Just ask a kindergarten teacher what has changed with incoming children and they will unanimously say: They don't have the social skills they used to have. They struggle to listen and they need constant stimulation.

I provided my martial arts students sets of jacks and balls. My goal was to help them develop fine motor coordination. Not one child in the class - not the six year old nor the 14 year old was coordinated enough to "play jacks". Marbles, superballs, jacks, crayons, paper and scissors were at the foundation of our development of fine motor coordination, patience, self-entertainment. We've lost that aspect of youth development in most modern families.
