Ban Animal Tested Cosmetics in Australia

Ban Animal Tested Cosmetics in Australia | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it
Sara Keltie's insight:

Earlier this year the nation of Israel banned the marketing, import and sale of cosmetics tested on animals. This year the European Union will also introduce a ban on selling newly animal-tested cosmetics.

In Australia it is illegal to test cosmetic products on animals, yet we let other countries do it and then import those goods. This stance is both contradictory and hypocritical.

Recently the Minister for Health and Aging, Tanya Plibersek, has stated "To ensure consumer safety there is still currently a need to rely on animal testing".

This is a stance I vehemently oppose, as do other medical and animal rights based organsiation.

Humane Research Australia (a not for profit organisation that challenges the use of animals in research and promotes the use of more humane and scientifically-valid non animal methodologies) has joined forces with Animals Australia (Australia's foremost national animal protection organisation) and Choose Cruelty Free (an independent, non-profit organisation which actively promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle and encourages manufacturers and service providers to adopt a cruelty-free ethic) to make this petition available to those of us who seek a ban on selling newly animal-tested cosmetics.

Please take the time to sign and share this petition (simply click the image above to be taken to the link) and for greater impact email Ms Plibersek herself Tanya.Plibersek.MP@aph.gov.au

Should the rich be allowed to rent lion cubs for parties?

Should the rich be allowed to rent lion cubs for parties? | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

A $500,000 party was recently held to celebrate the opening of a new mega-dump for industrial waste in Western Sydney (WTF?). At the 600-guest party, amongst other attractions including fireworks, were two African lion cubs.

This completely inappropriate display of exotic animals was approved by the Animal Welfare division at the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

A party with 600 people, complete with fireworks, would be absolutely terrifying for a lion cub, however the department signed off on using the lion cubs in this way in direct contradiction with their own guidelines.

Current departmental guidelines for exhibiting animals identify unacceptable practices including “carrying or leading non-tame animals through crowds at venues such as sports events and shopping centres”and to avoid loud noises.

It has also been revealled that these cubs travelled all the way from a private zoo in Queensland just to entertain Mr Ian Malouf and his guests.

The Greens Party are calling for a ban on the exhibition of exotic and native animals at private parties, sporting events, shopping centres and fairs and they need your support.

Help stop this kind of cruel display. Send an email, via the address below, to the  Minister for Primary Industries, Ms. Katrina Hodgkinson, and ask her to act swiftly to amend the guidelines.

You can also contact Ian Malouf at Dial A Dump Industries, the man responsible for this disgrace of a party:

Shark experts petition Parliament over cull

Shark experts petition Parliament over cull | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

To lose a loved one as a result of a shark bite must be harrowing, yet the family members of the most recent shark bite victim in Australia have the understanding and respect for nature to request the Western Australian government call off what can only be described as a revenge fuelled killing spree. Premier Colin Barnett claims they only intend to kill the shark responsible for the death of George Wainwright, avoiding the fact the it is impossible to determine which shark that may have been. Under federal law the great white shark is protected as a result of its endengered status in Australian waters, yet the WA governnment are under the delussion they can ignore this status and revoke the measures put in place to protect their dwindling population.

Please read the article attached and contact those responsible for the intended slaughter to voice your outrage.

Elements 5: Letter to the government regarding shark fishing on the GBR | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

You would be forgiven for thinking that the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the fragile animals who thrive therein are protected by the Australian Government. Sadly that is far from the truth! Every year fishermen are allowed to extract 600 tonnes of shark from this supposedly protected habitat. However the Australian Government are currently accepting submissions from anyone and everyone regarding their suggestions for the future of this destructive and short-minded fishery. Whether you are an Australian or a potential tourist please read the material provided and follow the link to send your submission immediately, as they will only be accepted until Thursday October 21st. If you are an Ausie or not please consider voicing your concern over the killing of these sharks. As a fragile and vital marine ecosystem the GBR is important not only to citizens of Australia but to all citizens of the planet.

Wild elephant capture

Wild elephant capture | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

In a move that will tarnish both the reputation of a nation and the very religion of Buddhism, Sri Lankan Wildlife Minister, Mr S.M. Chandrasena has authorised the capture of "strong, young, wild elephant calves" to be 'donated' to Buddhist temples around the country.

Arahat Mahinda Thera, the monk who converted the country to Buddhism, a religion based on compassion, recorded as preaching to King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd Century BC that all animals have a right to live in the land wherever they may want.

Unfortunantly in modern day Sri Lanka captive elephants are beaten and starved into submittion during their life of servitude through a process known as phajan, translated to mean 'breaking the spirit'!

Ancient traditions from cultures all over the world are being reassessed with our modern understanding of ethics and morality; cruelty to animals can no longer be excused by being labelled as ‘traditional’ or 'cultural.'

Please read the article to learn more and use the link towards the bottom of the page to contact the Sri Lankan government mission in your home country and ask that this capture does not go ahead.

Coles, a major grocery store chain in Australia, has started phasing out pork produced from pigs confined to sow stalls. "Our customers are becoming increasingly interested in welfare issues surrounding pig farming, with the use of sow stalls their greatest concern."

Sow stalls are now banned in the EU and there is no reason why the same thing can not happen in Australia!

Support Sen. Harb's Bill to End Canada's Seal Slaughter

Support Sen. Harb's Bill to End Canada's Seal Slaughter | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

For too long the beautiful nation of Canada has been tarnished by the barbaric seal slaughter. This moment in history is our greatest chance yet to see it finally put to and end, but only if action is swift and effective!

Following a meeting with PETA some weeks back, Canadian Sen. Mac Harb has introduced a historic bill to end Canada's annual commercial slaughter of baby seals. This piece of legislation acknowledges that there are no markets for seal pelts now that Russia—which had been importing 95 percent of Canadian seal fur—has joined the U.S., the European Union, Mexico, and others in banning seal fur imports. Despite a lack of markets, the Canadian government continues to support the slaughter because both liberals and conservatives want to control the swing seats in the region where the slaughter takes place. Sen. Harb's bill calls for the government to end the slaughter and transition Canadians in sealing regions into sustainable economic programs.

Please click on the image above to follow the link and add your name to those calling for the Canadian seal slaughter to finally slip into the pages of history where it belongs!

All over the world political prisoners are taken into custody and punished for their cultural beliefs or their ethical standing. Authroities abuse their power and utilize a protester as a threat to others to not take a stand. Many people may think that they are safe from this kind of terrorism (and yes, this fits the definition of terrorism: the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes) but the Green Scare is spreading and people all over the world are now having their freedom quickly snatched away merely for trying to help make this world a better place. Or, as in Erwins case, for merely attempting to take a photograph!

Lets start 2012 off by preventing a horrible precedent being set in Taiji. If he goes down many of us well-intended citizens are at threat of following him.

This threat to Erwins freedon and right to protest and document the horrors of this world are a threat to everyone everywhere, along with our right to know the truth about the world in which we live!

Ohio Animal Tragedy Calls Attention to Loopholes in U.S. Captive Wildlife Laws | Extinction Countdown, Scientific American Blog Network

Ohio Animal Tragedy Calls Attention to Loopholes in U.S. Captive Wildlife Laws | Extinction Countdown, Scientific American Blog Network | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it
Whilst the recent slaughter of 50 exotic (aka foreign and naturally wild) animals in Ohio, US, has horrified many its important to recognize it is for this exact fate that most of these animals are acquired in the first place: to be shot dead by humans.
Ohio has become a haven for exotic animal auctions where animals (many of them endangered species) are sold to private collectors and hunting ranches. Hunters are able to obtain the sadistic gratification of murdering these creatures In a confined space without the need to travel to exotic and unique parts of the world and be distracted by the pesky beauty of the natural world to which these animals belong.
Some environmental groups say there may be as many as 10,000 privately owned tigers in the state of Ohio alone. Change.org are leading the battle to have Ohio law changed to ban the sale, ownership and harboring of wild and exotic animals in Ohio. Please click on the above photograph to read a wonderfully informative article from Scientific American regarding the issue and then follow the link below to add your name to those supporting the ban. Free Morgan Foundation

Free Morgan Foundation | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

Like many people of my generation I learned to love marine mammals after watching the movie 'Free Willy'. On my way home from the cinema I asked my father 'What is that person called?' He told me the word I wanted was 'Marine Biologist' though perhaps a better reply would have been Cetacean Freedom Fighter.

Right now there is a battle being waged in the Netherlands with the same passion, the same anxieties, the same corruption and the same hope for freedom as was exhibited in the film. Only this time its not reel-life its real life, and we get to play a part in the story!

Morgan was captured, sick and alone, in June of 2010 and taken to Harderwijk Dolfinarium where she was nursed back to health to be prepared for release. She is ready to be returned to the wild, but she also has a uterus valued at up to $100 million! SeaWorld is desperate to continue its orca shows, so much so that they are breeding mother orcas with their own sons because they do not have enough genetic variability available. Thats where Morgan comes in. She is destined to spend her life in a cement tank, performing tricks and making babies. If kept in captivity she is doomed to become a cetacean 'Handmaids Tale.'

She is healthy, strong and ready for a life in the wild where her family still awaits her, but just like Willy she cant make it there on her own. It is up to all of us to take that stand for her. To bring to life the tale of a lost, scared and lonely orca who is set free by people who are willing to fight for the freedom that has been so callously stolen from her.

Please follow the work of the Free Morgan Foundation and follow the 'steps to freedom.'

Thank you

Bill Interrupted - California Shark Fin Ban Hits Roadblock

Bill Interrupted - California Shark Fin Ban Hits Roadblock | Qui tacet consentit | Scoop.it

Despite the fact that 75% of Californians want the ban initiated, Bill AB 376 which would prohibit the sale and possession of shark fins in California has been placed in the 'suspended file.' Conservationists believe this critical bill is in danger of quietly vaporizing and that current amendment requests would both weaken the bill and make enforcement expensive and therefore unfeasible.
California is a gateway for shark fins harvested in Central America and as such banning the sale and possession for sharks fins there would provide a huge blow to the shark fin trade both within and outside of the US.

Please email Senator Brown and remind him that on February 14, 2011, the bill was introduced and passed with an overwhelming majority in the California Assembly. Tell him you are aware the opposition hired two top-paid lobbyist firms, Lang Hansen O’Malley & Miller and Sloat, Higgins, Jensen & Associates who represent major corporate clients like Walmart, Altria (Philip Morris) Accenture, and Anthem Blue Cross to run a slander campaign claiming the Bill was racists.
This isnt about race - this is about the survivial of sharks, our oceans and thus our planet and the entire human race.

Email Senator Brown today: http://govnews.ca.gov/gov39mail/mail.php

The NSW government is currently planning to reverse protection measures for the grey nurse shark, with plans to open up vital grey nurse habitat to fishing activities.

These sharks are listed as critically endangered with only 1000-1500 individuals believed left on the east coast of Australia. A recent study found that the death of 4 mature females a year will prevent recovery in this species. Hook and line fishing – a key threatening process under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act – causes 12 known mortalities each year!

Everyone from former 'Flipper' captor and trainer Ric O'Barry to Jean-Michel Cousteau is trying to educate the public as to why we should not be paying people to impose upon dolphins and small whales the type of conditions we impose upon people as a form of punishment: locking them away in solitary confinement, never again to interact with their own family or even their own species, in an enviornment so incredibly different from the wilderness to which they belong that it  inflicts pain upon their senses.

Sharks have inhabitat this earth for over 400 million years and have survived every single major extinction event this planet has yet faced. How sad to think they are not surviving us!
