Thanks to streaming, Americans are listening to more music than ever before | Business Insider | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Total music listening hours have increased during the past few years
Streaming music subscribers listen to 4 hours more per week than non-streamers
Between smartphones, tablets, smart speakers, and laptops people can listen to music at any time of the day from anywhere they'd like. Nielsen's Music 360 Report, charted here by Statista, found that all of this easy access has increased the amount of time Americans spend listening to music by quite a bit in only one year. People who subscribe to music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have even more music at their fingertips, and as we can see, they spend almost four more hours jamming out than non-subscribers. Streaming technology is also helping traditional radio station stay relevant – the report found that 72% of online music streamers also listen to some form of radio.

Culture, humour, reportages…

Voice-enabled smart speakers to reach 55% of U.S. households by 2022, says report

Voice-enabled smart speakers to reach 55% of U.S. households by 2022, says report | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Adoption of voice-powered smart speakers is taking off. According to a new report from Juniper Research out this morning, smart devices like the Amazon Echo, Google Home and Sonos One will be installed in a majority – that is, 55 percent – of U.S. households by the year 2022. By that time, over 70 million households will have at least one of these smart speakers in their home, and the total number of installed devices will top 175 million.

The new forecast follows other reports pointing to growth in the voice-enabled speaker market, including one from eMarketer this spring which said that 35.6 million U.S. consumers would use a voice-activated device at least once per month in 2017, representing 128.9 percent growth over last year.

Despite the increased adoption of smart speakers with voice control capabilities, the new report points out that the majority of voice assistant usage won’t be through these in-home devices. Instead, the most usage will occur on smartphones, with over 5 billion assistants installed on smartphones worldwide by 2022.

Google is making it easier to create 3D audio for VR

Google is making it easier to create 3D audio for VR | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
Google has announced an immersive audio software development kit called Resonance Audio. A tool that brings scalable performance for high-fidelity 3D sound in 360-degree video, VR, and AR, Resonance Audio is built to work on both mobile and desktop, and is compatible across a variety of platforms, from game engines like Unity to the web. It’s even available as a standalone VST plugin, meaning it can be used within multiple audio creation programs.

Delivering quality 3D audio in VR in the past has been a challenge because the audio is interactive — changing based on both the object’s movements and the movements of the user. It’s a burden on hardware and requires lots of on the fly rendering, but Google says Resonance Audio is lightweight enough to deliver high-fidelity 3D audio with VR even on your phone.

3D audio is an important factor in believability when it comes to feeling immersed in a virtual world. Think about how even a walk down your block presents hundreds of sounds that give you a sense of space: a bird chirping above your head, a car approaching, zooming by your side, and then trailing off in the distance, a crack coming from below when you step on a twig, the rustle of leaves around your legs as wind pushes them around. It would be pretty odd if all those noises came at you just from the right and left at ear level, wouldn’t it? That’s what 3D audio solves.

Hack the Radio, a French startup, aims to liberate podcasts by streaming audio from a chatbot

Hack the Radio, a French startup, aims to liberate podcasts by streaming audio from a chatbot | Radio 2.0 (En & Fr) | Scoop.it
People who subscribe to dozens of podcasts may forget that there is indeed a podcast learning curve. For people who’ve never listened to podcasts before, the technology may feel like enough of a hurdle to to induce them to skip them all together. Meanwhile, those who do subscribe to a lot of podcasts know how long that list of unheard episodes can get, coming to seem as unmanageable as an overflowing email inbox.

The French startup Hack the Radio tries to tackle both these problems. On the one hand, it hopes to make podcast listening less intimidating for newbies. (Sixty-one percent of French people have never listened to a podcast, according to research done for Audible earlier this year. The figure is similar in the United States, where 60 percent of people ages 12 and older have never listened to a podcast.) On the other hand, it aims to improve the listening experience for people who already consume podcasts.

Spotify's Branded Moments [video] The 'Authenticity' Of Music Meets Exclusive Engagement > Webinar #AudioMoment @IABFrance 21 nov 2018

Having afforded three major brands 100% share of voice for 30 minutes at a time, it will be interesting to see how Spotify measures return on that exclusive consumer exposure. The streaming music service is still in a beta test of its “vertical video experience” with Baccardi, Bose and Gatorade, according to Liberty Kelly, Head of Sales for the Americas.

In Spotify’s first trip to the Masters of Marketing Conference of the American Association of Advertisers, Kelly says in an interview with Beet.TV. that the key to the Branded Moments offerings is enabling listeners to mirror the “authenticity” of music.

“When we have 100 million active users connecting with over 30 million tracks against 2 billion playlists, that turns into something, and that something is a moment,” says Kelly.

One can easily imagine Gatorade sponsoring a 30-minute block of exercise-inducing tunes, or Baccardi if people select their favorite party accompaniment. Spotify wants brands to be there in those moments so they can “own this experience end to end,” Kelly explains. “You’ve never been able to do this before.”

The brand exposure encompasses an end cap, a vertical video and a mobile overlay for 30 minutes. “Anytime a listener press shuffle play, they’re going to be experiencing a relationship with that band. And that’s going to last 30 minutes, brought to you by Gatorade, or Bose, or Baccardi,” she says.

Asked how the return for the brands will be quantified at the end of the beta period, Kelly says Spotify is examining “what’s going to be the most effective way” to measure it. “We’re building in another layer of authenticity there. Unlike any other medium, it is a reflection of yourself,” Kelly says.

We interviewed her at the ANA Masters of Marketing annual meeting in Orlando. This video is part of a series produced at the conference. Beet's coverage is sponsored by Cadent. For more videos from the series, please visit this page.

If podcasts and radio move to smart speakers, who will be directing us what to listen to?
Plus: Pandora leans into podcasts, NPR has a leadership crisis, and Limetown and 30 for 30 plan returns.

Charla de Cóctel. Slate Podcasts is now bilingual. Last week, the network leveraged its hefty experience with conversational programming — which birthed the style known as the “gabfest” — to launch what it bills as its first-ever Spanish language product, El Gabfest en Español. The lineup includes León Krauze, the main anchor at Univision’s KMEX station in Los Angeles and the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Journalism at USC; Fernando Pizarro, a political reporter for Univision’s local TV stations; and Ariel Moutsatsos, the Washington bureau chief for Noticieros Televisa. (A fourth panelist will be added at a later date.) The podcast comes out of a collaboration with Univision Noticias, the Spanish-language American news source, but I’m told that Slate has full editorial control over the project. Paulina Velasco, who is based in Los Angeles, serves as the show’s producer.

When I asked the managing producer of Slate Podcasts, June Thomas, about the motivation behind the project, she systematically ticked off the drivers: demographic opportunity (“We know the stats about the growth of Spanish and bilingualism in America,” Thomas said: “37 million Latinos speak Spanish at home; the U.S. Latino population is set to reach 107 million by 2065, etc.”); a largely untapped market (“Everyone working on English-language podcasts worries about market saturation…There are a few U.S.-produced Spanish-language podcasts out there — Radio Ambulante is especially great — but the market is the opposite of saturated”); and Slate’s general intent to seek new audiences to bring into the fold.
