allen--the-inspired-writing-vs-the-real-writer.pdf

Cindy Tanory's insight:

The author of this paper really helped relieve me. She mentions how not every great writer has an easy time writing and that not every student will like to write. Although I do have a hard time starting any of my papers, I truly enjoy writing once I have the concept planned. I enjoy reading these articles from writingspaces.org because they have such helpful advice!

dasbender--critical-thinking.pdf

Cindy Tanory's insight:

I found it very beneficial to have chosen this article to read. The author, Gita DasBender, talks about the hard task of critical thinking in regards to reading assignments. DasBender explains that critical thinking isn't criticizing or disagreeing what you are reading, rather simply responding and evaluating the ideas. This paper provides helpful advice for staying engaged and critical thinking such as asking questions, listing the main ideas, writing a personal response, and possibly making an academic connection.

How to Overcome Rejection: An Author's Advice | WritersDigest.com

How to Overcome Rejection: An Author's Advice | WritersDigest.com | Reading and Writing | Scoop.it
Jessica Anya Blau, author of the novel, THE WONDER BREAD SUMMER (2013), explains techniques on how to overcome rejection & keep moving forward.
Cindy Tanory's insight:

This article introduces a novel written by Jessica Anya Blau, and mentions some of the tips she uses in her book for writing advice. I like how one of the tips kind of tied in with what we read for class this week about criticism. This author says that not everyone is going to be the biggest fan of your work, and it is better to know that rejection will always be a part of the writing life, than to be egotistical about it. She also mentions that we must learn how to be somewhat detached from our work, and that one someone questions or rejects the work you have created, they aren't questioning who you are.

stedman--annoying-ways.pdf

Cindy Tanory's insight:

This essay contained many helpful tips on how students can smoothly integrate quotations into their own work. The author, Stedman, used a lot of interesting anecdotes which help to explain what he was trying to say. I found this particular article interesting because I usually have a hard time including quotes into my papers without it sounding awkward. He mentions how there are conventions about quoting, but not necessarily rules. I also like how Stedman explained that you have to think about who is going to be reading your work and how they will judge it.

rafoth--why-visit-your-campus-writing-center.pdf

Cindy Tanory's insight:

The author of this paper, urges students to take advantage of their available writing centers, he offers some inspiring reasons why. The author offers advice from many students, which helps to validate his reasons. He mentions the idea of how writing is a conversation, and student tutors can help answer questions or even create some more that were probably overlooked in the writing. I enjoyed how this paper brought up a lot of discussions we have had in class, and the fact that we just have to start somewhere by taking notes and eventually the ideas will just start to flow. This has really encouraged me visit our writing center in order to try and make me a more confident writer.

Boat Packed With Migrants Sinks Near Sicily, Killing Scores

Boat Packed With Migrants Sinks Near Sicily, Killing Scores | Reading and Writing | Scoop.it
The deaths of at least 111 people again underscored the dangerous, desperate efforts by many in Africa and the Middle East to reach Europe.
Cindy Tanory's insight:

This was a tragic article to read. A boat with nearly 500 people escaping African poverty and war was about to reach a Sicilian island but to make their location known, they tried to send a signal. This innocent attempt at being found, ended up causing a fire on the boat resulting in about 100 deaths, with about half of the migrants missing. It is sad that these innocent people were trying to better their lives but ended up losing them, it was also startling to read that these accident wasn’t uncomment to the Italian Coast Guard.

hinton--so-youve-got-a-writing-assignment.pdf

Cindy Tanory's insight:

I found this essay to be particularly useful because of my upcoming English paper. It contained various tips on what to do when given a writing assignment. It first described that many students become completely overwhelmed as soon as their professors merely mention an upcoming paper, something that I can easily relate to. The author advises to make sure to read and fully understand the assignment sheet in order to comprehend what our purpose of writing is. This paper made me realize that I have to push the panic away, ask myself many questions on what the assignment requires, and figure out what my best approach is.
