Why should we use programmatic advertising in Radio ? Radiodayseurope

Why should we use programmatic advertising in Radio ? Radiodayseurope | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

You can personalise advertising – radio listeners hear customised ads. If you have data about your listeners – what they’re interested in – you can use that knowledge to target advertising to them specifically.

Storytelling. Using other media; if you know someone heard your ad, when they go to a newspaper site, you can advertise there too. Create a story about your brand with technology, analyse post listen visits – track the customer journey.

Have the ability to see if someone goes to a website/buys product after hearing a radio commercial, and find out what works, and what doesn’t!

Keep advertising concise and relevant - greater efficiency and use of resources.

Add ‘local magic’, utilising the unique differences and dynamics of each region.

Develop a pricing strategy - the more data you have about your listeners, the more valuable they become.

'Traditional Radio' Is Now a Billion Dollar Digital Business - Digital Music News

'Traditional Radio' Is Now a Billion Dollar Digital Business - Digital Music News | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it

The Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) has released a new report stating that radio revenue from digital platforms have hit an all-time high, topping $1 billion for the first time ever.  Off-air sales also grew 11% over the previous year, and now exceed the $2 billion mark.

With these new milestones being reached, 2015 proved to be a solid year for radio.

But what’s really driving traditional radio’s revenue increase?

Erica Farber, president and CEO of the Radio Advertising Bureau, says the reason for this is the fact that “more and more advertisers are extending the unmatched reach of broadcast radio by taking advantage of radio’s off-air and digital options.”  Farber goes on to say that, “by using radio stations’ digital and off-air platforms, advertisers are extending the scope and reach of their messaging.”

The question is whether ‘traditional’ radio can parlay its incumbent success into trickier, online platforms.  According to RAB, ‘digital’ includes a broad range of assets, including “banner ads, tile ads, pop-up ads, takeovers, internet/web streaming and dedicated streaming advertising,” among a long list of other possibilities.

Spotify is using 50,000 anonymous hipsters to find your next favorite song

Spotify is using 50,000 anonymous hipsters to find your next favorite song | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
As with most music recommendations from Spotify, it’s a method that blends human curation (the music blogs, the preferences of the early adopters) with Big Data algorithms. And it’s at the opposite end of the spectrum from Discover Weekly in that Fresh Finds is a playlist that every Spotify user has in common.
Whitman said he wants Fresh Finds to be “a feeder for the rest of the Spotify ecosystem,” with songs eventually making their way to a more mainstream audience.

The company also has high hopes that Fresh Finds will be a boon to undiscovered artists: Some bands have landed on the playlist after being played only 10 times on the platform. At least one band, the TK Muna, was signed to a major label (RCA) after it was included in Fresh Finds.
It’s not hard to imagine a future when Spotify uses its giant database and clever algorithms to find up-and-coming bands for a music label of its own, much as Netflix produces its own content based on Big Data insights into its users’ tastes and preferences. When asked if this was in the cards for Spotify, which is partially owned by major music labels, Whitman politely declined to comment.

Quick Take: BBC Music App... pushing Streaming towards mainstream

Quick Take: BBC Music App... pushing Streaming towards mainstream | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
The BBC has launched a music app called, well, BBC Music. Available only in the UK, this native music app is one step on a well considered path for the BBC as it tries to carve out a role for itself in streaming era. The app is squarely focused on music discovery and the sign on process (which requires a BBC iD log in – a first) takes the user through a series of taste preferences including genres, playlists and DJs. But to really unlock the power of the app it needs to be used in conjunction with Spotify, Deezer or YouTube. And therein lies the BBC’s challenge: across all of its traditional platforms the BBC is both discovery and consumption, but on streaming it has had to (due to licensing constraints) drive an arbitrary wedge between the two.

David Greenberg, a trained jazz saxophonist, says the research could have implications for the music industry. “A lot of money is put into algorithms to choose what music you may want to listen to, for example on Spotify and Apple Music. By knowing an individual’s thinking style, such services might in future be able to fine tune their music recommendations to an individual.”

Dr Jason Rentfrow, the senior author on the study says: “This line of research highlights how music is a mirror of the self. Music is an expression of who we are emotionally, socially, and cognitively.”

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, a member of the team, added; “This new study is a fascinating extension to the ’empathizing-systemizing’ theory of psychological individual differences. It took a talented PhD student and musician to even think to pose this question. The research may help us understand those at the extremes, such as people with autism, who are strong systemizers.”
