Blogs vs. Term Papers | Reading, Writing, Word study, and Content Literacy | Scoop.it
To raves and rants, blogging has become a requirement in everything from M.B.A. to literature courses. (Should educators exchange term papers for blogs as a way to teach writing in the digital age?

While I don't believe this is an "either/or" situation, I have started to use more digital productions as means of assessment.  Our students are consumers of digital information and to be prepared for the workforce of the future, they will need to have experience being producers of knowledge that can use digital formats to disseminate that information.

Baby doesn't need tech to learn

Baby doesn't need tech to learn | Reading, Writing, Word study, and Content Literacy | Scoop.it
Child developmental experts say that the new and disturbing trend of getting toddlers iPads to play with is likely to do more long term harm than good.

Another good cautionary tale that reminds us that technology in and of itself is not sound pedagogy.  Technology can strengthen teaching and learning methods but isn't the main goal.  I am a huge fan of technology within education, but there are limits as the image of this poor baby suggests.

12 Ways to Motivate Reluctant Readers

12 Ways to Motivate Reluctant Readers | Reading, Writing, Word study, and Content Literacy | Scoop.it

"Here are a dozen strategies to motivate reluctant readers, and none of them involves stickers, certificates, or pizza. External rewards may work in the short term, but if you really want students to love reading you have to look for other options. Since this is just a quick overview, you’ll notice that some strategies contain links to additional sources that you can explore later. On to the strategies..."

Universal Design for Learning Fosters Expert Learners

Universal Design for Learning Fosters Expert Learners | Reading, Writing, Word study, and Content Literacy | Scoop.it

Susan Goding, a School Board Director in Washington State writes why UDL is the lens they need to be looking through when thinking about improving student achievement.

"UDL is a framework, based in the cognitive neurosciences, for designing learning experiences that work across a wide spectrum of learners. Its main purpose is to make sure everybody is a successful learner and reaches what we call an expert learner. That is, they know a lot, they know how to do a lot, and the love learning and they want to do it more.

The key to Universal Design for Learning is that we are designing learning experiences which, from the beginning, are designed to be universal and to make sure everybody learns. And that design is primarily based on the power to be very flexible in allowing choices, in allowing different paths, in allowing for things to be presented in different ways. So that we reach those other two things, universal and everybody learns...”
