraded our exterior insulation as well as our lights (to energy efficient LED) throughout the entire playing area."
Keep up the great work, Eliot!

CHAMPION PROFILE - JOHANNA GUNDLACH AND THE NEW ORLEANS CITY PARK / PEPSI CENTER

CHAMPION PROFILE - JOHANNA GUNDLACH AND THE NEW ORLEANS CITY PARK / PEPSI CENTER | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

[Pictured:  Martin Alexander, Tennis Maintenance Attendant for the City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center. Martin plays a huge roll in the success of the tennis ball recycling program, and educates and encourages visitors to recycle their used tennis balls.]

City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center is one of our largest partners, and another great example of a public facility focused on offering premiere tennis courts while staying committed to sustainability! Johanna Gundlach, the Sustainabilty Coordinator for City Park tells us that the public reaction to seeing Recycleballs bins on their courts is one of enthusiasm and curiosity. “People actually get excited about recycling their tennis balls, rather than throwing them in the trash can. They want to know more about what they will be used for, and even stop by and drop off bags of used balls!”

Many consider Pepsi Tennis Center to be the Premiere Tennis Facility in New Orleans. It’s the biggest facility in Louisiana with 26 courts (16 hard / 10 clay), and home to hundreds of tennis players - from collegiate athletes (Loyola and Tulane both play there), to USTA players, to recreational players of all ages.  But size isn’t the only thing that sets City Park apart, players are drawn to City Park’s commitment to protecting the environment.

Johanna tells us, “New Orleans City Park is continuously working towards becoming a leader in sustainability in the New Orleans region by greening Park operations at every level and in every department. Example green efforts in New Orleans City Park include increasing access to recycling in all public use areas of the Park, identifying opportunities for energy savings through lighting and HVAC upgrades, sustainability education programs for City Park employees, and community-wide citizen science programs to inventory and better understand the Park's flora and fauna.”

Last year, Johanna and her colleagues went on a mission to find a way to recycle and reuse tennis balls and prevent them from ending up in a landfill, and when she learned about Recycleballs, she jumped on the opportunity to partner with another organization dedicated to making tennis a greener sport. Thanks, Johanna and City Park for your partnership and your outstanding green efforts!

CHAMPION PROFILE - JOE WANG AND THE ARMY NAVY COUNTRY CLUB

CHAMPION PROFILE - JOE WANG AND THE ARMY NAVY COUNTRY CLUB | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

We’re super excited to profile Joe Wang, the Assistant General Manager and Director of Tennis at the Army Navy Country Club (http://www.ancc.org/) in Arlington, Virginia. Since partnering up with us last summer, Joe has sent back over 6,000 tennis balls!

The Army Navy Country Club is no stranger to being environmentally conscious. In 2014, they were named USTA Green Facility of the Year (and also National Facility of the Year)! Joe tells us, “We installed LED lighting in our indoor facility which has reduced energy use by 50%, and our HydroCourt irrigation system reduced water consumption by 60%. We also have the only LEED Silver private country club Clubhouse in the the mid-Atlantic.” When Joe found out about Recycleballs, it was an instant no-brainer. “Recycleballs has made the process of shipping used tennis balls so efficient - I couldn't imagine an easier way to do this!”

Since Joe arrived at ANCC fifteen years ago, he’s grown the tennis staff to ten pros (six full time and 4 part time) serving a membership of roughly 2,000 resident member households, which is one of the most in the country. Joe says, “Our members have been completely behind the effort and are enthusiastic in participating. As a country club serving so many young families (many of whom are active duty military), the environment and serving and protecting the community is part of who we are as a club."
Way to go, guys!!

CHAMPION PROFILE - KELLIE WURTZMAN AND OLYMPIC INDOOR TENNIS

CHAMPION PROFILE - KELLIE WURTZMAN AND OLYMPIC INDOOR TENNIS | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

We’re thrilled to be partnered with Kellie Wurtzman and the Olympic Indoor Tennis Club in Columbus, Ohio! Kellie is the assistant manager at Olympic, which is a seasonal facility with 10 indoor (bubbled) courts. It’s incredibly popular in Columbus, with over 1,000 members!

Kellie tells us that Recycleballs has really helped Olympic manage the lifecycle of their tennis balls by offering a “final stage” for balls. Now, she and her colleagues can ensure that dead balls are tossed into RecycleBalls bins, while balls that still has some life are put in their practice carts.

While Olympic Indoor Tennis is over 40 years old, its focus on recycling is relatively new. Kellie and Michelle Jarrett (who manages Olympic) made it their mission last year to improve upon Olympic’s recycling practices. After finding out about RecycleBalls at the Tennis Industry Association Conference in Orlando, they were immediately inspired. Not only did they bring back the RecycleBalls Quickship program to Olympic, they also rolled out a recycling initiative for bottles and cans. Now, both bins sit side by side on their courts.

“Members have been really enthusiastic about this change," says Kellie, “and feel much better about the facility’s practices.” Her members were curious to know what happens to recycled tennis balls so Kellie tells us she created and put up an informational poster which describes the process.

We at Recycleballs love hearing about a tennis community’s passion for doing the right thing. This is how we envision tennis becoming a green sport!

CHAMPION PROFILE - KEN DEHART AND AVAC

CHAMPION PROFILE - KEN DEHART AND AVAC | RecycleBalls News | Scoop.it

We’re pleased to profile Ken Dehart ( Ken DeHart Tennis ) of the Almaden Valley Athletic Club! Ken has been involved in Tennis for 50 years and has had the opportunity to play and teach all over the world. He currently resides in San Jose, where he’s the Director of Player Development at AVAC and teaches tennis to players of all ages.
Ken is super excited to be a part of the RecycleBalls mission. He says, “Recycle Balls is a Grand Slam WINNER. Millions of tennis balls all across the world now have a home.”

Ken’s list of tennis accomplishments is extraordinary. He’s an International Master Professional with the PTR, a Master Professional in the USPTA, a USA High Performance Coach, and a member of Wilson's Premier Advisory Staff. He was also the first Executive Director for the Professional Tennis Registry, a 2 time PTR International Pro of the Year, and a 4 time USPTA Divisional Pro of the Year! …I’m out of breath!

With such a passion and drive for tennis, it’s no wonder why Ken has stepped up his game once again in his commitment to taking it green. Recently, we awarded Ken and AVAC with an award for hitting the 3,000 ball milestone. Ken said, ”I challenge all my tennis friends to a contest to see who can recycle the most balls by the end of August" "Recycleballs will be our accountant. As we reach each level they will send us our certificate for each level - let's go!”
You're on, Ken - we love that competetive spirit!
