Decomposition of waste carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites in molten potassium hydroxide

Recycling of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites has been investigated using molten potassium hydroxide as reaction media. The epoxy resin in composites was decomposed at temperatures ranged from 285 to 330 °C. The recovered carbon fibers were characterized by SEM, XPS and single fiber tensile test. More than 95% of the tensile strength of the virgin carbon fibers was retained. The surface C–OH decreased and COOH increased with increasing temperature. The decomposition products of epoxy resin in KOH was separated and analyzed by FTIR and MALDI-TOF. A possible mechanism for the decomposition of epoxy resin is proposed. The real-world CFRP wastes containing various contaminants such as thermoplastics, paints, sealants and glass fibers were also decomposed in the molten KOH

The decomposition of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is carried out at 623 K within 30 min using a co-solvent system comprising of ethanol and water. It has not previously been possible to carryout the decomposition of PEEK below 703 K in aqueous media. Decomposition is achieved using catalytic quantities of caesium carbonate (Cs2CO3), as low as 19 μmol ml−1, in a high pressure bomb reactor. Carbon fibres are separated from a PEEK/carbon fibre composite and analysed by SEM-EDX. A reaction scheme is proposed for the decomposition process, producing phenol and dibenzofuran as major products. Phenol is analysed quantitatively by means of HPLC, the identification of decomposition products is performed by GC–MS. Decomposition of PEEK at 7 K above its melt temperature using Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) solvents represents a significant advance in the recycling of end-of-life, contaminated and deteriorated thermoplastic composite materials.

Fin 2014, Canon a célébré les 25 ans de son programme de recyclage de cartouches de toner. Ce service, gratuit pour les clients de l’entreprise, s’étend désormais dans 24 pays dans le monde, dont 18 en Europe. On peut y accéder à cette adresse :http://www.canon.fr/recycling/

Lancé en 1990, il a permis de collecter 344 000 tonnes de cartouches de toner usagées, permettant ainsi d’économiser 232 000 tonnes de matières premières neuves et 502 000 tonnes de gaz à effet de serre. Ces chiffres concernent uniquement les cartouches Canon.

ABSTRACT

In this study, different milling methods were used to prepare fine fiberglass-resin powders (FRP) from waste printed circuit boards for the sake of obtaining high-performance polypropylene (PP)/FRP composite. The processability and appearance of composites can be greatly improved through further milling of FRP; smaller average particle size and narrower particle size distribution can be obtained by pan milling as compared with jet milling and planetary ball milling. Mechanical test results showed that fine FRP prepared by pan milling could be used as reinforcing fillers in the PP composites and possessed better mechanical properties than other two milling methods. The mechanical properties was also confirmed by scanning electron microscopy studies which indicated that the dispersion of FRP and interfacial adhesion between fiberglass and PP matrix was much better by pan milling. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous nucleation effect of FRP by pan milling was more obvious. The above results indicate that solid-state shear is a new method for producing fine FRP and high-performance PP composites filled with FRP. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Polyethylene recycling: Waste policy scenario analysis for the EU-27

Abstract

This paper quantifies the main impacts that the adoption of the best recycling practices together with a reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic bags and the adoption of a kerbside collection system could have on the 27 Member States of the EU. The main consequences in terms of employment, waste management costs, emissions and energy use have been quantified for two scenarios of polyethylene (PE) waste production and recycling. That is to say, a “business as usual scenario”, where the 2012 performances of PE waste production and recycling are extrapolated to 2020, is compared to a “best practice scenario”, where the best available recycling practices are modelled together with the possible adoption of the amended Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive related to the consumption of single-use plastic bags and the implementation of a kerbside collection system. The main results show that socio-economic and environmental benefits can be generated across the EU by the implementation of the best practice scenario. In particular, estimations show a possible reduction of 4.4 million tonnes of non-recycled PE waste, together with a reduction of around €90 million in waste management costs in 2020 for the best practice scenario versus the business as usual scenario. An additional 35,622 jobs are also expected to be created. In environmental terms, the quantity of CO2 equivalent emissions could be reduced by around 1.46 million tonnes and the net energy requirements are expected to increase by 16.5 million GJ as a consequence of the reduction in the energy produced from waste. The main analysis provided in this paper, together with the data and the model presented, can be useful to identify the possible costs and benefits that the implementation of PE waste policies and Directives could generate for the EU.

Abstract

The sharp increase of plastic wastes results in great social and environmental pressures, and recycling, as an effective way currently available to reduce the negative impacts of plastic wastes, represents one of the most dynamic areas in the plastics industry today. Froth flotation is a promising method to solve the key problem of recycling process, namely separation of plastic mixtures. This review surveys recent literature on plastics flotation, focusing on specific features compared to ores flotation, strategies, methods and principles, flotation equipments, and current challenges. In terms of separation methods, plastics flotation is divided into gamma flotation, adsorption of reagents, surface modification and physical regulation.

With increasing use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in transportation, sports, and many other industries, recycling of the scrap and end-of-life composites has presented both great challenges and opportunities. In this work, we report our study on reclaiming carbon fibers from CFRP using energy efficient microwave irradiation. Different irradiation conditions were used and the optimal conditions were determined based on the surface morphology of the recycled fiber. Polypropylene (PP) and Nylon, representing nonpolar and polar polymers, respectively, were reinforced using the recycled fiber through extrusion and injection molding. For comparison, PP and Nylon reinforced by virgin carbon fiber were also prepared using the same processing conditions. Tensile, flexural, and impact test results showed that, while both carbon fibers could improve these properties, they exhibited different reinforcing effects on the two polymers. The recycled fiber outperformed the virgin fiber in reinforcing PP whereas the virgin fiber performed better in Nylon. This was due to the differences in surface roughness, surface bonding, and fiber aspect ratio between the two fibers. Food wastes are produced by a variety of sources, ranging from agricultural operations to household consumption. About 38% occurs during food processing. At present, the European Union legislation encourages the exploitation of co-products. This valorisation can be achieved through the extraction of high-value components such as proteins, polysaccharides, fibres, flavour compounds, and phytochemicals, which can be re-used as nutritionally and pharmacologically functional ingredients. Extraction can proceed according to solid-liquid extraction, Soxhlet extraction, pressurized fluid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pulsed electric field extraction, and enzyme-assisted extraction. Nevertheless, these techniques cannot be used indiscriminately and their choice depends on the type of biomolecules and matrix, the scale processing (laboratory or industrial), the ratio between production costs and economic values of the compounds to be extracted. The vegetable wastes include trimmings, peelings, stems, seeds, shells, bran, residues remaining after extraction of oil, starch, sugar, and juice. The animal-derived wastes include wastes from bred animals, wastes from seafood, wastes from dairy processing. The recovered biomolecules and by-products can be used to produce functional foods or as adjuvants in food processing or in medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations. This work is an overview of the type and amounts of food wastes; food waste legislation; conventional and novel techniques suitable for extracting biomolecules; food, medicinal and pharmaceutical uses of the recovered biomolecules and by-products, and future trends in these areas.

Current status of recycling of fibre reinforced polymers: Review of technologies, reuse and resulting properties

A complete review of the different techniques that have been developed to recycle fibre reinforced polymers is presented. The review also focuses on the reuse of valuable products recovered by different techniques, in particular the way that fibres have been reincorporated into new materials or applications and the main technological issues encountered. Recycled glass fibres can replace small amounts of virgin fibres in products but not at high enough concentrations to make their recycling economically and environmentally viable, if for example, thermolysis or solvolysis is used. Reclaimed carbon fibres from high-technology applications cannot be reincorporated in the same applications from which they were recovered, so new appropriate applications have to be developed in order to reuse the fibres. Materials incorporating recycled fibres exhibit specific mechanical properties because of the particular characteristics imparted by the fibres. The development of specific standards is therefore necessary, as well as efforts in the development of solutions that enable reusers to benefit from their reinforcement potential. The recovery and reuse of valuable products from resins are also considered, but also the development of recyclable thermoset resins. Finally, the economic and environmental aspects of recycling composite materials, based on Life Cycle Assessment, are discussed.

Abstract

The treatment and disposal of tyres from vehicles has long been of considerable environmental importance. The main problem lies in the mixed composition of the tyres. Studies have been undertaken to modify the structure of the tyres, especially with reference to the percentage of granulated rubber incorporated, in order to improve their performance, and also to reduce their environmental impact during normal functioning (noise, particulates, etc.) and facilitate recycling and final disposal. The aim of the present study is to review and compare how used tyres are treated and disposed of in two different EU countries. The first is Italy, which has been part of the European Union since its inception, and has important industrial traditions. The second is Romania, an emerging country which recently became part of the EU, and whose economic and industrial development has had a major boost in recent years, with a strong growth in waste production, together with consumption in urban areas.

The occasion was useful to consider the situation concerning the evolution of the different aspects related to the management of the end-of-life tyres. In particular, the paper considers the properties of tyre waste and their potential reuse, the enhancement of end-of-life tires and the various types of recovery, such as the reconstruction of tyres and the material recovery. The aspects related to the energy recovery and the use of the life cycle analysis, as a tool to support the choices of the best management system, were also taken into consideration, not forgetting that an adequate end-of-life planning is important when developing a sustainable product, since it can affect considerably its overall life cycle.
