In February 2014, the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care and UNC Health Care worked together during American Heart Month to spread the word about cardiovascular disease and the importance of a heart healthy lifestyle. They utilized multiple social media websites to share their heart-healthy messages.TwitterMore than 25 Twitter posts were sent out during American Heart Month, reaching over 435,600 users throughout the month of February. The posts included everything from UNC Heart & Vascular patient success stories, useful heart-health diet and exercise tips, fun Heart Month craft projects, and facts about heart disease and aneurysms. Check out these Twitter posts! FacebookMore than 15 Facebook posts were made on the UNC Health Care page and the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular page, garnering 81 likes and reaching almost 40,000 Facebook users. Facebook allowed us to include longer posts about heart disease and UNC Heart Heroes! Pinterest, Vine, and SlideShareThese three social media sites gave us great multi-media options. On Pinterest, UNC Health Care "pinned" photos and heart-healthy recipes. On Vine, we posted a stop-motion video of how to make an origami heart...using EKG paper from UNC Cardiac Services! On SlideShare, we were able to include the GO RED FOR WOMEN Slide Show. More than 20 divisions and departments throughout the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health Care stopped by the Photo Booth to show their support for women's heart health.

Sitting is sabotaging our health: Stand up for yourself

Sitting is sabotaging our health: Stand up for yourself | Real Estate | Scoop.it
"Sitting is the new smoking." That’s the buzz ricocheting around health circles, as a growing mountain of medical research decries our national addiction to sitting on our rear ends. As a health reporter, I’ve read the research, from the National Institutes of Health to the Mayo Clinic to the American Cancer Society, all of which warns that prolonged sitting leads to increased risks of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Not even regular exercise can undo the damage caused by such a sedentary lifestyle. That got me to wondering, did I have what some experts called “the sitting disease”?
