This is exactly what I believe that we should be encouraging. Students teaching/learning from other students. I believe we learn when we teach. Let's stop teaching them. Let's teach and learn together.

Harriette Knight's insight:

Love this short animation!

I've learned that my videos are too long. So I find myself struggling to create something meaningful in 3 minutes or less. Sometimes I'm more focused on keeping it short than on the content and creativity of the presentation. IATHS. It's about the Math, Stupid. (Me talking to Me).

This 36 second video features an animation done in one of the ipad whiteboard applications, Doceri. One simple idea is featured for 36 seconds.

It probably took a little time and skill to put this together, but possibly math educators will do better by breaking complicated content down into smaller and more understandable pieces. I refer to this as chunking.

Wait a minute! Is it possible that we can challenge our students to create short tutorials that are creative and engaging to their peers. After all they have placed the burden of engagement on us for decades. Let's turn the table.

Step One: Preparing Your Image To begin, open the Snagit Editor and create a new image. Make sure to create the image the same width as your video.

Harriette Knight's insight:

Sometimes you need a quick video that you can share with a class, student, or teacher. That's when I look to the recordable whiteboards on my ipad: Doceri, ScreenChomp, and ShowMe.

I am looking forward to using Snagit to help with videos that I would like to share with a larger audience, especially if I need diagrams or graphs.

I have used Snagit to snag images from my desktop to use in practice study and worksheets. Looking forward to finding it on my computer and using it to improve my mathcasts. Many thanks to Tim Fahlberg at TechSmith for exposing me to JING and Snagit.

Common Core test refusal - WNYT

Common Core test refusal - WNYT | Student and Teacher Created Mathcasts | Scoop.it
“Common Core test refusal WNYT However, until last year, her big brother Aven who loves math was always able to help when she got stumped. The new Common Core tutorials on YouTube often get them through the tears and the trying nights.”
Harriette Knight's insight:
Are parents who refuse to let their children take the Common Core Assessments setting a precedent that will encourage opting out of parts of the educational process that they don't like or understand? A parent in this article voices a concern that children are being treated as guinea pig. What is it about this reform that inspires so much outrage?

Third year of federally funded turnaround reform at Groves High begins in ... - Savannah Morning News

Third year of federally funded turnaround reform at Groves High begins in ...
Harriette Knight's insight:

Why is it that turnaround reform calls for getting rid of old leadership and 50% of old staff? After doing just that in this Georgia school, a $6M grant (over 3 years) was granted to new leadership and a partially new staff. Computer labs and academic technology were put in place with some of these funds? Not sure what the academic technology was. Hope that students were given the opportunity to use their creativity and produce their own tutorials in math using ipad recorded whiteboards or other tools for making tutorials.

mathcasts : Teaching Math with Technology

mathcasts : Teaching Math with Technology | Student and Teacher Created Mathcasts | Scoop.it

Via Monika Fischer-Keogh
Harriette Knight's insight:

There has been an explosion in the use of technology to produce short video tutorials.  I have found that the tools on the ipad are the easiest for me to use if I want to quickly express  myself and I am not looking to show off my film-making talents, which I don't have.

The real power in these tools is getting students to express their thinking while explaining a problem to the teacher or their peers. Most tools allow students to use a recordable whiteboard and then save and share content. The learning is in the teaching whether the teacher teaches or the student teaches.
