UPDATE: Pimp C died from Sizzurp..... | Rappers glorifying codeine | Scoop.it
The L.A. County Coroner has determined that Pimp C's death was due to complications stemming from sleep apnea and an accidental overdose of prescibed...
Sherod Brown's insight:

February 2008, legendary Texas rapper Chad Butler, stage name Pimp-C dies from "sizzurp" overdose. A few years later rapper Lil Wayne admits his seizures was caused by "sizzurp". Just a few months ago rapper "Rich Homie Quan" was hospitalized or having seizures off of "sizzurp". But the chances of overdosage haven't stopped other rappers like Double P, who made it his lifestyle. People wake up in the morning and enjoy there first cigarette, rapper Double P wakes up with a double styrofoam to start his day off. Thats another thing "sizzurp" did, it even started a "double cup styrofoam" trend. Its so popular people who aren't even drinking the purple mud is still double cupping because they want to feel cool.

Pimp C is a prime example of why not to abuse the codeine filled cough syrup. Pimp C is an underground Hip-Hop artist from Texas and about a few years back he was found dead in his hotel room. His counterpart name Bun B tried to spread the word to new Rap artist but no one seems to care. So taking it off the market is absolutely best way to handle the situation before more youth put them self’s in harms way trying to be like their favorite Rappers.

Sherod Brown's insight:

Legendary southern hip hop group 36 Mafia released a hit single name "sipping on some syrup". It featured popular Houston rap legends UGK (Bun-B and Pimp-C), the whole song was based around abusing the drug "sizzurp" which was a nationwide hit single. This was one of the beginning stages of the popular drug epidemic circulating around rap music, especially southern rap music.

Back in about 2000 one of the first rappers talking about sipping syrup was Three 6 Mafia. Juicy J one of the members of the group still make songs till this day and have yet to share his insight on the issue. I feel as if there are some rappers that care and some that just plain out don't.

DEA Cracks Down on Sizzurp: Hip Hop's Potent Prescription

DEA Cracks Down on Sizzurp: Hip Hop's Potent Prescription | Rappers glorifying codeine | Scoop.it
LOS ANGELES -- The DEA is cracking down on a highly addictive and potentially deadly drink known as "Sizzurp."
Sherod Brown's insight:

rappers glorifying "sizzurp", I chose this topic because i am a rapper, and I'm familiar with the drug and it has a big effect in the controversy   and bad reputation rappers get today, and recently TMZ announce on 4/23/2014 that it will be taking off the market because of the drug abuse reputation rappers built for the cough syrup. Its a very popular topic in the lyrics of rappers like lil wayne, soulja boy, mac miller, juicy j, wiz khalifa, kevin gates , rich homie quan the list goes on. The inventors of the cough syrup didn't make it for this purpose, and is taking it off the market. It is proven to be as dangerous as morphine, rapper pimp-c died from a "sizzurp" overdose back in 2008, Houston Texas artist DJ Screw overdose on "sizzurp" back in 2000.

The way Hip-Hop affects the masses is at an all time high, as if were the rap scene used to be about being positive and motivating people to make something of there selves but with the contentious music about drugs and money todays Hip-Hop scene does not realize how much it impacts the youth, and that’s why I believe it’s good that the DEA cracks down on Sizzurp other none as Prometh with codeine the cough syrup.

Chopped and screwed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chopped and screwed

Chopped and screwed (sometimes called screwed and chopped or slowed and throwed) refers to a technique of remixing hip hop music which developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the 1990s.

Sherod Brown's insight:

"Sizzurp" gained its fame and popularity in Houston, Texas. It wasn't just that "new drug" that whole the city going crazy, "sizzurp" started a  new wave of music called "chopped and screwed" which was invented by legendary Houston musical artist DJ Screw, who died in 2000 because of an overdosage of "sizzurp". The feeling that "sizzurp" gave people was a very slow reaction feeling, everything moved slow, it's the ultimate wavy feeling if you ask me. That is how "chopped and screwed music came about, its when you slow down the tempo of the song change the pitch of the rappers voice to a very deep pitch. It has such an big effect on rap music, critics rumored that rappers lil wayne couldn't make good music without in his system.

The chopped and screwed music scene is very prevalent in the south where a lot of the talk of syrup originated from. Me myself I'm a fan of the music but then again I'm not a impressionable young teen either, So it's easy for me to know what could harm me if not now then in the long run.

What's 'sizzurp'? A dangerous way for kids to get high

What's 'sizzurp'? A dangerous way for kids to get high | Rappers glorifying codeine | Scoop.it
Attention, parents: Young people are using a drink with a funny-sounding name — “sizzurp” — to get high, and the consequences are...
Sherod Brown's insight:

I chose this article because it reflects on the younger culture in America, and this is the biggest group of people that music affects, and if there favorite rappers are rapping about "sizzurp" its important to show an example of the effect. You know like I know rap music is very influential, its a "monkey see, monkey do" organization. Rappers are portrayed as super human figures to the average everyday high school kid who goes to school in a urban culture type of environment. What is being played in these high school urban culture environment? Rich Homie Quan, A$AP Rocky, Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Juicy J, etc. What do al these rapers have in common, they all glorify "sizzurp". Codeine Promethazine is getting so easy to access, high schoolers can access it, believe me I was able to get my hands on it way more than a few times back 2010. High school kids are not just using the modern day "gateway drug" aka marijuana, they already on the drugs that marijuana could potentially lead you too, and "sizzurp" is one of those drugs. Why is the drug so popular in the urban high school culture, because thats the main drug there favorite rappers are rapping about.

Kids today talk about the drug as if it's cool to be a drug user. And peer pressure their impressionable friends into joining them into the risky habit. I think it's good that it's getting the national attention it's received and hopefully the parents will start to get involved with it and stop their kids from being brainwashed and get back to doing kid like things.
