Infection%20Control%20and%20Nurses.pdf

Emily Wylie's insight:

This paper brings attention to the history and development of hand hygiene and the importance of proper hand washing procedures. Aimee needs to know the possible consequences of inadequate hand washing and why it is needed in the health care environment. Such a simple task can improve the level of hygiene in a hospital ten fold but is often over looked because it takes time that nurses often do not have time to wash their hands in the correct manor.

Emily Wylie's insight:

This paper highlights the common ways needle stick injuries (NSI) occur, what can be contracted through NSI and ways in which they can be reduced including the elimination of needle over use and recapping. It is important to know about NSI because if you fall subject to a NSI and contracted a virus such as HIV or a form of hepatitis you will have the virus present in your blood for the rest of your life.

Ohio University School of Nursing Skills/IV Start

Theresa Wharton MSN, RN Assistant Professor of Nursing Ohio University Shows the skills required for an IV start and how accomplish this nursing task.
Emily Wylie's insight:

This video runs through the process of starting up an IV, within this video there are OHS issues that are addressed for both the Nurse and the Patient. I feel that this video will be helpful for Aimee who I studied in Quest Two as it highlights ways to prevent back injury and needle safety.

As the patients bed is low to the ground the Nurse raises the bed to a level that is comfortable for her to work on without having to bend or strain her back.

She also highlights the type of needle that is used to ensure that a needle with the ability to retract into the syringe as to prevent injury to the patient and to the nurse as setting up an IV can be very fiddley and in a small proximity to the needle.

stress-mngt.pdf

Emily Wylie's insight:

Nursing can be an extremely stressful job, constantly running around looking after patients and making sure doctors have all the information they need. With the added knowledge that people lives can be directly connected to your actions, Nursing can sometimes become to much to handle. I feel that it's important for Aimee to know about the ways of thinking that can have a negative impact on her wellbeing and the thinking strategies that will reduce her stress levels. This paper also gives examples of relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, ten things nurses should always do, and useful contacts if stress does become too much.

Preventing back injury is extremely important as an injured back can prevent you from working for extended periods of time and be the cause of trouble later on in life.
